First thing that comes to mind is Telekinesis.

It wasn't useless, it was exactly what you wanted to know, lockonnow. If you had read the link that Tsidkenu had given you'd know that Telekinesis can push, pull, or even perform more finesse based movements like turning a key in a lock. Unexplored is also correct. You can use the "Violent Thrust" version of the spell to fling a target towards any other target within range, in any direction you want basically.

In game terms Gandalf and Saruman were high leveled Wizards spamming Telekinesis spells at each other in a Mage muscle match, with the caveat that they needed their staff as a focus to cast their spells.

An alternative would be that their staves were enchanted with the Telekinesis spell, and they were burning charges rapidly as they fought.

EDIT: Also it wouldn't be a grapple, but a Disarm maneuver to steal Gandalf's staff from his hands. Apparently Saruman had the Improved Disarm feat :D

I think I'll put the lock on now, before this gets heated. Please try to be civil in the future :)
