FS questions

Unread post by Darksol »

Hello peeps, a couple of questions concerning FS and the new update. I am probably asking extremely basic things but, in my defense, I did spent time trying to figure them out myself, it's just that I am not 100% sure.

I was planning to make a 26-27 FS combined with BG,Cleric or Pala. Very typical setup. Mainly in an effort to have a strong character that can solo, so that I will counter the frustration I get from my non-cheese other builds:)

1) I am not sure I get the CL mechanics on resisting dispels, so please enlighten me.
A 26 FS with practiced spell caster will get 30 CL, so he gets 11 + 30 = 41 and that has to stand against the caster who rolls 1d20 + CL + ability mod? What is the average CL of mobs? And does that mean that a player wizard casting dispel will roll an amazing 1d20 + 30 CL + 6-8 int = 37 - 58 range??

2) What is the CL that I need to get in order to not get dispelled often? And I am not worried just for epic levels, I want to have am ok char from lvl 10 and up, so that I will be able to explore when I cant find a group and enjoy the game.

3) My DC pre-epic will be 10 + WIS + spell lvl? And since my wis will be terrible (6-8), how does this affect me? Is this affecting only my offensive spells? or also my buffs?
And if I get epic vampiric feast will it suck? Or is it nonsense in a melee FS build to look at epic spells anyway?

4)I want to avoid both Pala and BG if possible, for RP reasons. Where does a FS/Cleric build falls short? Will it be ok or should I look for something different?

5) I counted the feats a FS get from 21 to 27 to be 7, but I see some builds with 8. Which is the correct number?

Thanks for the help :)

Well in regards to your dispell question, the DC is simply 11+ CL, and an epic wizard will only roll 1d20 + CL, no ability mod added, the same is true for all other dispellers as well.

1. Boddynock answered this nicely.

2. The higher your CL the better. However, even if your CL = your character level, you will still be dispelled by even level mobs until you hit the +20 cap from greater dispel. So the farther away from 20 you get, the less you will have a chance to be dispelled. Once you are 30, if you have a 30 CL, you won't be dispelled at all with a Greater Dispel. Mords is a different story since it doesn't have the 20 cap. However, most bosses that cast it don't have the caster levels to wipe everything. It's mainly just a 6 spell breach at that point. (Which for FS means you will lose shield of faith and any energy immunities you have up)

3. Lose wisdom will not affect your buffs. Just the DC of your offensive spells. Not sure on the use of vampiric feast with a low DC. It does get a +5 for being an epic spell.

4. The main thing you will be missing by not taking BG/paladin is the cha bonus to saves. FS has such great saves that you probably won't need that boost. But taking a cleric dip gives you access to divine feats (divine might/EDM) as well as domain abilities/feats. You could pick up evasion with the water domain or any number of other feats. You'd also save having to pick up cleave for BG.

5. No idea. You should have your 5 regular epic feats plus 2 bonus feats for epic FS. So I count 7 total. It's possible they could have fighter or divine champion or something that gives an extra feat and took it in the epic levels.

couple additions...

- Vamp Feast will still have a really low DC so expect most bosses or mobs you'd use it on to save (i.e. only plan for what happens if the enemy makes their save, anything else being a bonus).

- From an RP standpoint, just remember Vamp Feast is an evil spell, so if you are seen using it, their could be consequences.

- Cleric will have -1 AB compared to Pal / BG (not a big deal when casting Divine Power) and no CHA to saves. While FS saves are still good, that extra 5 or so is never a bad thing. Cleric will gain you domains (make sure to pick from your selected deities list of allowed domains) and could give you a couple 1st and 2nd level spells to save on your selections for FS... Such as Protection from evil and other long duration spells that can be re-applied if dispelled. However, this is only possible if you have higher WIS (11 for 1st level spells, 12 for 2nd). I think it will be worth it to put WIS 9 so you can use a +3 item to cast those cleric spells. This is, of course a minor benefit, but it does give you a bit more flexibility in your FS spell selection at least for the low levels.

- I would say it is just important to consider the RP implications of being Favored of the deity and cleric of that deity. Could make for some interesting self conflict / doubt, especially since often FS doesn't know they are favored of a specific deity. :D
