Time line questions: LOre : Auril

Unread post by Azmodeth »

on WotC I can find this:
Aurilandür and Auril are one and the same. Long before humans started venerating the Frostmaiden, she was known as the Frost Sprite Queen, a (mostly) benevolent winter fey with a seat on the Court of Stars. She was latter corrupted by a malign artifact, warred with her sister the Summer Queen, and was banished from the Feywild. Thereafter her name was stricken and she was referred to only as the Queen of Air and Darkness. At this time she garnered a human following and joined Talos-who-was-Gruumsh as one of the Gods of Fury. With the aid of Silvanus, the dark artifact’s hold over Auril was shattered during the Stormstar Requiem, and the Aurilandür of old has once again begun to peak through Auril’s icy, malevolent veneer
when does this happen, year wise, or in relation to us, and when did it start , i.e when did the artifact take hold of Auril when her sister was away, the black ten facetted gem?

What Azmodeth has been based on, was finding a records of Auril growing up, snooping around the High temple of ice as a child. Not being fit as an Aurilite, they refused to keep her and gave her off to some wizard to use to fill in some debts.

Talos-who-was-Gruumsh
Sounds like 4th edition... which is way ahead of our timeline.

The Stormstar Requiem occurs during the Spellplague (1385 DR), so it is, in fact, 4th Edition material.

This does not happen for several decades, and will probably never be reached here on BG:TSCC.

Thought Grummsh was Talos for a long time though, but just not known.

so we know spellplague was 1385 then.

okay, what year was Aurilandeur imprisoned/attacked, then ?

The server uses 2nd edition lore mostly, which means Talos and Gruumsh are two different deities with similar portfolios.

There is no exact date given to the date Auril was corrupted but its suggested a extremely long time ago, before any human started to worship her. Auril was already corrupted and evil when Lolth tried to take over Arvandor, as she was one of the gods that helped attack with Malor. She was beaten by Aerdrie Faenya the elven deity of wind at the time.

Lolth fell before even the crown wars, so that make Auril already the evil god of Air and darkness before -30,000 DR, when Lolth was banished from Arvandor.

is this lore entirely messed up in newer versions of dnd ?

They've largely given the impression that Auril was captured and controlled by the gem for decades roughly, only, and started to get human followers recently, having not even been the Diety of Wind, and Darkness earlier.

is there some site or reference that lists changes in lore, or does the newer editions simply ONLY change what happened next..

if I remember correctly, elemental goddess at one point, not long ago, like 1st or 2nd or something, were not really goddess and then in later editions, they're greater goddesses.. is this something that happens after/during ToT or where/what exactly.

Ive been RPing since the beginning that I (Azmodeth) believed differently in her Diety, that she simply chooses not to venerate Evil per se, but instead everything else. Also, its not so much as I choose to believe Auril, its like she is family, I was literally adopted by the clergy as of the age of 1ish-2ish. And my backstory to how I became a frostmage, ha ssometing to do with me learning a trick with illusion, that borders on my suggesting I found a secret in a cut off abandoned area of the temple working with my mentor at the time.

what is my concern, is, am I RPing against lore, like is believeing I have know a different Auril, something that is Impossible, never mind unlikely. Could things have been written, and stored away, about the past, or prophecy about the future, like maybe Aulando's prophecies or such things. Maybe even from an Author that was never considered legit or accurate, and thus not famous like Aulando.

Am not sure what gave the impression she was only corrupted by the gem for just Decades. However most of the fey stuff does not come about till 4e, and lore wise she does not act any nicer till after the spell plauge.

Auril has a very loose church as it is, its mostly individuals going around helping people freeze to death, to help spread worship by fear. Humanity only worshiped Auril after she was corrupted and would not know anything about her fey nature. As well as considering that evil Auril can be placed as far back as -30000 DR, even if any of that knowledge was leaked it be hard pressed to stand the test of time. Some fey and elven lore keepers may still hold the knowledge, but even there own impressive history keeping be not full.

Auril's Dogma for as long as humans have ever know her has been.
Cover all the lands with ice. Quench fire wherever it is found. Let in the winds and the cold; cut down windbreaks and chop holes in walls and roofs that my breath may come in. Work in darkness to hide the cursed sun so that the chill I bring may slay. Take the life of an arctic creature only in great need, but slay others at will. Make all Faerun fear me

well, that confirms a fear of my characters backstory then.

it means, thusly im less of a follower of Auril then I wanted to be, and more over just a believer, because of part of her Dogma and my history growing up int he church, I think I can roll with it, but I would have to ask a player or two to agree I screwed up in a place or two, and maybe re-do the rp ..

but otherwise Im good, but what I have understood changes.

Thank you so much for the information, a few people been over the while, asking more about Auril and such too, so this all helps out.

As others have written, on our server, Auril is Auril.

However, Auril is a bit like Umberlee in most parts of Faerûn, she is venerated by many common people and people who would not consider themselves 'evil' - though mainly out of fer of the consequences for neglecting her influence.

There is even a yearly festival in Waterdeep taking place every winter - Auril's Blesstide.

Though while her dogma is indeed to cover the lands in ice, and to make all of Faerûn fear her, her method can at times be more subtle than that of for instance Talos the Destroyer, who is much more blunt in his approaches to world domination.

Going for a more 'lenient' approach can be considered within the confinements of the faith, and it is indeed recommended here on the server, where obvious and stupid evil (I'm looking at you, Banites of old days) lasts very short time.
However, there are still limits as to how much this can be stretched. Any clergy - or those affiliated with the clergy - would know very well that Auril is both unforgiving, harsh and a cruel mistress. And those who portray her as benevolent or forgiving would indeed be accused of heresy by the church.

I like to think of Auril as an evil ice bitch, but as the lore on Aurilandür says, sometimes her fey aspect shines through the veneer, and much of Auril's domain can be associated with beauty as well. For instance the yearly ice skating festival at every midwinter.
Much of the knowledge of the conversion from Aurilandür to Auril would indeed be considered immensely apocryphal by anyone, even the church, considering that it took place aeons ago. However, I like to think that the church knows that Auril at least has some connection to the Fey world. After all, many of her worshipers are fey.

And amusingly enough, in 4th ed. once it is discovered that Aerdrie Faenya is Akadi in disguise, Auril beats Akadi's ass and steals much of her portfolio, including the worship of all Avariel elves, who turn from Aerdrie-as-Akadi to Auril.
