The End of the Greystone Grays (Artuis Greystone)

Unread post by Vlaid »

A black, leather bound journal rests on a nightstand, worn and weather beaten by limited exposure to the storms of the sea and land alike.

Entry 1, Day 1

It's official. I'm last survivor of the Battle of the Bloody Feathers. Trainee Farns isn't confirmed yet, but the orcs don't take prisoners. And if they do....they'll wish they were dead anyhow.

So it is I took my last ducats and bought passage from the cursed place, a reminder of everything I lost, booking on with the ship going the farthest for the wealth I had left. By sheer chance, that put me on Roaringshore.

Nice enough place. Feels awful late in life to be starting everything over....but I guess I don't have much choice anymore. Long as I can make something worthy of my new life here, maybe the death of my cadre-mates will mean something. Maybe I can finally lay down my sword without regrets.....that'd surely be a worthy day if I could. But I fear that day is not today, nor any day soon to come.

For now, I'll just have to look forward to that day and keep hope that it's out there somewhere, long as I keep fighting and remember the men who fought at my side and died for a worthless old war dog like me. Heh. Hope nobody ever reads this when I'm dead, lot of it sounds like a damn crybaby elf.

Folded neatly between the front cover and the first entry is a mercenary cadre resume for use in finding working for independantly contracted mercs.

Entry 2, Day 2 3

So here I am. Balls deep in a sea of yes men and fancy noblemen. I've never been so out of my element in all my life. Thankfully, this lands the same as any other in one regard; greed. I've been able to cut a stable living from my work with the blade as a merc on the roads.

Finding folk willing to hire a mercenary for more than whatever rubbish you find during the job's been difficult, if not impossible. Without a good company cadre backing you up you're just another greedy, nameless blade. Ah well, suppose I can't blame them. If I were two years younger I doubt I'd hire me alone for much either.

More than that, finding quality comrades to take to the work with's been a challenging task in itself. I'm up to my eyeballs in flighty elves, nutter magelings and holier-than-thou Sir's. Seems I'm scrapping the barrel each day trying to find decent folk who don't go running about like their hair's on fire. Suppose I'm just getting old and set in my ways.

Upside to all that; found some minor steady work with a shady git. Pay's decent, been more in trade than real hard coin but that's fine for the little work I've had to do. I always get the feeling he's always telling me half of everything. I don't rightly mind much, less I know the easier my job is. Downside to the work; it's for a mageling. Least he's not got too big of an ego, but he's more vain than a elven princess. At least it makes poking fun at his expense mighty easy.

Oh well. Hopefully some better work will come along soon. Still waiting for Unit 13 signups to close and for boot camp to start up. Been training off and on daily for it. First time in ages I've had something to focus my sights on....gotta say, it's a welcome change. Let's just hope I don't muck it all up.
