I think it can be encapsulated in the following philosophy:

"The ends justify the means."

That's the philosophy of evil or neutral, not good.

Chaotic good is..

"The present is what matters. Apply laws as they serve to protect, ignore them if they hinder life or its liberty. Traditions are only there to avoid old mistakes, not to quell liberty."

In short: "Liberty of all and lives to live" - that's chaotic good.

A character belongs only to their player, and only them. And only the player may decide what happens.

A combination of "I do what I want" and wanting to help others. While a paladin might tell an orc he will burn in hell for his crimes unless he repents, a chaotic good character might slap the paladin in the back of the head and simply hug the orc. Of course the chaotic good character might stab the orc while hugging him just to be sure.

Alturistic and selfless.

Anti-authority, as a concept. Dislike of rigid hierarchies and rules, for instance. Especially when they prevent good, and at the same time highly suspicious of hierarchy and rules that claim to be the best for the common good.

Little care for classical honour. An idea that evil people don't necessarily deserve a fair fight.

Robin Hood is often suggested as a classical example of Chaotic Good.

I like thinking of references. Such as Robin Hood. A classic chaotic character.

But CG is a selfish approach to a world governed by laws for the betterment of all. You can be a good person and a selfish creature.

Vigilantism is another CG trait. Which also is another side of selfishness. A disregard for the whole for a personal idea or vendetta.

CG is also against the idea of the common good and much more focused on the idea of personal freedom.

Some argue CG lacks personal displine. As it is much easier to follow your own rules then someone else's. Also no one gets surprised when you change your own rules. As you only answer to your self and not an authority.

Some thoughts.

Chaotic good is the peasant who hunts game and chops down trees in the king's forest to fill the larders and warm the houses of the impoverished in his village, even though it is traditionally unlawful and carries the penalty of death. He is caught in the act and escapes with his life, but loses everything. Yet he has no regrets. Ostracized in the kingdom he becomes a wanted outlaw. When the greed of the same king is crushing the poor with exorbitant taxes the peasant begins robbing the taxman's caravans and restoring the money to the downtrodden.

Chaotic good is the warrior servant of a recently restored king who is charged to find the hiding place of the sons of the usurper. Expecting to discover a hideout of armed men he is surprised by what he finds. Children. Despite the direct orders of the king he cannot bring himself to kill them. Though he knows that children become men, and these may return in later life under the mantle of their father and contend against the rightful king for the throne, the soldier determines to let them go. His fellow NE soldier, a ready traitor, wrongly perceives the CG soldier as wanting to gain advantage with the enemy king by sparing these sons. Slavery is common and acceptable in his land, so he suggests that the soldier kill slave children in their place and thereby please everyone. The CG refuses, preferring to risk the anger of their ruler over taking the blood of any children, slave or free, on his conscience.

A chaotic good characters life is a pattern of acting as dictated by a good conscience with no regard for moralistic legalism or codes of conduct. The have counted the penalties and consequences of clashing with culture and authority as nothing compared to doing what is right.
