Hard to play evil.

Unread post by Maximvs »

I find it hard to play evil under the PG 13 rule. Would you people like it if we kept the surface as PG 13, but made the underdark PG 16 ? It would be more interesting, no?

I don't think it's possible due to the possibility of surface-UD interaction. And we don'T want them to be too seperated. They are enough already.

The trick might be, to let everyone imagine what not-PG13 actions will be done, without actually roleplaying it (blacked out scenes)

I think it would be possible. The PG 13 and 16 has to be attributed to the zones. The moment you step on the surface, you agree it to be PG 13. The moment you step in the UD, you agree it to be PG 16. That would allow us to recreate a far more UD feeling to the UD. As things stands now, even slave RP is abolished.

I don't want to rant against this server, but rather in general ; I can't seem to find one real drow house in all of NWN 1 and 2 servers combined, with both cunning and terrorizing matrons and yath'rins with slaves. plots, mushroom gardens filled with corpses, backstabbing, low blows and etc.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is Rated T by the ESRB, which means it is a game for ages 14+. We try to honor that play experience with our rules.

It is not hard to RP situations under the T rating, for all it affects is how you go about describing the interaction. Omitting content that is beyond the Rated T profile does not lessen the impact of the situations being brought forth, but it does allow for players to receive the experience they expected when they bought the game.

Pg13 is a movie rating in the US. It basically means there is no sex, excessive swearing, nudity, or grusome violence. A clever player once called this BG13 which is epic. Movie ratings in the US are not enforced by law but act as advisories to parents.

Teen is a video game rating used around the world. In the US the system is enforced by law during videogame sales with a rating Mature or over so Teen is available to anyone. It is very common to PG13 otherwise.

The "BG13" rating simply put keeps those Haven players from being creepy around people who don't want ****** ************ ** **** ***** ********** including minors who may join us.

Too many prude people, sensitive people and people believing we are responsible for raising minors online are playing here for any change to occur.

Also the "game rating" argument got old the 1st time it was mentioned, years back.

Abandon the thought. For your own good and sanity.

But these people would still have their safe space, on the surface.

PG 16, or rather the old rating, did they change it a while back? lol... anyways, it meant some horror allowed, just nothing too descriptive - graphic and no sex either. Fade to black. So no, PG 16 wouldn't bring people from "social" servers over, while still opening up new things that we are supposed to see in the UD, like for example, slavery.

"PG-13" setting does more than create a policy against erotic role play (ERP). . .

[link to Wikipedia article about the MPAA rating system]
PG-13 – Parents Strongly Cautioned
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Parents are urged to be cautious. Some material may be inappropriate for pre-teenagers.
Violence
Hidden: show
Depictions of violence are generally restricted to PG and above. The violence in a PG rated film will not be intense, while violence that is both intense and persistent will generally require at least an R rating. Violence is not prohibited in G rated films, but if present will be minimal.
Language
Hidden: show
Snippets of language that go "beyond polite conversation" are permitted in G rated films, but no stronger words are present. Profanity may be present in PG rated films, and use of one of the harsher sexually-derived expletives will initially incur at least a PG-13 rating. Multiple occurrences will usually incur an R rating as will the usage of such an expletive in a sexual context. Nevertheless, the ratings board may still award a PG-13 rating passed by a two-thirds majority if they believe the language is justified by the context or by the manner in which the words are used.
Substance abuse
Hidden: show
Drug use content is restricted to PG-13 and above. An example of an otherwise PG film being assigned a PG-13 rating for a drug reference (momentary, along with brief language) is Whale Rider. The film contained only mild profanity, but was rated PG-13 because of a scene where drug paraphernalia were briefly visible. Critic Roger Ebert criticized the MPAA for the rating and called it "a wild overreaction".
Nudity
Hidden: show
Nudity is restricted to PG and above, although only brief nudity is permitted in a PG rated film. Nudity that is sexually oriented will generally require an R rating. As of 2010, the MPAA has added a descriptor of "male nudity" to films featuring said content.
Sexual content
Hidden: show
The MPAA does not have any explicit criteria for sexual content other than excluding sex scenes from G rated films.

[link to ESRB Rating]
T-Teen
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 13 years and older; they can contain moderate amounts of violence (including small amounts of blood), mild to moderate use of strong language or suggestive themes, and crude humor.
M-Mature
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 17 years and older; they can contain content with an impact higher than the "Teen" rating can accommodate, including intense and/or realistic portrayals of violence (such as blood, gore, mutilation, and depictions of death), stronger sexual themes and content, partial nudity, and more frequent use of strong language.

basically "bg-13" means that anything that is beyond the maturity level of a 13-year old is against server policy.

I find that few players are respectful enough about such mature roleplay. Past has shown that players cannot stay even within broader boundaries and thus, they have been tightened and we have the rules we do.

There would never be areas on the server that had a different maturity rating...

I am curious though, what -exactly- would PG16 allow you to do that you cannot currently?

Stinking rules. Imo a game that primarily rewards players for killing sentient beings should tolerate strong language. *scratches head

Past has shown players caught doing something wrong and got hammered even politely and left like scolded children.

Also, some has left because of the Disneyland RP enforced here.

Others have left because of butthurtness over death where there isn't even penalties for it.

The server culture encourage immaturity and lack of consequances for choices . You know, like adult life?

I've tried a lot of mature server, and the amount of "T_T" over trivial things is FARLESS numerous. I got forced Permakilled, a lvl 29 character. It hurts, it sucks, but hey! A new opportunity for a new character.

Grymhild you kind of cherry picked my post. I already stated what PG13 meant although I admittedly did not give the wiki definition I did give a broad over view. My statement about BG 13 keeping out haven player style RP followed that and I do still believe strongly that BG13 is what does this. If we increase it to M or R type ratings then we will be practically inviting ERP.

If you feel you need to swear and ERP to be evil you are really not putting forth much effort. The Forgotten Realms has a slew of swearwords to choose from

Haularake: - God-damnit
Hrast (or the southern hrammar): - Damn
Naeth/naed (or the southern orbal): - Dung (exclamation) aka S***
Parharding: - A swear word used as an adjective ("Parharding wizard!")
Sabruin: - Get lost or up yours (v. harsh) aka go F*** yourself
Scorchkettle: - Woman who quickly mouths off to those who raise her ire. aka B****
Stlarn: - Polite equivalent of F-word (about as blasphemous as "darn" used where we might say "screw" or "screwing" (stlarning) "They can't kell anything without stlarning up!", "Stlarning bandits!"
Turnshield: - Polite cormyrean term for bastard.

I found these with about a 5 second search on google. There are probably dozens more including special terms used in the various languages. The rule while technically prevents you from describing torture in detail the simple fact of the matter is it is allowed 99.9% of the time although you may wish to get player permission beforehand. This is courtesy more then anything as unless your really just ambushed someone randomly with no RP commitment they will probably allow it. I have never seen a DM decline my evil characters the opportunity to render pain to an NPC.
