Well holy bo bo.. a write up

Participants: Val'Fein, Sette Fire, Thrar, Istinid Mori'hyanda, Moksha Ma'fer

Sette and Moksha were preparing to leave Sshamath for some training when they noticed Val'Fein leading a tall robed figure towards them. As the two drew close, it became apparent that the figure was an elderly rivvil. What's more, his left hand was firmly gripping the shaft of Val'Feins massive warhammer as he stumbled along. Clearly this rivvil was blind, or nearly so.

Val'Fein explained that he had come across the rivvil in a dangerous portion of the underdark, populated by basilisks. Noticing the surprised looks on Sette and Moksha's faces, he proceeded to describe how the rivvil had come to find himself in the underdark. Apparently the fool had fallen into some rushing water, and been born away on the current. Eventually he ended up close to where Val'Fein found him. As far fetched as the story sounded, the Drow could think of no other plausible explanation.

Val'Fein went on to say that the rivvil had promised to provide useful information in exchange for his safety. That explained why Val'Fein had not simply ended the wretched things life. As the group prepared to enter Gloura's Wings, another Drow approached with a curious look on his face. Sette recognized him and suggested he join them inside. Thrar agreed, and did so.

Once inside, Val'Fein generously bought a bottle of wine and returned to their table with five glasses. Wasting no time, the Drow began to drill the rivvil for information. However, despite being blind, elderly and frail the rivvil was no fool. He explained to the Drow that the information he held was the only thing keeping him alive. Why should he part with it? In exchange for his valuable information, he wanted safe passage back to the surface.

Moksha spoke up, guaranteeing that he would see the rivvil safely escorted to the surface if his information was deemed valuable. Not surprisingly, the rivvil was unwilling to trust a Drow. Instead, he offered to provide them with some of the information, to show it's value. The rest would follow at a later date, or dates. Reluctantly, the Drow agreed.

The rivvil proceeded to provide some of his valuable information with...a poem. As he began to recite it, the Drow looked at each other exchanging perplexed looks. Nonetheless, they listened quietly. When he had finished the recitation, the rivvil explained that the poem was an old one that supposedly held the clues needed to find something long forgotten. He withdrew a small key from his robes and handed it to Val'Fein, explaining that it would open that which they were to seek out.

The Drow puzzled over the poem for some time, and eventually put together a theory. The poem seemed to describe the path from Sshamath to the Phaerlock Temple, where they were to seek out a "place of rest". Deciding that it was worth checking out, Zarmoon was commissioned to keep an eye on the rivvil in their absence.

Just as the group was about to head out, Val'Fein suddenly remembered a prior engagement. He handed the key to Moksha and wished the group good luck. Sette, Thrar and Moksha nodded goodbye to Val'Fein and made their way up the spiral out of Sshamath.

The trip to the Phaerlock Temple was rather uneventful, as the group decided to make most of the journey cloaked in invisibility. Upon arriving at the Temple, they began to search for a "place of rest". Methodically working their way to the left at all times, they eventually came to a sarcophagus and Sette suggested that it was likely the "place of rest" that they were seeking.

The group began to inspect the sarcophagus for a keyhole on which to use the key. When Moksha touched the sarcophagus he could feel magic being drained out of him. Pulling his hand back instinctively, he turned to look at his two companions. Suddenly a Phaerlock emerged from the shadows a short distance from the sarcophagus, and began to move towards it.

Speaking in draconic, the Phaerlock asked who was there. It must have seen Moksha's hand as his invisibility spell was being drained away. Thinking quickly, Moksha spoke in rather mediocre draconic, telling the Phaerlock to get back to it's post. Amazingly, the Phaerlock grudgingly did as he was told.

Moksha moved back to the sarcophagus, and gingerly touched it again to confirm that indeed it was sucking away the magic of his invocations. Unfortunately, a second Phaerlock showed up. It was similarly convinced to go about it's business, but the Drow decided that it was too risky to continue with them present.

Moksha gave the signal to attack, his blast targeting the two visible Phaerlocks. Much to his surprise, they resisted the blast. Even more shocking, eight more Phaerlocks appeared from the shadows. Hastily strapping on his shield, Moksha moved forwards to meet them while Sette and Thrar attacked from behind.

It quickly became apparent to Moksha that he was in over his head. The Phaerlocks began to swarm around him, using well placed attacks to strike with great efficiency. Just before they had completely encircled him, he made the tough decision to flee for the nearest shadow. Ducking into it just in time, he limped a short distance away.

As soon as Moksha vanished from sight, the Phaerlocks turned their attention on Sette and Thrar. Both were blasting as quickly as possible, but the Phaerlocks were too numerous. As they swarmed Thrar, Sette made herself invisible and then continued to blast the Phaerlocks while somehow remaining concealed. Thrar fought bravely, but fell quickly to their lightning quick attacks.

Worried that they might do the same to Sette should her invisibility wear off, Moksha emerged from the shadows, transforming himself into a demon-form. The Phaerlocks once again swarmed him, but their attacks, while still potent, had less of an effect. He clawed at them, keeping their attention off of Sette while she continued to melt their flesh with repeated acidic blasts. Finally, the last of the Phaerlocks fell.

Moksha remained in demon-form, allowing his wounds to heal themselves. Sette moved over to help Thrar, reviving him with the aid of a magical scroll. Though quite beat up, Thrar was able to stand on his own after his wounds had been bandaged.

Just as Moksha shifted back to his normal form, a voice called out from the shadows. It stated that it had been about to drive it's blade through demon-form Moksha. When asked to show itself, the "ghost" did something unexpected...it bashed the sarcophagus with tremendous force, coming into view as it did so. The "ghost" was in fact a Drow named Istinid, the group soon found out.

As Istinid unleashed his strength on the sarcophagus, a flash of light appeared and all of his spell protections were immediately stripped from him. Moksha carefully touched the lid, confirming that Istinid had managed to remove the magic-stripping effect from it. The group managed to push the lid completely off, and looked inside to see an extremely old corpse. While much had obviously rotted away, a belt, armor and amulet remained intact.

Thrar, Sette and Moksha pulled the corpse from the coffin, and Moksha checked the bottom of the coffin for anything else of value. His hand passed through the bottom, obviously a false-bottom, and after feeling around for a short time he withdrew four diamonds! Unfortunately for him, the others noticed the diamonds and seemed to want their cut. Moksha tossed one to each of them, even Istinid. He had helped them open the sarcophagus after all.

Istinid leaned down and picked up the amulet from the corpse, inspecting it for a few moments. He tried it on, demonstrating it's magical effects by suddenly vanishing from sight. Moksha asked to look at the amulet, obviously interested in it's magical properties. As Istinid began to hand the amulet to Moksha, it started to glow with a red light, the intensity growing to a bright red as Moksha took the amulet in his hand. After inspecting the amulet closely, Moksha handed it back to Istinid, the red light fading once more. Clearly the amulet had some affinity for Moksha, so he asked Istinid, Thrar and Sette if they minded if he keep the amulet. Istinid seemed a bit hesitant, so Moksha offered his amulet in return. Much to Moksha's surprise, Istinid agreed.

Meanwhile, Thrar had been examining the belt, and decided to try it on. He exclaimed that it was just the sort of magical artifact that he had been searching for. Sette and Istinid both agreed to Thrar keeping the belt. Sette took the armor, which though she did not plan to use it, would probably fetch a good price back in Sshamath. Having finished inspecting the amulet, Moksha decided to try it on. As soon as he affixed it to his neck, a bright flash emanated from the amulet and Moksha's eyes went vacant.

Quote:
He saw himself as a rivvil champion of Tyr, the man's entire life in fast-forward, his important deeds, and his eventual trek into the depths of the earth, culminating in his burial in the sarcophagus.

A voice rings out in his head "What, a Drow?! This is quite unexpected. But this one seems different."

After a few moments of silence, the voice once again speaks "This should be interesting. Yes, you and I will be a most interesting pair."

In the meantime, Sette and Thrar had been waving their arms in front of Moksha's face, trying to make him snap out of it, to no avail. As the voice fades in his head, Moksha suddenly snaps back to reality, visibly disoriented. He also looks slightly different, somehow.

Deciding that lingering in the Phaelock Temple any longer would be a bad idea, Thrar, Sette and Moksha decide to make their way back to Sshamath. Istinid takes his leave from the group, continuing towards his own destination.

The trip back to Gloura's Wings is uneventful, thanks to invisibility cloaking the group. The elderly lost rivvil is deep in sleep, so the group decide to leave him be for the time being. Questions and answers can wait, for now.
