Computer Broken?

Unread post by Israe »

Soooo, I've been absent for some time. Reason is my computer was working fine one night. Next night I get on the internet would keep freezing. I lag out within a minute of being on. If I stream a youtube video it loads like 1/10 of the way, freezes for like 10 seconds, then loads fast as hell, freezes. This is not an internet provider issue either, as I've tested on multiple networks. Ontop of that, when it freezes I can't open any of the computer files effectively, as if the whole system is locking up. I don't appear to have this problem offline, and have screened my computer completely for viruses. Tried system restore. I'm at a loss, someone please tell me how to fix this. Thanks.

No expert but...

Have you tried the simple things, such as restarting the router? The magic box where internet comes from?

You may want to test the video memory. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/having-prob ... ts-memory/

You could be having memory (RAM) issues. You might want to make a bootable memory test disk and run some tests: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10 ... est86.html

These test could take a while, so, be prepared to not use your laptop for a while if you have to run these tests.

It could be something else simple, but more info may be needed to diagnose your issue/s. Some people have trouble with new graphics drivers. Maybe someone else can chime in. on other potential problems.

*edit*

Also, you might want to check your temps and voltage regularly: http://openhardwaremonitor.org/

Download Malwarebytes Antimalware the free edition, install it, update it and let it scan your computer for malware and spyware. Usually most computer problems are related to many malware existing on your computer

From the specs I see its notebook, which makes it harder to diagnose by simply replacing parts and look how it would behave

So need to diagnose more. Is it happens only when browser is opened, or with browser closed too?
Try this to understand what is really lagging:
Right Click on the Taskbar, Start Task Manager
there choose Performance tab, and in right-lower corner - performance monitor
you should be able to see the windows opened when it lags. Take notice what is loaded to 100% - is it CPU, Disk, Network?
If its CPU - take notice which process does it.

Also may try offline games, offline video to test hardware
Try wired connection if you currently use wireless, and other way around (disable wireless if you test wired - don't run with two connections simultaneously)

As far as I see now it's most likely
a. virus, which you missed
b. network card or other driver corrupted
c. antivirus or other software
d. bad sector on hdd where resides some software that runs when it lags

other antivirus, live operating system usb flash

Well, did malware scans, searched a lot. I don't have anything hitting 100%, doesn't matter wired or wireless. Offline video games and movies work. Once utilizing internet, it goes in and out intermittently still, so I'm thinking drivers. How do I troubleshoot them?

If it is limited to when the Internet is active, assuming you have tried to reboot/give the router a break (up to 15-30 minute break)

If you're using a wireless connection, try disabling your wireless component and use a cable instead, if this is not possible borrow or buy a cheap wireless USB device and see if that fixes the problem.

As for troubleshooting drivers you could uninstall the drivers in the device manager and reinstall the newest verson.

You have
Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter
and
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

both devices drivers hardly could go off simultaneously, though windows network stuff may
I would try to un/reinstall any antivirus and firewall stuff you have. also try this command in console:

netsh winsock reset

after which reboot is required

and clean up processes in autoruns
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... s/bb963902
this is most powerful instrument, but do it very carefully
comparatively safe tabs are:
Logon (but dont touch Userinit and shell)
Sheduled Tasks (these got good descriptions)
Image Hijacks and AppInit (these best be empty but some antivirus may reside there)

Try doing a system restore. Whenever my comp acts funny and I cant figure out why I do a system restore and most of the time it corrects the problem.

That's a reasonable approach a lot of the time. It might well be either something newly installed or something has got corrupted.

However despite virus checks it may well be that something has gotten installed on your computer that eats up your bandwidth. I would download some good tools on another machine put them on a flash drive, boot up the laptop in safe mode with no networking, plug the flash drive in and run the tools.

As to what tools; well specialist tools get updated and it's hard to stay on top of them, but I find that HijackThis is very good for certain malware that others don't detect; I'd also recommend Emsisoft, Comodo Cleaning Essentials, Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (not the same as the Anti-Malware) and GMER. I haven't tried aswMBR, but I've heard good things.

I'd also run a web based scan - I generally use Trend Micro Housecall.

If you want to check to see what is using bandwidth, I suggest netlimiter: http://www.netlimiter.com/

Alternatively, you could try traffic shaper: http://bandwidthcontroller.com/trafficShaperXp.html

Wireshark is another alternative. It is an amazing piece of software, but has a learning curve: https://www.wireshark.org/

Try AdwCleaner before doing anything drastic.
