Weapons for a Mage?

Unread post by AlfarinIcebreaker »

So I finally rolled a Wizard (pure caster, not a gish) and I was wondering what should I use in my weapon slot? I'm at high teen levels and using Staff of Magic Missiles (2 per use) which helps my summon a little against current crop of enemies, but I imagine it will become obsolete at epic level.

Should I get Wizard's focusing staff? That way I will get some extra spells per day and Intelligence bonus, or should I go with something else?

There's staves with unlimited uses/day now for a chunk of change and a variety of spells.

No weapon if you can. There is a bug, that if the mob you are attacking has deflection, your ranged attack spells, miss.

Else any weapon that gives you AC ( mainly deflection), saves etc will be useful since you can save an item slot. In turn, on the item slot you saved you can use an item with bonus spells, hp etc.

For example on my caster i am using 2 daggers. One with +4deflection and another with the TWD feat.

No they are not. They only drop as items from the random item generator. You can make an auction post. Someone might have one.

for me the best pick is the +4 deflection AC staff from Soubar...
wizards dont have that amount of deflection AC from spells, and you save a spot from slots that can grant you spell uses and dont require you to unequip the weapon in several areas

its a pain belive me...

I checked it out, but it is only usable by Monk and it is worth 90000 or so. How much UMD do I need to use this anyways?

But your Charisma is counted in the equation. Meaning 14 charisma lets you use them with just 11 UMD.

As for the money, try to hire a merchant. A character with very high appraise could easily shave off at least 10K.

Sorry for going off topic, but is there any reason to go beyond 13 UMD then?

For most uses? No. However, if you want to be able to cast all scrolls without risk of failure, you should put more points into UMD as you need 25 + [Spell Level] to cast without failure, which means 34 UMD for 9th level scrolls.
