When I first left the farm for Baldur's Gate, I was appalled by the sheer ignorance of the people along the road. Monsters abound, but no-one does anything! The guards, the mercs, the paladins litter the countryside, but so does the beasts threatening the farms and the commoners. I asked a guard once why they simply wont just burn down the goblin infested forest, and he just looked at me flabbergasted, as if I was a madman. I know, burning down the forest may be a bit extreme, but my point was still valid.

However, once I arrived in Baldur's Gate, I found that the problem is bureaucracy. What I found was this: The guards are not paid to vanquish threats, only defend against them. I would have thought pre-emptive countermeasures would constitute as defending, but alas, that is nay the case. As this dawned on me, I was distraught; how could the beasts ever be erradicated if I was the only one giving a rats buttocks?

It would seem I was wrong. Not about the guards, and mercs and nobles, mind you, but I wasn't alone. After just a few days in Baldur's Gate, I met some fellow adventurers who asked me to accompany them into the graveyard to erradicate a necromancer and her undead minions. Until then, the guards had done nothing but contain the evildoers to the cemetary. We quickly disposed of the bonies and their masters. To my great joy, our group soon heard of kobolds infesting some ruins just outside the gates of the city. We cleared out the ruins, and in the mean time ran into more lone warriors and wizards who also had decided to take up the blade against these beasts! I finally found myself surrounded by other men and women of action, who also wanted to make the realms safe from the beasts of the forces of corruption and evil.

Mind you, when I asked them why we don't simply torch the ruins, they gave me the same look as the guard I mentioned earlier...

Note to self:
Buy oil and a torch...
