Corpse Question

Unread post by spaceman010186 »

So, My NWN2 crashed (as usual) and I died but my friend grabbed my corpse on the way to the zone. His EFL was bugged and he couldn't see anything, no NPCs, PCs, Transition Spots. He reclogged and still nothing but now my corpse is gone. Can someone help me with this? What happened?

There's a bug where all corpses will disappear from a character when the player's game crashes or he/she disconnects. The one to whom the corpse belong, will get spammed in combat log with red text about an invalid corpse. Take a screenshot of it and send to the DMs. Sometimes they help you out.

Common bug on nwn2; the DMs will not refund any xp loss as they would have to refund everyone else.

Some DMs, a rather large portion of the DM group actually, do give refunds. Why some do it and some don't, we'll probably never know. It's a strange rule anyway.

They're not supposed to.

Also if you died and logged out while being carried, you usually just need to both relog, and your corpse re-appear where you died last.

News to me. I believe those DMs are breaking the rules? *scratches beardy chin*

I'll try that the next time I die and someone crashes/disconnects while carrying my corpse. Although I wonder why the corpse respawn functionality can't happen after a reset as well? Currently if you're not raised prior to a reset, you lose XP.

I think the rule was implemented to prevent abusing the DMs for a free Myrkul when you're alone. The DMs that I've seen help with XP refund have asked for screenshots to back it up, verification from the player carrying the corpse, and screenshots from that player too to show that the corpse bugged/disappeared.

But this isn't a thread about strange rules and why some DMs choose to ignore them/be good people.

To the OP, there are two scenarios in which something strange will happen to your corpse.
  • PC carrying your corpse dies
    • When a PC dies, what happens is that game creates an item of type Corpse in the PC's inventory. Then it sets the name of all Corpse items in the inventory to "Male Corpse" or "Female Corpse", depending on the gender of the PC. Once that is done, it renames the first Corpse item it finds to the name of the PC, and then drops all Corpse items. At least that is the only explanation that fits what's happening with the bugged corpses.
  • PC carrying your corpse disconnects
    • When a PC disconnects, for whatever reason, the game, probably due to a bug, removes all Corpse items from that PCs inventory. This also destroys the link between the Corpse item, and the PC it belongs to, who will get spammed in the combatlog with a message about a missing and instruct the PC player to contact the DMs.
I think the first one is fixable. The second, I'm not sure.

The easy solution would be to not send PCs to the Fugue after a reset, but instead letting them enter the game without any XP loss. It will prevent XP loss from bugged/missing corpses that prevent your PC from getting raised, when they clearly would have otherwise, as well as not punish players for being unlucky and dying shortly before a reset with their companions not able to reach a temple in time. Some might "abuse" it to prevent XP loss from every death, even when alone, by just waiting for the reset to come, but at least they're forced to not play the PC for a while then. It's not the perfect solution, but it's a whole lot better than what is happened today.
