Story writer is human which is a problem.
Meaning that novel writer would glance over source book, get overall wrong idea, then discard 70% of material, and misinterpret whatever is left. Mostly because said writer will have need to be "creative" and concentrate on story, which will cause him/her to discard parts he/she thinks are "not important". Ever saw how "hacking" in hollywood movies compares to real-world experience? That's adaptation quality I expect from D&D novel - butchered lore, mangled beyond recognition in order to get "creative" or "for the sake of the story".

Source books are speciification. Writing fantasy book strictly adhering to that specification is hard, meaning most of the writers will fail to do that.

Also, you really should keep in mind that WotC's primary goal is still earning money, so novel is a way to advertise their product. I would not expect good lore from anything like that... There is dragon age book on my shelf right now. It has nice cover, but contents are still mediocre ad best.
