Prayers to the Cave Mother

Oh great Cave Mother!

I am lost in this world of flaming skies. My skin beads and my eyes burn. The comfort of your womb has been taken from me.

Nakar the Barbed Spear has been slain. They came unknown. They were silent. They were ruthless. The clan has no leader. I have no mate.

I ran. I ran for my life. I could not save those left behind. The black elves were too many. Too deadly. I ran. I fled.

They chased me down. Days I ran. They were tireless. I lost hope. Faint smells drew me on. The fear ahead was less than my chase. I was blinded as the passage opened. I looked upon a fire so bright. I stumbled into the green. They followed me not. Their eyes burned more than mine. But oh how it hurt me too.

I am lost. I find shelter in your cave. Your embrace. The moon spies through the hollow in the rock.

Oh great Cave Mother, grant me vengence

Oh great Cave Mother!

Your embrace brought me comfort.

I felt warmth in your touch. I felt strength in your will. A mighty foe you sent to test my resolve. I wear now its skin. I am hidden from this world. A bear in a cave

The moon shines forth once more

Oh great Cave Mother, grant me strength

Oh great Cave Mother!

Death seeks me at every turn.

This world is strange and unknown. Many are the feet that walk the open passages beneath the burning eye, and many are their tricks and deceits.

Crossbows bar my path because I keep silent as one of the pale skins passed me by. The bolt left in my shoulder I keep now pinning my bear cloak, a reminder of the true nature of this world of endless space.

How I long for Nakar to return and to smite his fury on this wretched world.

I have found a place beyond the water. It treats me less cruel. But death waits everywhere. Magic tears open the sky in a crashing thunder and a sphere of light appears on the docks. Five of the pale skins move toward it and are consumed.

I must regain my strength. I must keep of my wits. I wish for a clan once more.

The moon hangs low tonight, but I feel it still

Oh great Cave Mother, grant me stealth

Oh Great Cave Mother!

Too long has it been since I watched the moon from the comfort of your cavernous womb. Time has passed and I age more, but I feel younger than I once did. My strength returns and with it my resolve.

I have once more spoken to Uruk! Two clans. One weak, their warriors undeserving of respect. I gouged their eyes and broke their bones, cast them down in their own caves and prayed to you at their idol of Gruumsh. The other clan reminded me deeper of what I have lost. I met a pair only but they spoke of others. Worshipping the storm god was the leader, a talisman of orc, strong and fearless, and the young gru, she was fierce and proud. I looked at what I had once been all those years ago. I should have followed them, but we fell ways in the dry south desert. They must have moved on, I have not seen them since.

My feet walk long hours, from the desert to the snow, from the seas to the mountains, but not yet have I stepped back into the lightlessness. Your caves, if I find one, gives me comfort enough, for now. I escaped the tracking of pale ones, into a wood to the east, it is quiet. Deer and rabbit run freely, until my claws catch them. They make for good meals, a change to fish, I may make a home here, temporary, fatten up on rabbit as winter approaches.

The moon shines full in my eyes tonight.

Oh great Cave Mother, grant me hope

I never make mistakes…I thought I did once; but I was wrong.
