Background:
Gretchen Fearna was born not with the name she has now, but with one she knows not of. She does not know if she was orphaned, sold, or simply given away, nor was she ever told. However, she arrived in Calimshan as a babe, one of mixed Northern and Calimshani blood, her skin being of a light olive rather than her more dark counter-parts. She was sold as a contracted worker (Or slave some may say) to the Noble House of the Joriin family. This family was known for making exquisite wines, trading, and worshipping Ilmater. She began her service under Lady Akilah, the eldest daughter of the immediate family. Lady Alikah at this time was of her early years, just before her twenties, and Gretchen was around age Four. Gretchen was given her name upon "Adoption" due to a book Lady Akilah, had read, on a female warrior, a book often called Taboo by many Calimshani men. Though Akilah saw Gretchen's yellow eyes, as a sign of her fiery personality.
Gretchen served Akilah for many years. She would braid her hair often, while Akilah would teach her to read and often put her to sleep, treating her more of a daughter as she grew in age, as the Lady could not concieve children herself, whom had been married since her young teen-age years, she took Gretchen as an opportunity to fill that hole which had been missing from her life. Her husband, Lord Hamza also became very fond of the little girl, calling her Aamira(Princess).
Though Contracted workers often live hard and stressful lives, Gretchen was very fortunate to serve the persons she did, allowing her to live in luxury and often making her spoiled as a child as the Lord and Lady would often take her whilst they shopped, though they often were out to shop for the young girl. Gretchen in many aspects considers them her true parents, as her own she had never met, seen, or spoke to, nor does she has any concern or want to meet them (If they're alive).
Gretchen was provided a strong education (as most Calimshani are) and is litterate as well as able to do some basic maths and science. She was also raised from a young age to wield a dagger, though not for offensive matters, but as to defend Lady Akilah were there ever a threat on her life or her family. Though the young Gretchen was not adept at weaponry, she would still be deadly only due to whatever intruder would be un-suspecting of her. Gretchen spent her early youth (4-10) learning minor literacy and the ability to use a weapon around these ages, she quickly became an asset that the Joriin family would consider their own, regardless of contract.
At the Age of Eleven she began some discipline training, although unlike most houses which may resort to harsh labors, Gretchen was simply placed ontop of an open bucket, filled with grapes. She then stomped away endlessly, to produce juices, suitable to make wine. The young girl, now becoming a young woman was also being taught how to cook, bake, and properly clean around the house to became a invaluable asset to any Lord had he a wish to marry her. Though she did not excell at neither cooking nor cleaning, she did create wonderful treats, such as rich chocolates, cakes, and other fine deserts that were rarities amongst the more common folk. Later the chocolates she made would soon be introduced into the wine made by the family, sporting to the Sultan quite often for his personal winery. She continued her training in the combat arts as well, though she continued to not excell in the endeavor, she was considered more suitable for a future wife than asset of combat.
The girl now blossomed into a young woman, at the age of Fourteen, she had now become very adept at baking, producing wine, and even had gained a nice affection to cooking dishes for visitors, instead of in her fine bedroom with silk curtains, she was now often found in the kitchen, though she did not always work, sometimes she would try and sneak off with the boys, and swing wooden swords with them in good fun, all of them trained, though the boys excelled in their combat regime, they often batted her on the hand. Lady Akilah would often watch from her balcony, weaving silk, observing as her child slacked off, but she would rather shake a head and tsk, than raise a finger. Gretchen was spoiled and treated well, though often that could be said of the children workers of house Joriin, rarely did punishment came, and if it did, rarely would it be severe in nature. Gretchen had now been brought into a world of strangeness as she had become a woman, looking at boys in a more romantic fashion, she began to become more accustomed to dresses and lean away from her tom-boyish nature that she had been raised into. Though she was independent she started to feel uncomfortable, as such a nature was uncommon and often unwelcomed in Calimshan for women to act in such mannerisms. Though not disencouraged by her Lady and Lord, in her classes for proper ettiquete she was often lectured.
She had just turned Sixteen, and her contract was now let loose, not only was that a gift from Lord Hamza, but he also announced her into the family name, as a permenant adoption. Now the girl known as Gretchen Fearna Joriin, in full title. Though her blood was not noble, she bore the name and wore it with pride, a rarity in the Joriin house, and unheard of by most of Calimshan, it was a rare and beautiful moment. Gretchen was a servant, baking goods for the visiting Lords, was now being prepared to court them, helping her family dominate in more political houses by having connections. Gretchen however, in many aspects lacked the qualities many Calimshani men looked for. Her skin was pale, she rarely had a submissive attitude willingly, and she often spoke her mind, very often in fact. Her eyes by this time had also began to have spots of blur, and she was unable to read without proper eye-wear, resulting in some Lords seeing her as a "risk" to have children with, due to her bad eye-sight. She often was brought to dances and parties by Lady Alikah, though she spoke to young Lords, rarely did any wish to court her, and the ones that did, she cared little for their appearance and, or attitudes. She was a woman of luxury, and she wanted nothing more than the best she could have, this attitude would continue nor would it stop.
Time would pass quickly, and in numerous years for the girl, she would remain un-married though she would court many of the finest young men, all of which she quickly batted away, becoming bored after seeing them for long periods of time. No one could hold her taste, nor her bitter attitudes when she displayed them. Lord Hamza often lectured her, as she often turned down men whom would be extremely valuable politically to the family, though she would simply bat a lash, and give big yellow puppy eyes to the Lord. He would only become overwhelmed by his daughter, and lose track of his lecture, continueing on with his business.
Gretchen remained in Calimshan for many years in the House, until her Uncle Daedrin Joriin went missing, he was the youngest brother to lady Alikah, a Cleric of Ilmater, though often he was looked down upon for living an adventurers life, and also being rather promiscuous, he needed to be found. Lady Fearna Joriin was then readied and asked to take a trade ship to Baldur's Gate, where she would not only sell family wears with permission from the Sultan, but also conduct explorations in hope of finding her Uncle, whose ship never arrived to his destination. No Manifests of her Uncles arrival were documented, nor any wreckages related to the Joriin family along the coast.
Though Gretchen fears he is dead, she has no choice but to stay in what she calls "Barbaric lands" until she has found either her uncle, or where he met his demise. She now journeys with daggers under her silk robes, which she had steel paldrones attached to, along with some minimal under-armor, though she always looks presentable as a lady, and noble figure.
Goals: Currently searching for what happened to her (House)Uncle, Daedrin Joriin. Selling wines and other fine luxuries for her house to produce personal and family profit.
