A man with tattoos on his face, wearing simple, brown clothes and a feathered cap, approaches the Istari Tower in the middle of the day. Looking very nervous, he stands next to the door and looks around. He pulls a key out of his pocket and quickly slips in through the front entrance. Once inside, the sound of the door locking from the inside is heard by people in the street.

Many hours later, the same man is seen leaving the tower and locking the front door. He leaves with a serious and determined expression. After slipping the key back into his pocket, he seems to stop in contemplation. After a few moments, he walks away quickly.

Half an hour later, this man returns and nails a short note to the door of the tower. It reads:

"Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Weave Scout Bernard please contact Noric Patteel by leaving a message with the innkeep at the Blade and Stars Inn."

The same message is posted near the White Mask Theater

The sun was moving lazily towards the horizon over the rooftops, lengthening shadows on the cobbled streets. Above the heads of the citizens hurrying to finish their business before the nightfall the trees were stretching their branches to the setting sun, catching the last rays of light for the day.

A gust of the wind made a few leaves swirl in the air, one of them landed on the grey hood of the girl walking towards the Istari tower with a swift fluid gait. She brushed it away absent-mindendly and approached the tower's entrance stopping as her gaze fell upon the note attached to it. Her eyes widened as she stared indignantly at such means of delivering a message. Then she clicked her tongue in disapproval and tore the piece of paper off the nail. As her eyes scanned the text she smirked, then entered the tower.

Shortly after the door flung open and the girl emerged from the building with a furious scowl on her face; she slammed the door behind herself and made her way towards the gates leading out of the city.

For any that visit Baldur's Gate, a large imposing tower stands just one block south of Elf Song Tavern. Any citizen asked about it will reveal that it is called Istari Tower and is home to a fellowship of the Arcane. They apparently claim to be students of the Weave and seek to master its understanding hence calling themselves the Weave Masters. They also claim to be its protectors and promote the responsible use of the Weave thus inviting favor from Mystra herself. Those of arcane background seem somewhat compelled to look into the guild. Some find it as a potential home although some have found it to be an adversary to overcome. Locals and visitors to Baldur's Gate will also notice several notes posted on various bulletin-boards around the city.

"We of the Weavemasters would like to announce that we are seeking those wishing to join our cause - study of the magic, preservation of the Weave and promotion of its responsible use. We have different positions open: for those acquainted with the Arcane arts, those skillful with a blade (guardians) and those specializing in information gathering (scouts).

You are welcome to leave inquiries or applications at the Istari Tower located in the East Gate District of Baldurs Gate, for Bernard Sbach or Aileen Lonergan..."

Over the course of the last week any who walk the nighttime streets of Baldur's Gate have noticed a bright white light emnating from the balcony of Istari Tower. Travellers passing through dismiss the light off as being a permanent magic fixture. Those that have lived in the Gate long enough know that the light is something more. The Exarch has returned to the tower, and keeps vigilant watch over the city once again.

A Letter Delivered to Elias

Unread post by Flasmix »

Master Elias,

I know that you sit at the Istari once more and I am wondering why you decided to not allow Selah into the tower. To me, this came as a surprise considering that she holds the rank of Magus. Was it you who decided to advocate her turning in the key or was it just Bernard? She left the tower quite upset and in tears.

I would offer you to come and visit her, but she is under the effects of some dark magic right now after trying to scry on Bhaal and is unable to move. Please get back to me and explain what's going on.

Thank you,

Myhun Kren

A letter left with the Weaverate

Unread post by ArmyKnife »

To whom it may concern,

I, Thomas Shepard, am formally requesting to join the Weave Masters, to assist in whatever capacity I may. I have served the Whaterdhavian Guard for five years before coming to Baldur's Gate. My remaining two years with the Guard were spent assisting the Watch in various investigations that proved beyond their capabilities.

I have spoken with Bernard about the Weave Masters, as well as the responsibilities and duties of membership. I await your reply.

With much thanks and respect,
~Thomas Shepard.

*a reply is sent to Thomas in an envelope bearing the Weave Masters insignia, inside there is a parchment, covered in elegant, flowing script:*

"Dear Thomas,

Thank you for expressing interest in joining the Weave Masters. Your experience serving the Waterdhavian Guards and then the Watch is most certainly a sufficient recommendation and it leads me to believe that you would like to join the ranks of the Weaves Guardians.

We will try to arrange time for your initiation shortly.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Aileen Lonegran,
Member of the Weave Masters Council."

The following letter appears to have been written hastily, with a few scattered and dried bloodstains in the parchment. The top sports two square holes, the tops of which have been ripped off - as if this were a notebook page.

To the Council of the Weaverate,

I have witnessed much in the countryside these past few days that must be discussed. I have not found any known members of the Weave Masters since meeting Bernard - I fear the events that are occurring will effect us all and that the Weaverate must take special interest in these activities.

With utmost concern,
Thomas Shepard

*a bat finds its way to the weave masters, delivering this message*

To whom it may concern,
I have interest in joining the Weave Masters. I am a wizard with formidable skill in the Art. If you are interested in employing me please send a via this bat. Oh and by the by, the bat responds to his name: Mephion. He is quite fond of mice and would greatly appreciate one if you have any to spare.

*A message is placed under the door of the Istari tower, marked for the Arch Mage of the Weavemasters, and sealed with an unknown seal.*

Arch Mage,

I too am a student of the Weave, a young acolyte Tiefling, trying to study in this prejudice land. But as it would seem I am even unable to rely on fellow students of the Weave or the Weavemasters to protect me. I find this to be very trying, as Some of your own, The Exarch as he introduced himself and one warrior witnessed a man attack me without provocation, only calling me a demon and trying to kill me. Your Exarch did nothing to stop this crime, rather he picked me up and tried to hold me in custody, inside your tower; letting the criminal who attacked me walk away.
They made claims I am a Demon's Priest when in fact I am a Sorceress. They laid claim I summon demons yet I am only of the 6th Circle of Magic, only realizing that power in myself very recently. Claims that I harmed people on the roads when my traveling companions consist of Paladins, Elven Rangers. 3 People of Good Standing one even traveling with your Exarch a Dwarven Lady named Evalina, attested to my helping many along the tradeway when they were in need. I beg of you to find the evil demon Priestess in those deeds.

It is unfortunate that I managed to give your Exarch the slip, however I feel it far below the intelligence for ones of the Weavemasters to believe the words of a man who so wildly cast magic on those he does not know and then flees, over someone who has companions of Good Dieties; who have never witnessed such an act of demonic origins.
I will gladly speak with you personally on this matter, however after being attacked and carted off without any real reason or reasonable proof, I just could not fathom staying in such a perilous position.
I have been told of stories of a Tiefling Guide to Candlekeep, and so i do not understand the prejudice. I guess the examples of one do not offer some hope that others of that race may follow those footsteps.

If you will meet with me, then send a message to the Elfsong tavern and I will pick it up there.

*The girl entered the Istari Tower wearing unreadable expression on her face. Before heading towards the inner chambers she paused to pick up correspondence; after a momentarily hesitation she also took an envelope addressed to the "Arch Mage". Then with a graceful gait she made her way upstairs, and having settled in the library opened a letter from Solarion, a small wry smile touched the corners of her mouth as she was reading it. The second letter caused a glimpse of surprise flash briefly in her eyes and a smirk creeped onto her face. When she was done with reading, she leaned back in the chair glancing up at the ceiling and tapping her index finger on her chin thoughtfully. A few minutes after she started to compose a reply to Solarion, which she sent with a regular messenger:*

"Dear Solarion,

Thank you for your interest in joining the ranks of the Weave Masters. Indeed, a wizard with a talent in the Arcane Arts is always welcome here. But for the convenience of communication may I suggest a meeting where we will gladly tell you more about the Weave Masters purpose and goals and where we will be able to get acquainted with you.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Sincerely.
-Aileen Lonergan
Member of the Weave Masters Council."

Solarion sits beneath a tree along the Trade Way, the warmth of the sun warming his dark hair. He is engrossed in a rather thick book when the sound of wings beating against the air alert him to the presence of some sort of flapping creature. He looks up and is both relieved and excited when he spots Mephion, his loyal bat, flying toward him with a letter clutched in between its feet. The bat flys over Solarion and drops the letter on his lap with obvious skill. The man lets out a slight chuckle at his companion's ostentatious display.

"Ah Mephion...." he says with a grin on his face "Must you always show off, even for such trivial matters as delivering a letter?"

The bat lets out a slight squeak of happiness.

"If you hurry my furry friend, I believe I saw a mouse running in the brush yonder." he indicates a spot of tall grass across the road.

The bat squeaks with delight and zooms over to the tall grass, leaving Solarion to read Aileen's letter undisturbed. He goes over the letter twice, a slight smile cracks on his face. He mutters to himself.

"Ah...it seems they have finally taken notice of me"

He beings to write a reply that reads:

"Dear Aileen,

I am very much excited that you have finally gotten around to responding to my interests in the Weavemasters. I would indeed desire a meeting with you as soon as you are able. Just name the time and the place.

Cordially yours,
*signed*
Solarion
"

In the course of the twenty or so minutes it took Solarion to complete his reply Mephion the bat has returned to his side with a rather large mouse. The bat is greedily devouring its catch as Solarion folds the letter over, preparing it to be sent.

"Mephion." he starts, holding up the newly written letter. "Can you please take this letter to Candlekeep. I am sorry to disturb you during your meal my friend but it seems that you are almost done with your meal..."

With a flap of his wings Mephion takes flight, skillfully grabbing the letter out of Solarion's outstretched hand. Without any further ceremony the bat heads off in the direction of Candlekeep. Solarion watches the bat for a while as he gets smaller and smaller until the bat is nothing more than a tiny pinprick on the horizon. With a stretch and a sigh Solarion returns to his book as the noon sun rises overhead.

*a readheaded kid has been seen walking upto the istari tower door and pinning up a letter*

"To whom it may concern,

The bearer of this letter, while lacking any formal training, seems to bear some talent and has a desire to improve himself. I pen this note in the hopes that the Weave Masters can provide some further instruction and prevent another practicioner from straying off the moral path.

If there are any costs associated with his initial examination and training that 'Ruben' cannot himself support, please leave word for me at the Elfsong or seek me out.

Sincerely,
Arivain Fatesinger"

For the last two days all who reside at Istari Tower have seen the Exarch roaming throughout the halls. At seemingly regular intervals a massive discharge of energy can be heard and felt throughout the tower. For those that have lived in the tower long enough, they know that he is checking and strengthening the wards that are put in place. Older members of the order advise visitors and students to keep a safe distance from the mage as he goes about his business.
