I noticed however that appearances changes cannot happen if you are wearing an item above your level.

Years seems an exaggeration. Were mechanical changes actually necessary?

Years seems an exaggeration. Were mechanical changes actually necessary?
There was already mention of the need to stop having DMs deal with bugs related to the ILR when it bugs out and requires levels no PC can attain. As well as the fact that SR items were useless to PCs. Low level SR items were not usable in the dungeons where they would be most useful since the PC level would be too low to use the item and by the time they could the casters in the dungeon were too powerful for the SR item to work. So the answer to your question is YES mechanical changes were needed to give PCs the ability to use items at useful levels when a PC found them and this also clears up time DMs have to be spending on bugs and mechanical issues and can instead create stories which is what their real job is. I think at this point people need to realize not everything that changes on here will be brought through the general public. We do not own this server but merely are privileged to play on it. It seems to me many who are opposed to this change feel like they have a stake in this server beyond telling their story and that is interfering with reason for them as they do not own this place. It is a communal area where we all have agreed to play by the rules set forth by those who do have a stake in the server. IE those who actually have put their intellectual time into to actually shape it and shape it according to what is best for the server not a handful of nay sayers. This was a good change that allows people to use items like +4 AB and SR items. It allows them to change their appearances before level 10 and other nuances that were quite annoying to new and old PCs alike.

I wonder if this change isn't inspiring players to hold onto more of the items they find. I've been visiting the auction over the past week and there's far less of a selection than I'm used to seeing: usually the weapons, armor, and misc(belts, rings, etc) sections are full but currently those sections are at half capacity, and what is available is decidedly lacking in quality.

I suppose it's possible that people are looting less as well, but either way, it's making for slim pickings for those who favor the auction over running dungeons for loot.

It is because the auction isn't as safe as it was. Read the disclaimer, Snarfy? Maybe it was never safe, in the first place.

that disclaimer was put up months ago and left even after the auction became safe again. pretty sure it is perfectly safe now, unless there are examples of issues having occurred recently?

Or use an insta-kill spell on them, at lv 1 they wont be making any saves against it and succeeding.

A bit late maybe, but for me this change has several advantages:

It brings characters across levels closer to each other. Well, for some it's not going to change much, but its a little bit at least. This is mostly to the advantage of the DMs when making events, making it easier to balance the opposition.

It turns down the cost of quite a bit of equipment on the player market, so those who don't feel that big of a change from above have an easier time to catch up, up to a point.

Traditionally, the staff has had an item reward policy that hasn't been entirely fair. The policy has been to reward people with items that they can actually use. So, epics would get epic rewards, while lowlevels would not. This change changes that.

There are some other things, but its been listed and these were the main reasons I throught it was a good idea on QC. I don't see a real downside to it.

The downside is that low levels will no longer have a challenge. And low levels are the best part of the game IMO.

So true, so true. :(

And how will the CRs for newly build areas be calculated nowadays ?
Is it a CRx area for a LEVELx character with or without epic gear ?

Most likely the areas will stay the same. If you want to put on epic gear and lose the challenge you can do that. Else dont and enjoy the challenge.

You actually think people have self-control, or masochistic tendencies?!?

If that was the case, then the whole "broken" classes thread wouldn't exist.

@Karond: D&D was not designed to have both level 1 and Level 30 adventuring together. Modules, man-o, modules! Look it up, if you don't know. The mechanics of NWN2 don't even support larger variances of 5 levels!
