A long time ago, three years to be exact.

Haven't been back since, intended to get in on the action but... well life got in the way.

Anyway I'm going to try out the server in a bit, I usually play quiet, booky characters, magic-wielders typically.

I'm curious about one thing a rule in particular which... doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

What is this Three By 20-- thing?

I don't get why I can't run a pure sorc/wizard, doesn't this sort of enforce IC nonsense on your characters?

I mean, if I wanted to play a socially awkward Wizard, (a stereotype I know, stick with me here) why would he be anything else except magically inclined? How did he attain all these other skills if he spends most of his time studying by himself?

You don't have to have 3 classes by the level 20, if you multiclass, however, you have to have at least 3 levels in each class that you have, by by 20.

You can play pure classes all day long, also, howdy!

basically it stops some powerbuilds by requiring that you have the 3 levels in each class by level 20 so feat heavy classes can be difficult to fit in, especially if you are trying for two classes that have separate feat/skill requirements.

So basically no taking a new class in epic levels (or any level past 18). If you are found to break the 3x20 rule a DM will de-level you to where you are compliant with no re-level so it is important to plan accordingly. However, since you are looking to build a 'pure' wizard with no other classes or PRC's you will not need to worry over this.

I can still do my otherwise pure sorc with 3 levels of ranger then? Or... would I have to have another class along with it.

you can do Sorc 27 / R 3 no problem. just make sure the Ranger has all three levels by the time you reach level 20 (i.e. at 20 you need to be S17/R3)

It's debatable. 3by30 (as opposed to 3by20) has been argued for in the past, but people seem to be set on making the leveling experience annoying. The end result is essentially the same, though.

The 3b20 rule means that if you take other classes, you must have three levels in each new class by 20. But you are not required to take other classes.

If you want to do full, 30 levels of pure sorcerer, then you can certainly do that. You don't have to take multiple classes. 3b20 is about levels, not classes.

agreed, though 3b20 certainly serves to make Hierophant improve upon caster focused clerics/druids as opposed to melee focused as experienced when M3ntalist attempted to powerbuild melee powerhouses exploiting the class. He continued to end up with illegal builds because 3b20 limits what PC's can do since the requirements for Hierophant are so steep caster level wise. Obviously this is a new class, and I am not saying there aren't other ways to create limitations. I wasn't here in the beginning when the rule was implemented, but I do think there are some inherent issues with changing it now, since some builds would become weaker than they would be under new rules and perhaps other, legal builds would become illegal (not by changing to 3b30, but if some other change were implemented). In any case I doubt such a discussion would be beneficial to the original poster, sorry for the dissertation.
