Background: Much of Lazarus' personal history has been forgotten as he forsakes his own personality in pursuit of the art of his people. His memories of childhood are dark, literally and figuratively. He was born underground in an enclave of Imaskari wizards who, in covenant with one another, explored the Underdark in search of tomes and relics for their libraries. Eventually, infighting among the senior members of the enclave fractured their community into factions. Divided, hostilities erupted in the manner typical among wizards - explosively. By this time Lazarus was a young man. He left the feuding enclave and braved the perils of the Underdark alone.

The memories of this time are cruel and few, vague like dreams. Many perils and captivities Lazarus endured at the hands of duergar, drow and even illithid. Eventually he came as a vagabond into a coven of deep gnomes who had a rare mercy on the human and allowed him to lodge among them for a time. Lazarus overstayed the agreed duration of his stay - but he was so withdrawn in his studies that the gnomes easily tolerated him, and did not object to the presence of this Imaskari scholar who offered them aggressive arcane support whenever their home was threatened by other denizens of the deep.

An aging man, Lazarus longed for home - and curiosity asked what had become of the place, but especially its ancient libraries. He returned to the site of the Imaskari enclave, expecting ruins, but found it flourishing under the next generation. He abode with his people again for a time as one of few elders, forming a solid scholarly partnership with one of the other members - a conjurer by specialization - a man who summoned both devils and angels to glean what knowledge he may from these old creatures of ancient Imaskar, and who sought vehemently to return to the old ways and glory.

Eventually, other enclave members became infuriated with the degenerating behavior of Lazarus. Increasing paranoia of his colleagues causing a collapse of their society spurred the old wizard to surveillance of enclave residents by scrying. He became obsessed with the monitoring of relationships between the arcanists, becoming very unwell physically for neglect of his body and, for some years, was out of mind.

The patience of the wizards drew thin after years and hostilities began to simmer. Lazarus found his paranoia of a collapse of the society was now a paranoia in fear of his own life - this encouraged him to continue in his surveillance more and more. Only after an intervention from his colleague, Lazarus left the libraries behind at the advice of his comrade. He took all his research to the drow city of S'shamath to continue it there and has operated in long-distance co-operation with his only colleague, who has suggested joining him in the city to combine their research efforts once again.

Goals: Continue to research the historical fall of his people, and by pursuit of magic gain personal power and influence toward ends undisclosed here.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Lazarus has spent many years living through arcane divination. It became an addiction for him in times of deep paranoia to scry incessantly upon those many he perceived enemies and rivals. If not for the intervention of his colleague Lazarus may have expired through neglect of his bodily necessities. This time of immersion in divination magics has left Lazarus with a slightly warped sense of time, space and reality that causes him occasional difficulty. His incessant monitoring of others, particularly arcanists, has also earned him the ire of other mages who may still hold hostilities for Lazarus and take opportunities to confront him if he were ever found.
