blind sight and rping

Unread post by 7threalm »

Blindsight never allows a creature to distinguish color or visual contrast. A creature cannot read with blindsight.

I found this little tidbit about blindsight, what is the dm ruling on this say

Wizard A: a forgotten tomb of knowledge, i can so read this

Fighter A: you have blindsight on, you cannot determine what it says cause your vision is all iffy

is this valid rp ?

The target can see invisible creatures (as the see invisibility spell) and suffers no penalties for fighting or acting in total darkness.
This is the nwn2 version of the spell.

Considering it states the color thing nowhere in nwn2, it shouldn't be considered the same as in P&P.

If you want to post up a suggestion in the right board about changing its ingame description though, I would even support the idea.

Hidden: show
Using nonvisual senses, such as sensitivity to vibrations, keen smell, acute hearing, or echolocation, a creature with blindsight maneuvers and fights as well as a sighted creature. Invisibility, darkness, and most kinds of concealment are irrelevant, though the creature must have line of effect to a creature or object to discern that creature or object. The ability’s range is specified in the creature’s descriptive text. The creature usually does not need to make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures within range of its blindsight ability. Unless noted otherwise, blindsight is continuous, and the creature need do nothing to use it. Some forms of blindsight, however, must be triggered as a free action. If so, this is noted in the creature’s description. If a creature must trigger its blindsight ability, the creature gains the benefits of blindsight only during its turn.

Deafening attacks thwart blindsight if it relies on hearing.

This spell grants the Blindsight feat.
The target creature gains sensitivity to vibrations, so that it maneuvers and fights as well as a sighted creature.
The target creature's senses extend to a 30-foot radius, and the creature need not make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures within this range.
Invisibility and darkness are irrelevant, though the creature can't discern ethereal beings.

Here's how I understand the spell Blindsight. Your character would not be able to read the text in complete darkness, 'just' because they have Blindsight, no.

However, Blindsight does not remove a wizards normal sensory capacity, they just add extra nonvisual senses, nowhere does it say you lose sight. So if there were any source of light he would be able to read it normally. In addition to this however, they have all the advantages of Blindsight, so they'd be able to manoeuvre around in complete darkness without stumbling or fumbling around.

I hope that helped answer your question :)

blindsight

Some creatures have blindsight, the extraordinary ability to use a nonvisual sense (or a combination of such senses) to operate effectively without vision. Such sense may include sensitivity to vibrations, acute scent, keen hearing, or echolocation. This ability makes invisibility and concealment (even magical darkness) irrelevant to the creature (though it still can't see ethereal creatures and the creature must have line of effect to a creature or object to discern that creature or object). The creature usually does not need to make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures within range of its blindsight ability. This ability operates out to a range specified in the creature description.

Deafening attacks thwart blindsight if it relies on hearing (as a bat's echolocation ability does).
