Background:
A dimly lit back room of a tavern is filled with a dozen men, none of which are of the savory kind. They clank their tankards together while they share tales of their latest plunders and women they have conquered. The door swings open; a large bearded man stalks in, his presence commanding respect. He makes his way through the crowd of men and sits at the head of the table. He lays out a stack of parchments as he begins to speak.
“Alright, pipe down! We got our new target and this one’s no walk in the park so listen carefully. It’s taken months to gather intelligence on this guy and you better damn well know it wasn’t cheap either.” The grizzled mercenary sifts through a few parchments then clears his throat before continuing. “First recorded encounter with this guy was in Calimport. We think that's where he's originally from. He grew up in thieve guilds, learning the tricks of the trade. Not just one guild either, every time one guild fell to another guild, the sod managed to survive the turf war and get assimilated into the next. You name a job and you can bet your hide he’s done it. Run-ins with the law were frequent but he always managed to slip away.”
He sets down a few of the parchments and then scans over a fresh page as he continues, “We can only assume that he got in over his head at some point because he vanished from the city and popped up again far north in the city of Waterdeep.” The mercenary is cut off by the sharp, demanding voice of one of his men “This guy got a name?” The grizzled mercenary’s eyes dart up from the page to eye the man squarely. “That’s the trouble with keeping track of him. He goes by a list of aliases, to name a few “Vincent”, “Felix”, “Vaster”…”Hank?” He pauses and quirks a brow at the uncharacteristically plain name before continuing, “and we believe the latest one has been “Roland”.
Setting down another page he reads from the next one “After doing a lot of gambling we presume he got into major debt because he vanished and then he was reported to have moved on to Baldurs Gate. The bastard really thrived in this place. Reports claim he made a dwelling in the slums but did all his work in Bloomridge, the city core. He became known as a regular at the Blushing Mermaid tavern.” A squeaky voiced young lad in the group pipes in ”Hey I’ve been there!” “You shut your mouth!” barked the grizzled leader before returning to scan the page he was reading from. “He started doing bigger jobs, robbing nobles, doing espionage work and selling the information to the highest bidder. This got him a lot of attention because the information he sold apparently got some people on the city counsel in a lot of trouble.”
“So, is that who hired us to track this guy down?” a soft-spoken member of the group asks from the dark corner of the room. “No” the leader replies, “Our patron is from Calimport. Seems someone hasn’t forgotten about him and is looking to bring him back home, preferably alive.” The mercenary leader sets down the parchments and puts his hands on the table and leans forward, eyeing his band sternly. “We know the louse is here in Neverwinter. If we don’t take him now he might slip out and make it to Luskan where it’s far more difficult for us to operate. We can not let that happen!” He narrows his eyes as he continues. “We get this guy and the pay will set us up for a nice long while, so stay sharp and use all your resources. Don’t try to take him alone either, he knows how to defend himself and knows even better when he’s beat so don’t give him any chance of escape!”
The men all nod and reply in unison “Yes sir!”. The mercenary leader nods approvingly as he dismisses them with the wave of his hand. The room quickly empties as the he sits back down in his chair and reaches for his tankard. He notices a lone figure standing in the dark corner of the room. Squinting his eyes as he looks closely at the man, he demands, “The hell you doing still standing there? Get out there with the rest!”. The man approaches slowly, stepping into the light of the lantern; his piercing ruby eyes flare under his hood as he nears the mercenary. Feeling threatened, the mercenary begins to sit up and reaches for his sword but is stopped by a sharp pain in his chest as he falls back in his chair gasping for air, a bolt stuck in his chest. The man hovers over him and grabs hold of the bolt, twisting it into the mercenary’s chest as he whispers, “The name’s Rinzler.”
Rinzler stands up straight as he watches the grizzled mercenary take his last breath. A moment of satisfaction is all he allows himself before quickly making for the window and slipping out the back of the tavern. Pulling his hood low as he walks at a calm pace, he can hear the commotion and the screams of horrified patrons as the mercenary’s body is found. He makes his way through the alleys and to the main street leading to the city entrance where a merchant caravan is in their final preparations before setting off. He nods to the caravan leader who returns a knowing nod. He hops on the back of the wagon as it begins to move, giving an insincere salute to the city of Neverwinter as the caravan sets off.
Goals: Eluding assassination or capture. He is trying to escape his past, but wants to discover who exactly is after him, which can lead him to his old ways. While trying to escape his past, he finds himself a little lost in his daily life. His identity is so tied up into what he once was that he now finds himself unsure of who he is.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: He's made many enemies in his past that would love to catch up to him for pay back. Also, the information gathered on him is not entirely true.
