Background:
He is an astronomer, mage, and navigator of the (not widely known to be) pirate ship -- the Black Tempest -- currently anchored offshore from Baldur's Gate. He is a true waterman and has never been more than 3 miles from the ocean in his whole life.
He prays to Umberlee out of fear and respect for the dangers of the sea as opposed to any love or fondness for the god.
Taking on with a tough corsair crew at a young age, Nicodemus is well versed with wielding a blade and wearing the armor of a naval military personel. Many an enemy have been taken quite off guard by this rough looking man in plates and bands of mail who at will conjures up the archane forces of the weave at will.
He spent much sea time on the Sea of Moving Ice. His ship is currently anchored offshore in Baldur's gate and he is on land leave for 6 months with an option to renew his navigator's contract at the end of this term. Convenient for him, the fortress of Candlekeep is in the area and he will have a chance to study lore-filled tomes of old on the ways of magic. Never having the patience for a life long book toiling of that of a wizard, perhaps a short time spent in these treasured libraries might return him to the sea a more accomplished sorcerer... like his father.
Nicodemus Tempesti (not his real last name as he took it from his ship)... was born a bastard child to a bar wench in Luskan, his father was actually an notable sorcerer of the Sword Coast. His mother cared for him with all her heart, but growing up fatherless in Luskan was a truly rough start in life. His mother always saw great potential in Nico, but he was too head strong and rebellious to go off to school to study as she wished him to. He'd rather hang around in port taverns, drinking, womanizing, gambling, and in his late teens got in with a crew of corsairs as a ship's boy.
Having street smarts and street toughness to go with, he began to prove himself as a capable and cunning fighter and began working his way up in the ranks. It is when their ship was nearly lost at sea and the crew found Nico's prayers to Umberlee as well as his natural talent for navigation, which ultimately saved them... that they made him ship's mate and navigator. (Umberlee likely didn't hear his prayers and it was probably simply his navigation skills and blind luck that actually saved them).
Nico has taken part in much pillaging at sea. Many a man died at his hands simply for having more coin than he did. On land he is out of his element and much more apt to keep a low profile. Still a scoundrel, but he leaves his criminal ways mainly to the sea's whims. Seems noone on the sword coast minds him raiding goblin, bandit, orc, hobgoblin, and kobold settlements... so until he sets sail, this is simply how he is going to have to make his coin... unless he falls in with a new gang. For enjoyment, there are more than a few reputable inns in the region.
Goals:
Conquests of riches and romance. Becoming stronger through his innate magical abilities. Returning to the sea perhaps a captain of his own pirate vessel one day. Not getting hung or thrown in jail for any notable length of time. Studying at Candlekeep.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Never met his father... doesn't know his father's -- therefore his own last name... never bothered him much, but little clues may pop up here and there. Is a worshipper of Umberlee for convenience and is not terribly faithful at all. Most of the time he just begs Umberlee not to sink his ship when the waters get rough. It is possible he is wanted in a few towns up and down the Sword Coast -- mainly in the North... at least for questioning.
