Background:
Polaz does not know his true origins or parents, but believes one of them to be drow because his cursed appearance. A wealthy ambitious lord bought Polaz from a slave ship when he was still a young child. Although he grew up in a lavish castle somewhere within Calimshan and had the best tutoring and training money could buy, he was still a slave. The lord who acquired him, did so not out of the kindness of his heart, but for his own personal gains. Polaz or the other slaves didn’t even know his name, he was only referred to as “The Lord.” Having a Tiefling taught in the ways of deception, stealing and assassination is a great tool indeed, especially one that can evoke fear by appearing as a drow. Polaz never seen the man as a parent figure or father, actually the lord was rarely seen at all.

This lord had bought other slaves as well, who were being groomed for similar purposes. Some trained in combat, stealth and even magic. Most were human, a few half-elves and half-orcs. Polaz was the only Tiefling though and that didn’t make him special, only a target for bullies as growing up. This was added fuel to the fire of the bitter hatred Polaz bottled up towards other people.

As young man Polaz started to be sent on many missions for the lord. Most of these were theft of magical items and a few assassinations. He was magically bound by a cruel spell placed upon him by the lord. This spell controlled certain aspects of Polaz’s brain, not allowing him to even think about escaping or being free. He was a tool, nothing more.

One night Polaz was sent to steal a magical item from a powerful wizard. Polaz’s stealth abilities were no match for this wizard’s magical ability and he was soon discovered and engaged the wizard in battle. But, the wizard was far too powerful. Polaz evaded most attacks but one strong magical blast hit him and had him seeing stars. He jumped from the closest window; landing in a moat that surrounded the wizard’s tower, barely escaping with his life.

After escaping the wizard’s tower, Polaz noticed a feeling he never had before…freedom. The magical blast from the wizard must have accidently released him from the magical binding spell the lord placed upon him. So, he ran and ran, far and fast as he could.
Polaz later on got hired onto the crew of “The Screeching Void”, a pirate ship that once ran up and down The Shining Sea and The Sea of Swords, raiding merchant ships. He spent a few years on the sea, enjoying the pirate life of drinking, fighting, womanizing, looting and killing. Polaz grew tired of it all though and wanted to strike out on his own and make a name for himself.

He took the gold he had accumulated over the years as a pirate and got off at the Roaringshores, never returning or telling the crew of “The Screeching Void” he was leaving. He now seeks to make a fortune on his own. If he must cut a few throats in the process, he is ok with that. He no longer wants to take orders from anyone ever again.

After spending some time on The Sword Coast, adventuring and treasure hunting, Polaz needed to get away from the overcrowded areas, such as Baldur's Gate, he felt the bustle and noise gnawing on his nerves. He retreated to the north and spent some time wandering in the forests, living off the land and perfecting the art of stealth. He now truly respects the animals of the forest, especially the predators, more then any fellow humanoid.

He has now returned to The Sword Coast, feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever the world throws at him.

Goals:
-Polaz wants to earn enough coin to build his own home in the middle of nowhere and be left alone in peace.
-Find out who and what his parents are or were.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
-Although he doesn't like taking orders from others, Polaz is having trouble being left alone by nosy do-gooders, paranoid elves and paladin types who start trouble with him because of his appearance. He has been thinking he needs to find like-minded individuals that won’t judge him because of his appearance and his shady nature. It is becoming apparent he needs others to watch his back in populated areas. He may eventually seek out a guild or brotherhood to join.

-Become more powerful and return to Calimshan to kill “The Lord.” The one that turned him into the monster he is today and once enslaved him.
