The day the Spiders Came!!!

The Day of the Spider Came

Breaking the monotony of just another day at the docks, slowly, screams started bellowing from the alleys of the Baldur's Gate Harbor. Soon, people were seen running through the streets... followed by several giant spiders, wrecking havoc upon the harbor.

Rather quickly, several local adventurers and the stouter and surlier harbor workers started to band together, slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning the creatures to death with whatever was available. The smaller and less stout, various cats, chamber maids, wenches, and other less capable, would fall prey to the creatures. After a few hours, the Flaming Fist are sent through the streets in force to clean out remaining spiders and secure the streets. The Flaming Fist compound remains closed to any visitors for the remainder of the day.

Rumors quickly spread regarding the sudden infestation of Giant Spiders. Ranging from a remnant of the plague, to demonic worship, to some dark relic tampered with by nobles, to a punishment from the gods, to the work of foreigners...

Following the discovery of some spider nests in the cities interiors, The Flaming Fist quickly issue a bounty to local adventurers (low level parties encouraged to partake, setup till server reset (should be good until around 0:00 server time) Post your screenshots and stories in Elfsong ((****HERE****)... RP fights with spiders if someone cleaned them ahead of you), to scour the city and destroy any remaining spider presence.

((***FYI: GOld piles at spider nests represent IC bounty from Flaming Fist. Not all nests have a bounty, but most should***))

A rather stoic looking wood elf with long brown hair and a scarred and milky-white eye wanders into the Merchant League in the early afternoon the same day as the infestation. The muscular elf, after taking a job from the merchant Elad, would pause as he turned towards the exit, pointed ears twitching at the sound of skittering coming from one of the offices. Wearing a deep frown, the elf moved to pry the door to said room open. Within mere seconds of opening the office, the elf would leap back and draw a flaming elven blade from his sheath, then proceed to dismember the gigantic spider that launched itself from a large nest which had seemingly been recently erected in the corner of the room.

Still scraping spider bits from his sword and boots, the elf then turns to Elad, his expression reverting to the previous stoic variety, "Ahem... it seems a rather large spider had taken up residence and nested within your office here. You may wish to see to that."

After sheathing his massive curved blade, the disfigured elf would proceed to exit the premises and out to wander and around the Docks for some time thereafter, but only offering bemused looks at the other buildings while he did.

The Flaming Fist issue a bounty to adventurers willing to sweep through the local taverns, temples, and other interiors and clear out the remnants of the spider infestations and their nests.

(((setup should be good until today 2300ish forum time(till next reset). IF you find a nest which has already been cleared, RP a small spider encounter. All levels 5+ welcome, do it in groups and use it as an RP pretext. Any gold you may find, treat it as being granted by the Flaming Fist as a bounty after your quest.)))

"...but don't you think we should have a look for that spider problem?"

Reuken slows and stops, turning to look towards the inner compound of the Flaming Fist headquarters, and the gaggle of itinerants within. He keeps his ears pricked, listening. While something as banal as spider infestations did not bother him--he preferred to adopt the practice of "live and let live" when not related to him--the rumours regarding periodic giant spider infestations gave him pause. Judging from the worried and hushed tones he heard of spiders invading houses, and the bounty offered by the local Flaming Fist, he surmised that this was no normal infestation.

He glanced up at the sky, wondering if the Lone Wolf set him on this course for that reason. Despite not knowing if it was true or not, he felt a little prick at his pride nonetheless.

"We've been waiting to hear something," an old woman's voice replied, and in his mind, Reuken shook his head. Times must be difficult in the Sword Coast for the elders to hunt spiders, he mused, but kept his ears erect and listened.

"If the Giant Spiders have found their way into the city, it's a distinct possibility they may be coming from the Underdark," a man's voice remarked, and Reuken can't help but lift his eyebrows. "That means a tunnel, or a passage somewhere. That means potential Drow invaders. Not saying the Fist aren't doing their jobs, but..."

"I thought there were spiders all over the city," another voice piped up, summarising the man's thoughts in a more tactful way.

"Well, I've learned to always expect the worst and hope for the best," came the reply.

Even for your perspective, Reuken thought, you sound as if you have never regarded the existence of large spiders in your life. The possibility of dhaerow is distant enough even for the worst. He glanced to the side as a large, armoured man brushed by him to join the others milling about. I suppose such a suggestion would have merit, nonetheless.

"I did not expect to see so many well-armed warriors to show up for a few spiders," that old woman's voice remarked, and he had to agree. A carnival of idiocy, he decided, and with a snort, he turned to walk off.

--

After a moment of taking in the buzz of the city, Reuken was left with the urge to travel somewhere quieter, and the vindication that the adventurers reflected the city as a whole in sensibility and wit. Unfortunately, some of the people he would rather ignore were paying well to perform simple tasks, and to his dismay, the money he thought sufficient to survive proved inadequate in the face of the prices demanded for simple living necessities. Thus it was in the process of retrieving an aggrieved upper-class citizen's ring for filthy lucre that the man found himself trawling in the fetid, sludgy muck of the sewers below the eastern district.

His eyes traced along the moist stone passageways, breathing as lightly as possible to mitigate the stench offending his nostrils. The heavy weight of his swords hanging by his right hip were small comfort in the face of skittering echoing down the tunnels, far beyond even his enhanced eyesight. He clasped the hilt of his blade as he rounded a corner.

Sudden loud skittering was the only warning he got before seeing a quartet of massive, hulking spiders clamber from the gloom-shrouded passageway to his left, beady eyes gleaming and mandibles clacking with murderous intent. With a grimace, Reuken retreated, loosening the hilt of his blade and drawing it free, its silver blade shining off the distant torchlight, and backed himself into the adjacent wall, holding his blade with both hands, aimed for his imminent foes. The spiders paused and clicked angrily, but had no choice save to face him should they attack. And attack they did.

The fight was long and brutal. Fangs and steel gleamed, and Reuken swung his blade with both hands, hacking at whatever he could reach. Sometimes his swings skittered off hard carapace, but more often they struck true, piercing the vulnerable joints or the thin flesh of their bloated undersides. Bilious fluid mingled with the muck already present and clung to the grim-faced man as he chopped what he could reach. Blood flowed where the spiders' fangs and claws pierced his defenses, and his right arm was a mess of red and white as his own blood mixed with that of his foes. A burning feeling settled in his flesh, spreading from his wounds, and he grimaced at the feel of poison.

Finally, the last of the spiders lay in a twitching heap on the floor, quickly stilled as Reuken's boot crunched down on its head. He scraped his boot over a patch of filthy cloth discarded off to the side and looked over the corpses, ears pricked. He could hear more spiders skittering and scurrying out of eyeshot, followed by the occasional anguished wail of some sewer denizen falling prey to the roaming, unnatural predators.

With a grunt, he knelt to carve the mandibles from the spider's crushed head, and turned to do the same for the others. They will suffice as proof for the Fist.

A moment later, with four sets of mandibles hanging from his belt, Reuken continued on his way, ears pricked, silver sword at the ready.

The hin Thistle had gone down through the black market in the docks. As she reached the sewers she noticed many lifes near her. Being trained as a ranger and wilderness stalker she had no trouble following tracks and life signs to the northern part of the stinking tunnels wading through the putrid water.

And indeed she encountered 8 spiders in one of the bigger rooms to the north. She exterminated them in a swift and efficient matter. She even found some gold among them.

After that she went to the new adventurer guild building where she saw many webs but no spiders.

Finally she decided to follow two tall people back into the sewers. Partly because she was worried about them partly because she suspected they were up to no good. Eventually she stalked them finding a ring for a woman in the City. Their conversation didn't apport any wrong-doing, thus Thistle left them alone.

She left the sewers again and talked with a flaming fist patrol. Reporting her findings.

9th of Tarsakh, 1351
The Temple of Tyr
It was early morning when the missive came. She'd been back for two weeks now, and already Cecilia had settled into something of a curious new routine, a morning walk through the docks. Unlike days passed, however, her peaceful contemplation was interrupted by the tinny voice of an adolescent child.

"Cecilia, Cecilia. I've got a note for you, I does!" the boy ran over to the blonde woman, easily identifiable in her leathers of rich purple. He thrusts out a small piece of folded parchment, breath slightly ragged as though he had come in a hurry. The Lady-Knight lofted a golden brow, taking it gently and in turn wrapping the boy's grubby fingers around a handful of gold coins. Unfolding the slightly crumpled parchment, her blue eyes scanned the paprys with a sharp nod as she turned and headed for the Temple of Tyr with haste.

Upon entering the temple, Cecilia was greeted by the sight of High Priest Eldric banging on the door to the conference room, distress evident in his tone. "Ethan! Ethan!!" the mutton-chopped priest called out, stopping the Lady Knight briefly in her tracks before hurrying over.

"Your Grace," she offered, concerned in her approach. "I came as soon as I received word. Whatever is the problem?"

"My acolyte Ethan... he went into the office to fetch some scrolls. He ... cried out... and told me to run... then he barricaded the blasted door." Edric explained, shaking his head as he sat and placed it in his hands. Cecilia's brow pinched in a frown, keen gaze shifting toward the wooden door as she placed a reassuring hand on the shoulder of the High Priest. "There were some terrible noises... then quiet... I can't get the blasted door open."

Withdrawing her hand, she gives the older gentleman a small nod and paces over to the door. Her slender fingers drift along the seal of the inner door frame, before placing a palm in the wooden centre with a slight drum of her fingers. Lining up her shoulder with the weakest part of the barricade, she glances back in the Cleric's direction. With the go-ahead, the blonde focuses her gifted strength and rams herself against the door, shattering it with the impact.

A screech and the clicking of mandibles ricochets off the stone walls of the small room, the ire stirred of a number of poisonous spiders whose size mirrored that of domesticated dogs. With a leap one of the arachnids sunk it's pincers into the woman's arm, coaxing a pained growl from the woman as she drew her blade. One by one the spiders fell in a mess of toxic ichor, splattering their life force over the tiled floor. Ethan was alive. Injured and heavily poisoned, but alive.

As the acolyte was tended to by a relieved Eldric, the High Priest purging his unconscious form of toxins and invoking the blessings of Tyr to heal his wounds, Cecilia saw to the destruction of the sticky nest in the room's corner. Skewering and smashing the eggs, she confirmed the death of and cleaned up the remains of the eight-legged corpses; save for a single pincer she wrapped in a silken handkerchief for further analysis. As bid by the High Priest, Cecilia departed the temple soon after, taking news of the discovery to the temple of Ilmater.
