Open Lock

Unread post by clean_slate »

How much should I take? I took one point (playing a STR based character, so DEX bonus is +3 from 16 DEX) but I see some of the chests in Cloakwood have DCs in 25-30 range. Should I invest more, or keep it at 1? What about higher level areas, are the DCs higher? In that case I will be keeping it at 1.

Thanks.

main question.. do you have rogue levels?

if not you cant open anything above 20DC so no dont ivest more
if you have rogue levels it all depends on you
i rarely give a rogue more then 1 open lock skill (you have thieves tools you know)

For Open Lock you should either just put one point in it or go all out.

You won't need 40+ Open Lock most of the time, but there are certain places, like the Netherese ruins which have very high DC locked doors which can get you faster through the mace, I believe.

You are thinking of DC 20+ traps are Classes with Trap Finding Feat only, not locks - there is no restriction on locks and everyone also gets to "Roll 20" out of combat as well.

If you really want to open higher level chests, you can get by with 1 OL and swapping out your equipment for OL gear. It is fairly easy to get 40-45 in the skill this way. Just a slight hassle with all the swapping of equipment not to mention ~inventory space~ and ~weight~.

Does it matter how many rogue levels you have or will any qualify you for handling the high DC trap? (depending on your skill of course)

For traps, you need the rogue "Trap Finding" feat.

Thanks to server rules, it's guaranteed that you get it. Off the top of my head, I think it's level 2 but may be a base feat. It's within the first 3 levels, none the less.
