Peter does actually have a reason for adventuring, though it hasn't really come up in character. It's probably pretty obvious.
He's motivated to be an adventurer because he wants to be exciting to impress Holly. Being a boring farmer wasn't cutting it.
He hopes to survive long enough to amass a sizable fortune, purchase an estate and to retire in luxury.
He plans to propose once he manages to attain a sufficiently impressive magic ring.

We reunited with Holly, who is now carrying some secret the rest of us are completely oblivious to. Perhaps we go back for Gonn next weekend, or maybe he escaped already?

I think it's best to treat Gonn as being permadead.

From my PoV that was 100% railroading and I don't like that style.
