Shadows... Rituals... Hounds... oh my!

Odd chanting is heard upon the mist crossing the river Chionthar. Rumors of dark rituals abound in the lands surrounding Baldur's Gate. A few brave adventurers delve deeper into the shadows.

The Exorcist

A merchant seeks answers... One touched, confirmation... Another to serve the guardian to who's house they venture... Divinities quarrels.... with impatience one seeks to reap with fell swipe at their masters bidding... All keep their secrets... until they are divulged... Light seeks to be cast upon that which is hidden... deep... The guardian protects... as is his nature...

Hopeless Romantic

The body of a merchant noble washes up at the Docks in the Baldur's Gate Harbor. The Flaming Fist publicly report that it was an accident. However, for the coming days Fist are seen harassing any suspected Teiflings in the area, and anyone with pronounced bumps on their heads, cleft foots, or excessively dark or reddish complexions.
The nobles of Baldur's Gate are abuzz about the recent death of a noble fished out of the Docks of Baldur's Gate. Rumors abound that a teifling snuck into his offices at the merchant league the day of his murder, warning him that his life was in danger.

The Fist had apprehended this teifling, questioned him, but released him before the body was found. While publicly pronouncing the death an accident - drinking on the docks at night and falling into the water to drown in a stupor - Fist soldiers spend the next several days 'shaking-down' tieflings and cripples throughout the city.
One of the Fist at the scene finds a tooth laying in a small red puddle on the docks. He picks it up and shrugs, tossing it off the docks into the water below.

The Fate of Triel: Reinforcements

Various forces mobilize in defense of Triel. Members of the Order of the Silver Rose who travel with the mobile triage station find a brief respite for the night at the ruins of an old tower just west of Boresky Bridge. They are fell upon by assassins in the night. As they recover, and seek to cross the bridge, they find it fortified, not by orcs, but by... humans.

The pass is blocked by bandits and well disciplined phalanx troops in black armor. The Elves of Endarasha join them, aid them in their recovery from the assassin assault, which took the lives of a brave knight who protected the surprised allies of the OSR. They decide not to turn back, and push through the blockade. It is a grueling battle as the occupiers are skilled, well armed, and dug in. While they break the blockade, it costs them dearly, and they are required to retreat to tend their injuries and recover from their losses.

The position is refortified in the coming days, by more of the same bandits and black armored phalanx.

Further south, a large Orc scouting troop is assaulted by the defenders.

Quietly and in the night, the majority of the villagers of Triel are evacuated in small groups by visitors arriving unseen and unannounced. Many of them leave straw in beds and other such feints so that the evacuated citizens are largely unnoticed by those preparing for warfare. They travel through the woods and country side to Scornubel and Eldurel, where they are housed as refugees in tent camps and ghettos.

The Fate of Triel: Part 13 Blackorc Occupation

For more than a day the orcs are camped at the edge of Triel. They feast and prepare for war, hold spars and chant in their preparation. The defenders remain within the town, awaiting their assault, the air thick with tension.

The mercenary reinforcements from Triel remain within the palisade, where they took refuge as a defensive force claiming they will aid the defenders, who take the vanguard.

The orcs fall upon the town, the first wave. The defenders meet them on the open field, and it is beaten back. Catapult fire is flung through the air, bombarding the defenders, who hold their ground. The next wave comes, and the next. The lines start to break. War trolls appear on the horizon.

As the fever outside the palisade walls rises to a pitch, as the waves of orcs crash into the defenders lines... a throat is slit, another, and another... the few flaming fist defenders within the walls fall quietly, unceremoniously.
* The two archers stood together until the end, a hail of arrows launched from their bows. Suddenly, there are attackers behind them. Mercenaries paid to aid the defense turn on their former allies. Swords slash. Metal clangs. Wood shatters. One recalls something her mother told her many winters past, "Trust is the biggest liability of all." Pain. Falling. Nothing…

Hours after the battle, the vile victors pull two females, a barbarian human and moon elf, from the wreckage that was once the stairs into the hilltop fort of Triel. They were strangely clinging together in their apparent deaths. The brutes of the Dark Horde failed to notice both are barely alive, each flirting with her last breath, then not.

The river was stained red with the blood of the fallen. The two women were unceremoniously tossed into the cold water along with other former citizens and defenders of Triel. The barbarian's fur-lined leathers naturally protect her from the wet and cold of the distant north and now protect her from the river's cold waters. She easily floats to the surface. Her partner however is weighed down by her metal armor. After a few moments in the water, she struggles to breathe before the river finishes what the Horde started. Hands clasp. Air. Life.
As the chaos of war descends, bodies from both sides begin to litter the ground, The palisade lost to the treacherous mercenaries from Soubar the defenders call for retreat. They fallback to the northern bridge and hold their, skirmishing with the forces that follow.

The Soubarian mercenaries cheer from within the palisade walls... but their victory is short lived, for the mad dogs, lose from their bindings do not relent. The Mercenaries look on in horror as the Orcs rush the palisade. They quickly overwhelm the mercenaries, no longer bolstered by the defenders, and slaughter them to the last man. The defenders at the bridge hear the cries and choas. The chieftan rises up the steps of the palisade, spreads his arms and lets out a bellowing warcry in victory. It is echoed by his hoard and heard for several miles. Triel has fallen.

Atlas wrote: Many of the Elves and such did survive this however having moved over away from the main hill-fort and over to the stone bridge and away from these super powered brigands.
Elven Perspective:

Orcs begin swarm. Elves remain in reserve and launch volleys of arrows. Then catapult bombardment. Elves move into double back west around the fort and begin flanking maneuver. The first elven scout moves out and begins opening a volley on Orcs to draw their attention, hoping to lead them into an elven ambush.

Scout sees Soubar Merc Crossbowmen in pathway to fort, runs back to elven archer line formed up to ambush. "Zhentarim have entered the fort!!", then all the elves come rushing around. "Hold your position!", lol that didn't work :P

Everyone runs into the fray,a quarter of them are cut down in the lag and chaos. Suddenly three freaking war trolls start stomping in. "Fall back", this time all the survivors listened, I don't think they even waited. They moved to the bridge desperately rushing to form up. Many of them began casting grease, web, fire wall and evards black tentacles.

The three war trolls brambled toward them and my character straifed one of them with arrows, getting it to follow him back to the village. Dipped out into hips to leave it stranded there snuck through the carnage and back to the bridge where the defenders were battling desperately with great effect to slow the behemoths with area spells but it wouldn't stop their advance.

I came up from behind and held ones attention long enough while the other continued after the force of mostly Dharashans. To her credit, Reyle Windchaser took the same tactic, sneaking behind the other to frustrate it's advance. The combined spellpower of Deacon and another mage took it down.

I let the last one go (my character didn't have any damaging effect) and it started for the others. Reyle, brave as she was, crept too close on sneak attacking. Now, Mendel began a series of brave runs to cut into, expose the beast, lower it's AC and move out of the way. Everyone began a dance around it, firing spell, slashing, firing volleys and slowly dwindling it down.

Mendel got to close and went down but the 2nd beast was mortally wounded and a giant blast of acid took it down by Deacon. We had just enough time to raise Mendel when the third one slowly crept back onto the screen. That is when the funniest part of the whole day happened! Deacon, being the bravest little bastard of all time, runs up to it and casts a spell to slow it. The beast nails Deacon for like 90 HP and he scurried off yelling, "OWWIE!!!". Who the he'll has time to type that out and not die :P

We began our dance again, darting in to expose, fire off many shot, cast spells and each taking a turn to frustrate it's path. The last one went down to Mendel, Lais, Shyn, Deacon and many others in a great combined effort. It truly was a great thing to see and we even rejoiced when it fell. But then we heard and saw the masses of Orcs and moved to form a line on the north bridge.

The rest will be covered in an IC post but I have to say, for killing 3 overpowered killing machines, I think that was awesome and a testament to tactics ruling the day. To bad the rest of it sucked for us :P

It's the little things, like Deacon yelling OWWIE when probably getting punted over a barn that You have to laugh about

SWEET SWEET BREA
Another old soothsayer crossed the trade road south en route to Nashkel spouting prophetic doomsayings of a coming dread god. Several adventurers were seen following/escorting the man to Nashkel.

They listend to him spout doomsayed musings in the bitter cold which taunted the final throughs of winter. A scream was heard from beyond the southern gate; in the Giant fields; a womans voice. The adventurers quickly followed.

After scouring the field in pursuit of the damsel in distress, the party comes upon three hill giants huddled over a terrified woman, fawning over her as she screams for help. After they dispatch the giants, they learn that she had come to the fields with another man, who now lay bludgeoned and half eaten nearby. Brea faints, and Thedran Rock carries her into town.

They are seen walking through town and eventually make their way to the tavern. After the warmth returns to her face, Brea insists the adventurers must be rewarded for their efforts, she orders a feast for the large party. Food is presented, music fills the room, wine flows liberally. It isn't long until the entire tavern is up in dance and song. Brea drinks too much, and is seen dancing a sultry dance with many a patron that night.

At some point, one of the adventurers is reported to have initiated a brawl with one of the off duty guards enjoying himself at the tavern. It is unknown who threw the first punch... but before long, a rather large half orc was seen pounding the guards face with his ham fists, while two other guards were on his back pounding him mercilessly to no apparent effect.

Patrons report that at one point weapons were drawn, and the matter turned ugly. Many left the scene at this point. All that is known is that one of the Amnian guards was later discovered within, pinned to the wooden floor, his own spear thrust through his heart.

Towns folk report quite the series of events occurring outside the tavern that night. Apparently, several adventurers resisted arrest and had battled through a phalanx of Amnian spearmen to escape the town.

The town guard of Nashkel is searching for individuals matching the description of Thedran Rock, Valiant Blinncraft, and Alsarias Lythar. Seeking to arrest them on the charges of Murder of a town guard, resisting arrest, and assault of a town guard.

Radiant Heart Chaplain Juez Calvo is able to respond quickly to the injured spearmen after the escape, he is able to stabilize all of them. However, despite his best efforts, he is unable to save the unfortunate man inside pinned to the tavern floor.
