On souls and raising the dead.

Unread post by Deathgrowl »

On page 172 of the Players Handbook 3.5, this is written:

"Revivification against One's Will: A soul cannot be returned to life if it does not wish to be. A soul knows the name, alignment, and patron deity (if any) of the character attempting to revive it and may refuse to return on that basis. For example if Alhandra the paladin is slain and a high priest of Nerull (god of death) grabs her body, Alhandra probably does not wish to be raised from the dead by him. Any attempts he makes to revive her automatically fail. If the evil cleric wants to revive Alhandra to interrogate her, he needs to find some way to trick her soul, such as duping a good cleric into raising her and then capturing her once she's alive again."

I'm basically wondering what the staff's take on this is. What would happen in such a situation on this server?

It is pretty much the same, although some players prefer to play death as being unconscious not dead.

The only way to truly apply this is when a player or players decide that a character (their own) is permanently killed and out of play until someone finds the body and the person who is attempting a revival of the slain PC meets all the conditions that PC will have as too who will raise them from the dead.

So in essence, true resurrection like this can only be done through RP means, everything else is like being near death or unconscious with the raise dead or ressurection being a way to revive them from the brink of the death not death itself. Even if you are in the fugue, some play that the fugue is only a pergatory that your soul is temporarily housed until a deity or other supernatural creature comes to collect/claim/distribute your soul in the afterlife... you are not truly dead until that happens. When fugued, your body maybe revived and your soul returned by such a spell sort of like being resusitated in modern day terms.

However, if the player deems that the soul has passed on from the fugue and has been in resting then that leads to a situation where only RP can bring the character back which is between the dead character and the those that have chosen to undertake the character's resurrection.

For example, I am Larry the wizard.... I get killed by facing an unknown evil in a DM event. As a player, I choose to stay dead and play permadeath rules since there is no one around to revive me from dying alone in that dungeon with the unknown evil.

However, Miranda my love interest and companion notices that I do not return to her at the time Larry stated he would. She gathers her and larry's companions to track larry's whereabouts and learn of his demise. My character Larry the wizard lays dead and unplayable until Miranda and her companions find me in that dungeon and slay the unknown evil within.

I make a condition that Larry can only be raised by a good aligned cleric of Mystra or other clerics of goodly gods, however there is a chance to fail if they are not of Mystra. That is my RP condition to bring Larry the Wizard back into play.

Halevian, a devout of mystra and apprentice to the archmage Lordiric happens to be a companion in Miranda's party. She then comes to know that Larry is also a devout of Mystra and therefore would most likely be willing to return if another of "like-faith" greets him and offers a chance for Larry to leave the after-life. Larry's spirit seeing her and her intentions and her faith, trusts Halevian and allows her to return his soul willingly to his remains.

Larry is risen.

that is the difference between being resusitated with IG spell mechanics and truly resurrected through RP.
