"That edge..."

Unread post by Steve »

Food for thought:

"Tibia, one of the oldest MMOs on the internet, launched in 1997. Nearly 20 years later, people are still actively playing it. As of this writing, there are 12,701 people playing Tibia. It's never been a game for the timid; Tibia is a hardcore online RPG, one that regularly kicks players in the teeth. When you die, the game docks a percentage of experience from your character, potentially rolling back real-world days worth of progress. That edge is what keeps people coming back."

As someone that regularly plays such hardcore MMOs (EVE Online presently, EverQuest's PvP server back in the Kunark days), it takes a bit more than just having the game stomp all over you to make it interesting. One of those being mechanics that allow you to reliability determine just why you died and how to prevent that from happening in the future. A game in which deaths are random, come from bugs, crashes, and other uncontrollable avenues, and where the biggest thing to determine whether you succeed are decisions you made at character creation and that cannot be changed later on, is not the sort of game where there will be much fun, as your emotional investment will be one of frustration and powerlessness instead of exhilaration and agency.

It also helps if the actual gameplay is fun. Though the social atmosphere is the most important part.

I played Ultima Online a long time for the same reason. You die, you lose everything on your body.

That was the sh*t.

Here our edge is immortality! You can never escape life. Despite dyeing valiantly against some foe...or otherwise..to have your passing mourned by your former compatriots. ... you end up supermanning your way back to life from a few days to a few years.

It's hardcore! O.O

And oh alas... most times you get to keep your old stuff too! :(

Alas. Tis a burden for sure! I mean. I've been here since 2009. And I'm still cought in the endless loop! Why cannot I die! T.T

Absolute certainty is not a game, imho.

Balanced risk versus reward, achievement and consequence...now that's where it's at.

Anyway, it's interesting to read that even in a somewhat infinite game experience, the challenge to overcome the near impossible is attempted...and both questioned. I like the mystery in it.

I managed to die. Just do something you're not supposed to do.
