Flyers can be seen posted about Baldur's Gate and the surrounding villages and establishment. They read:

It is the pleasure of King Dovkin Battlehammer to announce a gladiator style tournament to be held on the seventeenth day of the eigth month! It will be located at the Baldur's Gate Arena and all are welcomed to compete with blade and spell, might and magic. Come test yourselves against the finest of the Sword Coast. Prize money will be awarded to victors of each class of combatants.

Where: Arena North of Baldur's Gate
Who: Participation is open to all
Rules: No holds barred. All gear, items, useables, abilities are permitted. No spells
Wild Card Option: If both contestants agree, optional wild card gear will be provided. This will be a selection of mundane (non-magical) gear which is distributed based on the roll of a dice. Both contestants must agree if this system is to be used. If the wild card option is used, then all other gear is banned, but useables are still allowed. NOTE: This option is for fun and RP purposes. It is not intended to provide an advantage to either contestant.
Categories: Contestants will be grouped Level 1-10, 11-20, 21-30.
Prize Money:
1-10: 5,000
11-20: 10,000
21-30: 20,000

This decision is not intended to exclude, but to simplify. This is only the second event I've ever run and we are trying not to burden the DMs by doing it on our own. Perhaps in the future a melee/caster tournament could be considered, but I am not prepared to run such an event since balancing it will bee exceedingly difficult.

What about potions, or items that cast spells? Each fighter should have to rest just before the battle, removing some hidden spells perhaps?

Hmm... originally I was going to allow all items and potions ect... but that was before I took out magic users....


It is a good idea to have people rest to remove all enchantments beforehand. I'll think about that one and most likely implement it.

Based on other imput I have received, I have decided to ban potions and items too.

((Well, level splits are not exactly fair; average Level 10 can take on a hundred of lvl 1 I'd say.
Make it just as bab scales
6 - 10
11 - 15
16 - 21
21 - 25
26 - 30

Fights with lvl one tend to end after one hit *shrug*

That is a good idea, and the more classes of entries I have, the more fair it will become. The problem is a financial one. I really don't have the coin to provide 5 prizes. I'm already getting help in the 3 prizes right now.

Once I have a ridiculously wealthy epic toon, then I will be able to make more entry categories.

It's a good idea, and I considered it. Since I'm probably going to be running this one on my own and it's the first one I'm doing solo, I'm aiming for max simplicity. In the future I will add more complexity.

///There was a hitch with the brawl. The DM that was going to help had internet problems and couldn't attend which slowed things down. This event is DM independent and the only necessary person is me (aside from the prize financiers), so as soon as I am there and enough contestants are there, we can start.

It probably wont be right at 1900, but I hope it will be shortly thereafter. 1900 is the soonest I can get on the computer, so I can't schedule it any earlier.

Right. Enchanted items such as magic weapons or rings or magic armor are fine. Now gauntlets that allow you to cast Issac missile storm could not be used to cast the spell, but they could be worn for their other properties.
