Capture and guild tokens

Unread post by mireigi »

In a PnP setting, whenever someone is captured, they lose all of their belongings. They might regain these belongings later if they manage to escape, are released, or rescued. However, anything of value, either monetary or political, will usually be gone and/or used during the captivity.

Following that line of thought, what is the DM stance on someone being captured, stripped of all their belongings (with OOC consent to hand over all items), and in the process losing their guild token - which can then be used by the captors for access to the captive's guild, provided the guild have no ruling on disguises / facial masks?

In the past, we've had players hand over their items in good faith and some disagreement or the RP never returning the items. In the end, they didn't get their items at all.

Now we've also had bandits who would rob characters on the tradeway who would say "Give us 1,000 gold or your life." or something like that. These bandits would have accepted event a roleplayed gold being handed over. They weren't after actual gold, just the roleplay of it.

And guild tokens have been pretty much only trouble when they find new hands or stay in hands that leave a guild. They're not really meant to be carried by non-members due to NPC guards and various wards guilds have on their areas. Most guild tokens are supposed to be not tradable as well, though sometimes the DM that gives them out forgets to change it. I know I've forgotten once or twice.

So all in all, I think it's a bad idea. There are ways to do just about anything you'd want from this roleplay angle without having to hand over items. If you wanted to capture someone and try to access their guildhall using a key, a DM should be involved.

How soon in the process would a DM need to be involved for capture and infiltration RP using an assumed identity?
