The city of baldur's gate lies in ruins. Corpses cover the street, and smoke rises high into black sky. There is no sun and no stars, only light from endless fires. A gigantic woman in silver armor stands among ruins, her golden hair fluttering in the wind, and her beautiful face ruined by grimace of hatred. “MURDERER!” Screams the the giant, and smashes what is left of ragefeast's tower with a blade made of pure light. “COME OUT AND DIE!” She proceeds to walk through the streets, crushing corpses beneath her feet. She is looking for someone.
Behind nearby house, another figure is sitting, leaning on the wall, and trying to treat her numerous wounds. She has run out of healing supplies long ago, and right now is trying to close bleeding recent stab with a fire, emanating from her finger. Two short blades are lying on the ground behind her. The figure curses under her breath and closes eyes for a moment. She leans on the wall, and waits for a moment, while her wounds slowly heal. In the flicker of nearby light small horns and dirty red hair is visible. It is a tiefling.
“BE CLEANSED!!!” Howls giant warrior of light somewhere in distance and smashes another wall in fit of rage. The tiefling opens her eyes and looks in front of her. Among the corpses lies human woman, pierced by spear, warrior with sword and shield and visible “X” brand on his forehead, a very ancient looking dwarf in blacksmith apron, and an orc. “You are all dead, aren't you.” asks tiefling, addressing corpses. Dead dwarf opens eyes and says “we are. You killed us”. “I did not” says tiefling in matter of fact voice and watches as dead dwarf stands up and picks his blacksmith hammer. “It is your fa-” starts growling the dwarf, as tiefling makes a gesture and sets the walking corpse on fire with a flaming beam. “I said, it was not me” she says calmly, looking at now burning dead dwarven blacksmith. Her eyes are cold. As dwarf's body crumbles to ash, she stands up, picks up her two swords, and makes few short gestures, clearly magical. Flames start running across her weapons and hands, and flickers around her boots. She heads out to what is left of nearby street... as she walks stone starts melting under her feet.
She yells to giant warrior of light in distance - “Hey, I'm here!” and waves to giant with glowing hand. The gigantic woman growls, turns back, and starts running towards lone tiefling, smashing through the ruins, as her hand begins a mighty swing.
Shouting invocation, tiefling starts makes a magical gesture... an infernal flame comes forth, starts forming a beam of fire... and vanishes. Nothing happens. All wards disappear and fire on her blades and hands goes out. The tiefling looks at her hand in disbelief... and understands that all her power is gone. As a last attempt, she starts screaming something very long in infernal and then she is destroyed by blade of light. As it all disappears, she hears flames of the numerous fires laughing at her.
...the dream ends, and a tiefling named Raven wakes up. Radiating extreme heat, she sits up in her stone bed that is covered by charred remains of bedsheets. She looks at cracked gem in her hand in disgust. “You don't ever give up, do you....”... she says to it. She throws away remains of bedsheets, stands up and grabs bottle of firewine from nightstand. She takes a sip, walks to the window, bottle in her hand, and looks outside. Finding this location was hard, since not many people were willing to lend a fireproof room to strange “devil-spawn”... Tiefling sighs. Nightmares kept visiting her night after for many months, without break, and at this point lack of sleep was showing as dark circles under her eyes – despite healing items and enchanted amulets she wore, and despite endless potions she drank every day. It could not continue forever.... yet surrendering gem and releasing what is inside of it was unthinkable.
In the darkness of night, Raven sat at the desk placed far away from the bed, and thought, once again. Few minutes passed, she stood up, took something from her travelling bag (placed in another far corner of the room), and placed it onto table. It was a scroll of parchment, very big one. She unrolled it, and used one of her blades as paperweight to prevent scroll from rolling back. In the darkness of unlit room she studied it for a while... and sighed. It was a blueprint. A construction project of sorts, covered by dwarven runes. Another failure. She leaned back her chair and looked at the window. She remembered a book she wrote, that took weeks of research and thinking. A book the resulted in nothing. She remembered her “companions” that were now nowhere to be found.
She frowned, and felt anger slowly starting to boil within her. Fire flickered along her fingers for a while, and then she finally managed to calm down.
Once again, she remembered words that Victor Nerak said to her, many months ago, and slightly smiled, somewhat bitterly. She stood up, picked up her gear, then started equipping her armor and blades, and finally cast her standard set of protection wards. She then took battle stance, and her hands started glowing again. She looked around dark and empty room, and, once again, summoned a devil.
A humanoid figure materialized in the middle of the room, glanced around immediately getting clear picture of situation. Raven grinned. “Finally. Reasonable one” she said and lowered her blades. “I have a proposition for you. I think you will like it”. She then started explaining. Their talk continued for a long time, and eventually reached some conclusion.
…
Preparations took few weeks. Eventually a small group was assembled and led by her into faraway crypt. Once undead were cleared out, they started setting things up. However, the group rebelled. The mage she hired despite his apparently lacking experience has managed to get a clear picture of the task he was asked to perform, he abandoned almost finished magical circles. An argument broke out, which ended up in a fight. Hirelings turned onto Raven, who was victorios.
Raven sighed and looked at charred unrecognizeable remains of her late hired help which she just burned to ash. She sighed, and cursing her a bit lacking knowledge, continued drawing the circles, alone. Should the task be to difficult for her, she would have another option... rather costly one.
Eventually it was all done. A stone table was standing in the middle of magical circle, with stone arc behind it. Braziers were lit near it. Raven walked around unlit room, took out a scroll with instructions out of her pocket, unrolled it and read it again, making sure everything is in order. Then, once again, she summoned a devil.
….
Few more days have passed. “Raven” finally regained consciousness and opened her eyes, for the first time since she finished drawing the circles and had to kill her hired help. She was lying on the stone table from earlier, which now was covered in her own dried blood. Braziers have long burned out, but a portal has opened in the stone arc. She sat up on the table, opened her hand, and looked at shattered remains of the gem that used to hold imprisoned fiend. The cracked gem has lost its infernal glow and looked empty. She then reached into pocket and took out a small mirror which somehow survived days of thrashing around in agony. She looked into it. She saw an attractive female face with no horns. Two black wings were visible in the mirror. She moved the wings slightly, trying them out, and then started laughing.
“I've done it” she said. “It was not impossible after all”. A new-born attractive-looking erinyes named “Raven”, put her feet on the ground and stood up. She looked around the room, for a moment, and flapped black feathery wings, almost losing balance. She smirked. “It is over. No more nightmares”, she said. She spent some time destroying the circles, then picked up her bag from the corner and walked to the stone arch with glowing portal. For a moment she stopped.
She remembered the beginning. People dying in a fire, working in a smithy, endless days of practice with the blades, her arrival. The day she learned how to summon fire, broken oath and thousands of creatures she sliced to pieces and burned to death without mercy. Her companions that briefly fought alongside her and has since disappeared. Her revenge that was denied, and attempts to make a place for herself, which failed. She dismissed thous thoughts.
Raven walked through the portal, alone, like always. Portal have closed behind her, and the room became empty.
