A strange connection issue
Hello guys
I am playing almost 5-6 months here but i always had a small problem that seems to have gotten far worse these days.
You see while i know my way arround pcs and comunications , i have , i always had a strange issue, that didn't stop me from playing but now it is.
When i first started on Octomber, every now and then ( like 3 days) i would get disconnected from the server ( if i was online) or i couldn't connect to the server and the problem always was that < Server is not responding ( timed out)> . Mostly i would ping -t from cmd the server to see if it's responding to me at all and i would always get a response.
I found out from just trying general troubleshooting methods that after a router reset(some times it would only router reset), and many times a pc restart( some times it would only need a pc restart) ( that's what makes it so hard to find the source of the problem) and many times both! i have kept a log of how many times it needed both
13% of the time it would need only a pc restart
27% of the time it would only need a router restart
and the rest 60% i would need to restart them both
( i really had that problem that many times that i wanted to find a pattern)
So after these restarts, the game would run just smoothly.3-4 days later the same problem. Wouldnt take me more than 3 mins to fix .
But the last 2 weeks.... it's the same thing all over again , but now for like 9 hours( or a given , long ammount of time)... i am starting to suspect that it never had to do with my router or my pc... maybe it is something i am totaly missing and i was reseting stuff like an idiot...
(edit: I have to add that , now i am pinging and i am never getting a response, all firewalls are down, the general game ports are forwarded)
I really don't know anymore and i really have limited time per week to play and the problem is eating almost half of my playtime....
Can anyone, please, help me?

Re: A strange connection issue
Seeing as none of the people who are actually skilled at these things has piped up yet I'll throw in my two cents.
First:
When you ping try to ping other servers (maybe google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 or http://www.example.com), if you don't get responses from anywhere you probably need to debug your own network. If you get responses from everything except the game server the problem is probably outside your network.
Second:
Try using tracert, which pings each server on the way to the destination and can often give you an idea if the problem lies outside your network or not.
I find a combination of those two manages to locate most problems for me. Hopefully one of the local tech gurus can offer better advice.

e.g tracert 23.229.0.132This works best if you've run it a few times before when things are working so you can compare the results.

Looks like the problem is outside your network to me.
I would guess the problem lies at a server around hop 12.
I would try nagging your ISP, sometimes if you whine enough they will change the routing .

Re: A strange connection issue
1. It looks slow before it gets to step 12.
2. I just tried from work and I also got timeouts at servermania and then again getting through to tycompetition
3. But I completed at step 19.
From the latter I would hazard that they are generic problems and are actually down to the server host and routes in. That he failed to connect is down the slow nature of the earlier steps.
My first 9 steps were all 1-3ms and that's pretty much how it should be. On his tracert the 8th step is crossing the Atlantic; the earlier steps should all be fast. I'd say that the problems are not with the route taken to get to BGTSCC, but in the steps preceding that. Even the first step, to the router, is slow.
Try running Speedtest. That should determine whether it's slow generally or not.

If i had so much ping in my general browsing i would had seen it, anyway the speedtest seems pretty normal with a ping return from my ISP server in 18ms... I can connect to Realms of trinity fine , and Sigil...
what in the evilness is going on here?! i can't connect from yesterday!

Re: A strange connection issue
Tracert appears to be no help here. Tried running one to Sigil and got similar behaviour.
Have you tried Direct Connect with 23.229.0.132:5121?

Re: A strange connection issue
Yeah i had many many times ( tried to connect with Direct Connect).
Well i connected to my university's VPN and i got assigned a new ip and it seems to have completely solved the problem.
I also tried from a laptop from my network and i couldnt connect. Seems It's a network problem.
Thanks for all the help! If you wanna solve the mystery i would be glad!

I'm not surprised by where the fault lay, but no idea what's causing it. Does your ISP have support forums? It seems unlikely that someone else won't have suffered similar issues.

Re: A strange connection issue
I am sorry for rezzing this post, but for people who might need any help with a similar issue,
I solved the issue ( the one i originaly posted some months back) with going on my router and disconnecting from my ISP, then i reconected, i received the same ip and i connected normaly.
Lists of things i tried but failled,
restarting pc!
restarting router,
dns flush,
simplednscrypt,
extension client,
normal client,
clean install of both nwn2 and bgtscc files,
vpn,
all ports were forwarded for nwn and our server ( i think this doesnt matter anymore)
and maybe some other stuff!
Anyway if you are having the same problem and tried those stuff aswell, try my solution. I hope you will fix it and once again be able to play this sensation.

Re: A strange connection issue
I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue, though it sounds like you went through quite a lot of different hoops along the way!
Fingers crossed we don't have as many connection issues with the new host later this month.

Re: A strange connection issue
Not a problem at the BGTSCC end. Now that the solution has been posted I recall having something similar years ago, which was down to the particular piece of kit I had. Hopefully this was just a one-off and not indicative of a general flaw with that particular router.

Re: A strange connection issue
Hmm, i just checked mine and have a similar bad tracert routing.
That would explain why i'm getting so much timeouts/lag lately.
But i'm at a complete loss how to improve it.
