Assuming a 5mbps upstream, they only need approximately 200 nodes to stifle a 1Gbps pipe. Joe's DC doesn't guarantee 1Gbps, it's bursted (carrier hotels use this business practice to make a profit at an approximate 30% over subscription). If the pipe in is saturated, no amount of IDS, firewalls, or blacklisting is going to solve the problem, you'll need a bigger connection or a different IP.
