Unwilling Unlife - The Book of Badger

Unread post by Ichabod »

I've decided to keep a record of my memories and experiences, in case they go missing again...Hopefully these reflections will help me figure out what happened. It has been several weeks since I woke up on the slab. I remember clearly the little imp that did this to me. Hin, or maybe a gnome...it was hard to tell, tied down to a granite table. I have no idea how long I was out for, but I played dead for a few hours after I woke. He was muttering something about 'life eternal,' 'the subject,' some nonsense about something called 'negative energy.' Didn't make much sense. Good thing he doesn't know how to tie knots. He didn't even put up a fight, just ran when I busted free. I need to find a priest to figure out what he did to me...I couldn't chase him, my joints are so achey. There also appears to be a significant amount of bruising on my back and bum, and I'm covered in stitching and metal plates. I tried removing some, but they appear to be load-bearing.

I was fortunate to find those lads in the woods a couple days later, although they didn't stick around long enough to chat. They took one look at me, and bolted. I can't say I wouldn't have done the same, looking like I do. They had some fine swag piled up in their cave, obviously not theirs. Lucky for me, they had a mostly-empty book and some ink in a satchel. I'll have to track down those boys - it seemed like they recognized me. I have no notion of where I am right now, so I'll find a road and walk until I find people, and hopefully some answers.

I can't seem to remember any information about myself. The only telling mark on my body appears to be a tattoo of a badger on my left forearm, so I've decided to use that as a name until I figure out where that shorty is holding my memories.

Entry 2...not sure what day it is.

I've begun to notice more things about my body...probably the result of that accursed wizard's meddling. Any wounds, scrapes, and bruises I have received since I awoke are healing normally, but the cuts the necromancer made into my flesh are not. It looks like I am stuck with these plates and sutures until I can work out what he did to me, and find someone to undo it.

I've also noticed some of the plates holding me together appear to be magical. I met a fellow the other day, mucking about underground looking for a wizard rumored to live in the area. This fellow spoke in a tongue I didn't understand at first. The plate covering my left ear began to hum as he spoke, though, and the words resolved themselves into something understandable. Useful, that. I might leave that one on. While in the same cavern, I was beset by some rude flying demons. They were talking nonsense, something about 'drowning in a fountain of eternal life,' but one of them actually cast a spell at me. Little darts flew out of his fingers. They went through my armor, but soaked into the bolted plate on my chest like water into a mop. I was able to cut the demons down with little effort.

I eventually found and spoke with the wizard, who had locked himself in his own dungeon. He seemed batty. Was talking about some experiments of his, and something about a dragon guarding his workshop. I asked him about my condition. He seemed very interested, but ignorant. He tried to pursuade me to stay so he could 'study me.' If he hadn't been locked in a cell, I'd have made him regret his comment - it seemed like something the hooded necromancer would say.

I'll head north. It looks like there might be a city nearby. I had to avoid the inn I passed a couple days ago...I saw some holier-than-though-looking folks nearby, and given my altered state, I though it wiser to avoid them. Cities, though, are good for anonymity, and often filled with interesting people to question.
