Something has snapped in Nashkel. An angry mob wielding pitchforks and torches has encircled the House of the Guardian. The Priest desperately tries to calm them behind Helmite guards as they hurl rotten fruit and debris at the temple guardians, and rocks at the windows.

The air is rife with a litany of grievances ranging from accusations of failure to protect the township, to outright blame for the maladies which befall them. Tensions run high as the mob grows.

The Nashkel Riots

Tensions in the beleaguered city had been festering for sometime. With a small spark, a fire spread. In confusion and discontent the city erupts into chaos and madness. Rioting, looting, and violence sweep through the streets.

The guardsman barricade themselves in their barracks, the Helmites in their temple, as the fires burn and the violence rages through the night.

--------------
As morning came, and the rioting died down, those who had barricaded themselves through the night emerged to streets of blood and ash. With some calm returning, the guardsmen quickly instituted a state of marshal law, swiftly quelling any threats of the violence breaking out once again.

Rumors spread about the town that amid the rioting, several adventurers took to slaughter of the frenzied citizenry. In the coming days, visitors are expected to receive a colder reception to Nashkel than usual.

NEWS FROM NASHKEL

Image
There are rumors spreading throughout places in the realm where Helm is venerated that his avatar appeared in Nashkel to combat some ancient evil. The domestic unrest which has plagued the township over the last year has largely subsided, coincidentally, alongside the origin of these rumors. However, there has been a focus of resentment directed against Tieflings of late.

Helmite pilgrims from all over the Realms are beginning to visit the site where the avatar of Helm appeared. Otherwise, Nashkel is currently preparing for a long winter. Frequent snowstorms and raids on outlying farmlands by savage beasts are becoming ever more frequent.

NEWS FROM BEREGOST

Image

Beregost is an increasingly popular place for gambling and debauchery, or for ever-vigilant paladins patrolling the region. On the surface Beregost appears as it always did; Thunderhammer still plies his wares, the Song of the Morning still tends to those in need, and the town's agriculture appears to be recovering despite recent storms and the coming of winter. However, petty theft and muggings have become commonplace, few villagers dare to brave the streets at night, merchants traveling through grumble of banditry and extortion, and a group of rabble-rousing villagers are beginning to whisper demands Amn vacate Beregost.

Guards patrolling around the Church of Helm in Nashkel and the Church of Lathander in Beregost both reported seeing someone digging in the grounds near the churches taking dirt....upon further investigation in the daylight, no holes could be found, and no dirt was missing even though guards at both churches swear the shrouded intruder they saw was clearly digging up dirt and putting it into a sack or container of some kind.

Beregost

As days move past, a kitchen aid at the Risen Pheonix can be heard telling customers that she suspects that the local temple is housing drow - again. People in the town square speak of a woman shouting that she refuses to kiss drow. Others whisper of a young pretty lass who had been inside the temple and came out rambling about red-eyed demons and an exorcism. The young lass also said a priest inside tried to contain her and erase her memories...

What is truly going on at the Song of the Morning temple? The priests speak of miracles but some townsfolk are less certain.

A Beregost farmer comes into town, distraught. He speaks of being woken by his cattle lowing and panicking last night. He swears that when he went to see what happened, he could see the shadows swirling around the corpse of one of his prize heifers. He got a terrible feeling of being watched, which chilled him to the bone, and he fled.

In the morning he went to look again, and saw the cow's corpse was wasted and thin, already rotting.

Travellers crossing the Cloudpeaks and heading north bring tales of strange happenings occurring at night.

There are tales of shadows enveloping hill giants, with only dead bodies being left behind when the darkness clears.

There are tales of xvarts being found dead, faces twisted in horror, near the road.

A traveller who spent the night at the Risen Phoenix Inn told a lurid tale of his crossing of the Cloudpeaks. He spoke of witnessing a caravan guard being grasped one night by arms of shadow, and of red glinting eyes in the dark which chilled his soul. He spoke of the piercing shriek of the guard, and the look of anguish on his face when they found the body. The teller of the tale was clearly well into his cups.

It is said one of the priests from the House of the Guardians held a sermon under the open sky, right over the spot where it is rumoured that the Avatar of Helm had appeared to defend the town against an exceptional enemy. Those who participated in the sermon recount tales of the town's hardships, praises for its defenders and a guidance on following the Great Guaridan's teachings.

It is also said three foreign pilgrims, one bearing the traits of one living in the Baldur's Gate area, one of Calishite descent and one of distant northern lands. It is further rumoured they took refugee within the House, to both rest and discuss with the priest.

Travellers of the road between Beregost and Nashkell note an abandoned fortification in the middle of the road with disabled siege weaponry and bodies of dead orcs all over.

Meanwhile...,

It is said Samuel Feldepost III received a stinking package from a troupe of couriers.

A vigilant guardsman is assigned to stand guard just outside Nashkel's Northern Lights Inn after an incident inside. Local rumors speak everything from witches killing an elven merchant to a lost member of a bardic troupe that visited the Phoenix Tavern a month ago.

The innkeeper complains near inaudibly about broken furniture and bloodstains.

The posted guardsman does not speak of the incident as he keeps a keen eye on those entering and leaving the Inn.

Beregost Fair

A fair was put on in Beregost by the Everwatch knights of Helm. Booths were put up in honor of Gond, Helm, Chantea, and Lathander, as well as several of the factions mustered for the revival of Northern Amn.

Some may have noticed a merchant caravan robbed along the Trade Way between Nashkel and Beregost in the past day. The participants in the caravan may have been heard yelling about now missing their prized fine pantaloons.

Lingering long enough, some may have seen a pile of pantaloons returned by a group of adventurers and the caravan ultimately leave for the south after its participants buried some dead and gave the adventurers a reward of fine pantaloons of their own.
