Background:

Hailing from small farming community not far from Baldur's Gate, Warren joined the local militia as a young adult in order to escape life as a farmhand. He didn't find life in the militia much preferable to that on the farm however, and upon seeing opportunity to become an apprentice to an adventuring wizard, he left his home to study with the wizard in Baldur's Gate.

Warren discovered that he had very little aptitude for magic, or perhaps was merely overshadowed by the wizard's more favored apprentice, Marjorie, a young woman native to the city. Instead, his role was closer to that of a handservant than an apprentice. Warren and Marjorie grew quite close however, and eventually wed.

Not long after their marriage, Warren left his apprenticeship to find a work that provided more than simple room and board. Using what limited skills he had learned from the wizard, he found some employment as a scribe at The Shelf of Many Books.

Only a few years later, his former master met his end during an ill-fated adventure into a gnoll cave. With Marjorie's apprenticeship at an abrupt end, Warren left The Shelf of Many Books, and the couple took the opportunity to open up a small bookstore of their own, stocking volumes both magical and mundane. They were moderately successful and lived a peaceful life above the bookstore together for nearly 50 years.

One fateful evening, a fire broke out in the adjoining building and quickly spread into their own. Warren returned from the tavern to find his home in flames. He entered to find Marjorie succumbed to the smoke. As he attempted to make his way to Marjorie through the debris, he felt the hand of a Flaming Fist Patrolman on his shoulder, was subdued and forcibly dragged from the flames. Warren lost everything in the fire; his livelihood, his wife, his entire life.

Warren awakens after several weeks living on the streets, searching for work and a way to survive.

Goals:

To rebuild his bookstore. Towards this end, he seeks coin, scrolls and all manner of lore.

To master the magical arts.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

Warren holds great contempt towards the Flaming Fist, who he sees as partially responsible for his wife's death, but more than any other, he blames himself. Had he not given up his apprenticeship, and continued his studies all those years ago, he would have surely had the power to put out the flames and save his wife. This has led to a renewed resolve to study the magical arts.

Warren has quickly found that life on the road is no place for a frail wizard and has found reason to recall the basic weapon training he received in the militia, what little he can remember anyway.

Future possibilities - joining the order of scholars from Candlekeep.
