Having "fun" yet?

Unread post by Snarfy »

I'm asking other players this question because I'm curious as to the overall sense of how much everyone is currently enjoying their time here. While my curiosity is centered around the recent changes made to the server, I'm also interested to hear how players have been finding things since the metaplot finale.

Since I can't make a poll here in the General forums, I figured I'd ask a few simple questions, and give players an outlet to either sing praises or rant maniacally. After all, having fun on the server is perhaps the most important aspect of why we play here, so:

Are you having fun?
If so, how?
If not, why not?
What do you like/dislike about the update?
On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you currently rate things on the personal fun-o-meter?

Hopefully this doesn't degrade into any unnecessary flamefests, but I feel like these questions need to be asked.

Still, don't be shy, brutal honesty can be cathartic! :? In any case, I'll go first.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Am I having fun?
Occasionally. Things weren't exactly over-the-moon fun for me even before the update, maybe a smidge less now.

If so, how?
Trying out new content and classes is always interesting. I re-rolled my OOBI alt into a cavestalker... he's a total gimp comparatively, but still sort of fun

If not, why not? I was having a hard time finding RP before the update. Less familiar faces now = less RP = less fun. I also don't know how/if a lot of things on my slew of characters work, or are intended to work. Trying to figure all that out is also detracting from my time to find RP. I'm also spending too much time on this damn forum and not enough time IG.

What do you like/dislike about the update?:

Likes: The new sneaking vfx, the new areas, the appearance of some of the spell changes(like bigbys). The animations of some of the new skills(lunge, pommelstrike). I also like that lizard-folk in the cloakwood have seemingly been facerolled into extinction. See what happens when you grind people?!(Those poor talsoi picked the wrong neighborhood to move into). The Ogrillion(yes, there's one IG now).

Dislikes: The(perceived) general angst, and the number of sad-panda players who are frustrated at finding their main characters so drastically changed. The disguise feature. The mechanical changes to some of the new spells(like bigbys, and bards C&C), as well as the wonkiness that accompanies using those new skills(lunge, pommel strike). Encountering less RP. Watching the small army of new characters zinging around the server like angry hornets as they try and figure out their characters and the new mechanics. The idea of RcR'ing just to take skills or new feats that may not function properly, or even affect things one way or another(escape artist).

On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you currently rate things on the personal fun-o-meter? .... 3 or 4, tops. Although, it's been hovering at a steady 3 or 4 since the metaplot ended.

Are you having fun?

Reasonably, yes. Occasionally I am a little bummed out, and some certain decisions, fourm posts, and statements do irritate me.

If so, how?

The new update certainly worked well to breath new life into the server, after a stagnant period with regard to content. I also enjoy RPing with the majority of people who are on, so, all seems well on the mechanics (now with the update) and on the RP front.

If not, why not?

There are a few decisions that bug me, when I find out about them. And a few players that are idiots. Other than that, all is well enough.

What do you like/dislike about the update?:

I like nearly everything, content-wise. There are a few bugs that I don't like, but, those will be ironed out in time. Launches always have bugs, no matter what. Bugs will be fixed, hiccups will be ironed out. Eventually, people will be used to the new updates, and everything will go on. Any sort of change always ruffles a few feathers at first.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you currently rate things on the personal fun-o-meter?

I'd rate it at a 7.5.

Though I've been a forum member since 2011 I'm quite new in game. a few months last year and a few months this year play time. my fun has gone away lately! After reading threads about fighters being so underdogged here i chose to RCR my main, Boris, from pure fighter/TK to a rogue dipped weapon master with UMD and TK. It just feels OOC and i think that's stolen enjoyment for me. I alsp feel overwhelmed by all the new content, having just begun to get my head around things the way they were. my fun atm is a 3. I log in, sigh and log out to play a different game last night. would really like to double RCR my main back to the way he was. though remain discouraged that fighters are a pointless pursuit if what I've read ia true. (Never been beyond lvl17). Thanks for reading.

Don't listen to the various forum posts, Boris. Play what you want to play. Powerbuilds by their nature take away from the enjoyment of building a character, since you stop building for the character. I'd RCR back to your original build, and stick with it!

Besides, Boris is a Thayan Knight. It doesn't matter if he's less effective in solo, he's supposed to be working alongside wizards as his main occupation! They should be buffing him, which makes him very powerful. The problem with all these powerbuilding complaints is that they're always based around soloing everything. Fighters and casters are supposed to support each other, DnD was built as a party-based game.

There's also no real need to get to 30 as fast as possible, I largely stopped grinding once I hit 21 and have just focused on RP since then. I'll get to 30 eventually, I don't see any need to hit it right away.

Play what you want to play, don't worry about anything else. These forums are frankly far too toxic, as it is.

Am I having fun?
I always have fun.

If so, how?
Because I can make things fun or otherwise find fun in things that aren't fun. YOU CAN'T STOP ME FROM HAVING FUN.

If not, why not?
If I'm not having fun it's usually cuz I'm too lazy to make things fun and just want to chill. #couchpotato

What do you like/dislike about the update?

Likes:
Areas! New classes. Disguise system? (it needs tweaks) Some of the new spells (about a third of them are neat). I like seeing some of the QC guys posting in public threads explaining new mechanics. 100% RCRs WOO!!

Dislikes:
Escape artist. People having clearly ooc fun with new mechanics. Trolly posts in threads lately. How since casters got new toys people think fighter builds are terrible.

Yes.

If so, how?
By RPing and getting involved in character stories and the metaplot.

If not, why not?
The least fun I have is when reading the negativity on these forums.

What do you like/dislike about the update?
I like the new summon system. I like the new spells (especially the mass call spells, and whirlwind). I like the ability to turn off individual spells, and to turn off illumination on items. I love the new skills.

I dislike the Disguise renaming function. I dislike the bugs (especially my summons not transitioning). I dislike the obstruction gimmick. I dislike the ranting on the forums, especially when I see it discouraging people from having fun and building for their character, as above.

Am I having fun?
For the most part, yes.

If so, how?
Rather the opposite of Snarfy, I don't think less familiar faces means less fun. It means you'll have new RP opportunities and new people to get to know. After all, that was true when we all started playing here, was it not?

I enjoy the RP I am involved in. I think the DM team is better now than it was, say, two years ago. Vastly so. They're providing interesting RP opportunities and possibilities without having to make them epic or cataclysmic.

I'm having a lot of good RP interactions with many people on the server through Candlekeep RP and also through the White Mask Theater RP (though not as much as I'd like on the latter).

If not, why not?
Well, the endless whining about mechanics on the forums is distracting a lot from the fun of RP. It spreads in game in OOC remarks as well.

What do you like/dislike about the update?:
Likes:
- Dispel now works as it is supposed to. One can argue that there are too many dispels going on in PvE (and I do! Far too many!), but at least the mechanic now is appropriate.
- New Sending mechanic! Now it will be more clunky to have a conversation with Sending. This is good! I can only hope this is a start of something more. PnP says 10 minutes cast time, and there's a reason why they've set it to 25 word limit. Sending isn't supposed to be a means of conversation. It's a means of sending and receiving short, very important messages.
- Lore skills. Finally people with 33 ranks in lore won't be able to be experts in both the planes, architecture and religion. That would now require 99 ranks.
- Area expansion. This can also be a bad thing, mind. More areas means people will spread out even more. But I think it enriches the server even so.

Dislikes:
- The disguise system. It worries me greatly.
- The weird extra AB penalties in combat. They really, really have to go. This game is already clunky enough to move around in. Introducing position/movement based penalties is just a middle finger to everyone.
- The bugs. It's an almost staggering amount of bugs.
- The changes to Amplify and C/C. I'd rather have them be programmed more in line with PnP than this way. As I said in the QC thread about them, Amplify should decrease move silently for everyone inside a certain stationary radius. C/C is a low-level scrying spell that you target on an area (for instance, one could program it to target a teleport rune and the caster would be able to see or hear everything at the location of that rune for the duration of the spell).

Are you having fun?
Yes of course.

If so, how?
Finding different ways of RPing my PC, then improving on it. Creating goals for my PC, whether achievable or not. Promoting others RP more than my own to ensure other players have a great time as well. Chatting with the people here that have become close acquaintances, if not friends.

If not, why not?
All the people crying on the forums can be a bit of a drag. Sometimes meeting PC's IG that do not respect the setting is a bummer at times as well.

What do you like/dislike about the update?
I like:
-THE FACT THAT COMPLETE STRANGERS ARE TAKING THE TIME OUT OF THEIR LIVES TO ENRICH THIS GAME WORLD FOR US TO ENJOY.
-The new classes, deity domain shuffle, new spells and revamped summons. Man, it's awesome :)
-100% RCR...but who doesn't? ;)
-The extremely patient and helpful DMs that take the time to help a mechanics idiot like me!

I dislike:
-The ungratefulness and negativity that comes off from the forums

Are you having fun?
Depends on the day really. Depends if I can find others who are into intermixing human psychology and heavy combat scenes into their RP. I also just want to find something different... that surprises me. Sometimes I have a ten-rated day followed by a one-rated day. There is no middle ground with me (*points at his chaotic alignment*). Um, I am having fun with DM/Guild-interaction moreso than random meeting adventurers on the road, which is interesting considering historically I have had the most fun through random meetings outside of DM/guild-encompassing RP. When DMs take the time to focus on each individual character in the party it really draws me in more.

What do you like/dislike about the update?
I appreciate all the skills added; but I don't think we get enough skill points! Much like eating pizza, I can't just have a few, rather indulge on the whole greasy, succulent box (then I punish myself with eating cereal, chicken, and salad the rest of the week)! Swerving this back on subject, I'll shine a light on an example from the NWN2 server Myths of Atalan which starts the Fighter class off with 7 skill points. I'd be enthused to see that here. I dislike the disguise class' implementation as I went through a lot of frustration (and fun) with disguising and playing the whole James Bond route... I just don't want anyone else to go through the OOC headaches I did. I have a bone with the CL bug fix, and am glad a full arsenal of spells can now be played with. Deciding which spells to be faithful to, and which spells to give the shaft is always a nail-biting thing for sorcerers, so I am unburdened they have to suffer through that and not I. :P

On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you currently rate things on the personal fun-o-meter?
I will point at the answer given in the first question.

If not, why not?
If I am not having fun its either my own fault for declining in creativity and tongue-and-cheek dialog which I am fiercely known for :P, or because of something external outside of my control. Reading the forums can be entertaining, however, in mechanical discussions egos flare up and it doesn't really feel like advice is being given to help, rather to show-off technical knowledge. Especially since there are new players who gravitate towards asking mechanical-based questions and anything you say can offend them enough to turn their back on this life-and-death PW! I also wish there was a general consensus provided to us through an official Topic stating whether we can get these updates rolled-back or not. In spite of all the new, flashy features some of us are moderately chagrined about the extent of how altered it all is and our opinions aside, it makes for a better community when everyone can become embroiled in a voting process, and provided information. It is a sorry fact that information can be the sharpest sword. (Ah hell, my british accent came back!) We all get frustrated but I still think at the end of the day, if not all of us get along, we should ask ourselves what we've done wrong... to send a negative message and we should also realize not everyone has to like you. But I still think that shouldn't affect IC choices and consequences.

Been poking around again lately but this cover system is the biggest buzz kill ever. I'll check back in a year, hopefully it gets removed by then.

Am I having fun?
Totally. I always play characters that give me a sense of purpose in playing on BG in particular, and for myself in general. So when I log on, it is great fun to see the story unfold.

If so, how?
I just started a whole new storyline that is on the path to involve a handful of players, PCs, maybe a few guilds. It might take a year or longer for it to achieve any amount of success, but that slow burn storyline is just the stuff I love about role-playing. And every time I find those Players online that I am working with and sharing RP with, I feel lucky.

If not, why not?
When those Players are instead doing OOC stuff, forum posts, or RCRing (looks at Snarfy!!!).

What do you like/dislike about the update?:

Likes:
What I like most about the Update is that updates and content are finally coming online. Some content I've personally been waiting on FOR YEARS got uploaded, so there is that. Actually, I have far too much going on with my Character and the RP to really bother looking at what is new in the update, beyond some meta changes.

Dislikes:
Disguise System. Terrain/Combat attack minuses, or whatever the hell is happening—just feels like penalties, nothing more. I am a little bummed that a CR of 25 is not good enough. I worry that on some things, the Devs and QC are being too careful, and on others, new content has come online WITHOUT enough care. This is something I feel deeply personal about, because when I was DM Novus, I really made an extra effort to keep QC on track and empowered (as well, keep the Devs happy...as much as I could).

On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you currently rate things on the personal fun-o-meter?
9. I can do my own thing and be stoked to have a few hours of computer game play to relax me from a hectic RL. Or, I can get into a fun RP situation with another Player, no matter who, really, and just enjoy what comes out.

What would make it a 10 is if my storylines actually empower others in their RP, as well. Always a challenge! :D

Interesting responses. I'm actually slightly relieved that so many are enjoying things since the updates!

What I find curious, though, is how put off some of those who replied are by the complaints about the mechanics.

Personally speaking, I find that the complaints surrounding the mechanics are, more or less, rather justified. I say this because a fair number of those who are upset about the changes are long time players(and quite a few not so long time players as well) who have been playing their characters for a long time. Even years in some cases.

I can only speak for myself here, but I find the introduction of sweeping mechanical changes on a server that is supposed to be a role-play one to be a bit of a contradiction in terms. There are a great number of players(myself included) who have never felt the need for optimizing their builds to play here because, and I quote this for truth...
Rhifox wrote:Powerbuilds by their nature take away from the enjoyment of building a character, since you stop building for the character.
When defining and creating your "character concept" takes a back seat to optimization and survivability, something of that concept is lost. Now we've seemingly been thrust into a vastly different mechanical system, and in some ways it forces players to second guess the concepts they've been adhering to for so long. It also, in some cases, forces them to sacrifice their concept as a means to stay mechanically viable. This, I imagine, is why some players are so upset. And rightly so.

100% xp RcR's are all fine and well, but is this really promoting players to fine tune their character concepts? I would hazard a guess and say that most players are RcR'ing purely out of a desire to either A: try out new things, or B. mechanically optimize and compensate for the huge mechanical shift that's taken place.

How all these mechanical changes benefit the overall roleplay value of the server? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Personally speaking, I've decided not to RcR. If my main character concept gets diluted and made impotent by mechanical changes to the server to the point where he becomes unplayable(and, let me tell you, the "usefulness" of all those wands my rogue has sure is a kick in the...) then, honestly, and no offence to anyone who chose to RcR-optimize, I'll probably just pack it in. And I doubt I'm alone in this line of thought. ;)
