One character two PC's

Unread post by AlwaysSummer Day »

OK so I rolled Maxwell about a year and a half ago and played him through to level 30 as a wizard. I enjoyed RPing him and fighting in dungeons and once I hit 30 I slowly started to RP him retiring from the adventuring life to focus on work (aka RP). Not too long ago I had the brilliant (or perhaps not so brilliant) idea of rolling a second character and calling him Max then RPing them as one in the same. Maxwell is still around for when I want to go to events and use spells while Max is going to be RPed from 1 - 30 and take almost all flavor feats thus allowing me to have my proverbial cake and eat it too. Is this allowed? Is this considered against the rules? I really don't want to rcr Maxwell and not be able to hurt a fly with his reroll but at the same time I could understand why this would be not allowed.

Sorry we do not allow this here. It would be getting the best of two worlds but saying it is the same character. Each character must be its own separate entity. We do not even allow for your characters to know and interact with each other.

I'm not arguing that this should or shouldn't be allowed, but where does it say this in the rules?

Does this include knowledge of another character's existence, perhaps from a shared past, or is it limited to no interaction except through a thirdparty PC on a loose basis?
  • Player A have characters Bob and George. Both characters ICly know player B's character Hans, and they also both know eachother from a shared past.

Bob speaks with Hans, who mention a conversation with George. Bob comments on this, referring to something in their shared past.

Hans then meets with George some time later and states that they met with Bob, whom apparently also know George, and had some interesting things to say about George

George then explains further, and helps Hans understand why they didn't share everything at first. As they part, George asks Hans to give their best regards to Bob.
There is no actual IG interaction between Bob and George, and they don't ever meet, nor is it ever RP'ed that they meet either.

Some players also have more than one character in the same guild. How is interaction between these characters to be handled?

Direct communication is a no go, I understand, for metagaming reasons. But thirdparty interaction is impossible to prevent when players have multiple characters.

It's not complicated, mireigi. Don't mention your other character at all and if someone else does keep it brief, don't build up your other character or engage in a long conversation about him, etc.

Even an interaction through a thirdparty PC on a "loose basis" is breaking the rules.

That essentially means that you cannot have two characters in the same guild, even though both would be ICly wish to join said guild, they are forced to not be IC because of an OOC rule.

I understand why the rule is there: to prevent characters to knowing about information that they would not obtain, but it also puts an OOC restriction on your PCs IC behaviour and desires, which is worse imo.

Could the rule be amended to not include sharing of information between / knowledge of characters in the same guild?

Thats a can of worms. For example, i can have 2 characters that are not in the same guild. With what you say, i can have character A learn some information then share it to character B without compromising character B. I think that is a lot fishy.

No, you're misreading it.

Two characters owned by the same player, who are not in the same guild, can't interact.

Basicly I could create a Monk of Lathander, have him join the Song of the Morning guild, then 3 months later create a Paladin of Lathander and also have him join the Song of the Morning guild.

As the rules are now, either one of those characters can't join the temple as a member of the clergy/staff; or they can both join, but none of them will ever know about anything the other does within or for the temple, which is highly unlikely.

One option is forcing characters to not stay IC, another is forcing the player to godmod the knowledge of another member out of the guild, because that member is also owned by the player. It's a lose-lose situation.

I'd even say you shouldn't be allowed to have two characters n the same guild (maybe with the generic racial guilds like Doron Amar, Kraak Helzak and so on), because of potential metagaming which would be hard to prove.

No, the rule is not going to be changed for this option.

It would still bring up metagaming issues. "But they both heard it at a guild meeting" or "They talked about it together at a guild meeting". No they didn't because they were both not at the guild meeting. Only one of them was at the meeting.

That is the way the DM team has put the rule in place.
