Unless I'm mistaken the goal of the idea is to actually bridge the gap a bit between looters and non-looters. Raising the merchant prices does exactly the contrary, looters don't need help, they're doing fine gold wise !

Truth and one of the points discussed when we were talking about implementing the epic shop. This shop should give us time to try(?) andfix the problem we had before "Gold gas no value". So if anything, we should start reducing the merchant buyout :D

However, currently gold has value. Epic items are sold for gold in the forums, where before that would be unheard of. Their prices dropped to half even. This shop, wherever the hell ( see what i did there :P ) it is, has solved many problems in one go.

Of course, like i mentioned many times before, one desicion cannot satisfy everyone... but life goes on...

Well it is important to note that the epic shop is most probably a short term gold sink unless other changes occur. At some point players will have their +4 dodge boots with extra's, their +4 natural armor item, their +4 deflection item, their favorite armor, weapon, etc. etc. and then because we have no rules against muling, any future characters of the PC will be able to trade/sell gear to make a decent portion of the cost back, thus being able to switch to new gear when they change PC's.

edit: many other posts while I was typing, so above is just as was mentioned by Valefort and others...

Point being, I didn't say I was 'for' any of those things, just that I would prefer them over gold appearing the way RP XP does once lvl 30 is reached. My opinion is that any change should be approached with an abundance of caution since I view gold having value as a GOOD thing! For starters I wouldn't be opposed to Calodan's idea of gold/kill being awarded without the need to pick up loot bags, but I would make the amount very small (like 10 gp / kill) since some players may kill 100's of enemies while XP grinding. Also, I see a bit of an issue in that when in parties, the tank will likely get fewer kills, as perhaps will a controller. So the heavy hitters gain gold and xp while the others are only getting the xp. Personally my 'favorite' option so far would be to increase the max sell price of items to 2,000 gold. That may seem like not a very big change to some, but again, any change I feel should be approached with an abundance of caution. 2,000 gold equates to a 67.5% increase over the current max of 1,350 you get from Thunderhammer. Any higher increase than that I feel could cause the ~10-20,000 gold you can make in an hour or two in a group looting areas and selling to vendors become far too high. Even at 2,000 you could theoretically make over 50,000 gold in just selling some +1/+2 / low end vendor items with a decent Appraise score. Do we want it to essentially take 5 or 6 loot runs to be able to afford + 4 dodge boots, for instance?

So again, I am open to the discussion, but I do think some care is needed. Running just Cloakwood/Chaos/Lion's Way run has ~40 chests and or lootable corpses and can be ran in well under an hour. While you will have times where such a run nets you less than 10K gold, you will also occasionally nab some +3/+4 items or other greater (even epic if you are very lucky) drops. So it even's out. I just want to be careful that we undo what has been done in regard to making gold have value.

edit: as stated by others, even 2,000 gold may be too much, which is why I say any change at all should require a great deal of consideration and discussion. (making this a very good topic!)

Honestly I use to grind a lot, now I'm starting to swing to more RP or the occasional grind on a low level toon.

I really wouldn't like the merchant cap increased.. I'd rather see gold piles drop more. Shoot if you doubled the gold from chests and gold piles it would have the same result and not make every level 2 with a SR item instantly rich.

I don't like the original idea.. But I do.. I think it would be neat to get a little gold here and there, but rather I'd think it an easy way to make money instead of actually having to seek it out. If you prefer RP, seek adventure RP! If you want to sit in a tavern, make an appraiser who sits in taverns and gabs all day.

I wouldn't be opposed to making appraisal directly effect the cap which you could sell an item for.

mrm3ntalist wrote: Can you list the costs you have for when using consumables and teleporting then what you gain on your dungeon runs? That will help us understand the problem.
It's hard to say specifically from memory, it is mostly anecdotal without keeping exact costs, I can try to keep some records for future runs though! Also I don't teleport that much. Anyway Im not saying that with grinding enough you can't earn gold, it just seemed more that the gold problem Flasmix is talking about is having some "trickle" income, without having to grind. Which is a fair point really.

But reading flipside43s comment also seems familiar. I spend most my time ingame typing not clicking - building up stories, relationships and spreading rumors, but I really can't think of a way to reward those things with gold that don't require DM oversight like with character bios. Maybe gold for rp isn't a bad idea, if you can get your head around it mechanically appearing.

Also although I havent been to the epic store it seems to have really shaken the economic tree, lots of people actually having the ability to acquire gear and having new options open seems like a good thing even if it is only temporary.

As a side note though I always thought the comments about gold not having value were just the richest being uncreative so to you I address this message. Start a charity, kit out an alt, contact dms and area designers about funding something in game, create a guild and use IG reward to incentivise players - plenty of ways to use that gold to make waves in game, put a bounty on someone!

DMs are very limited on how much gold can be given out to players as rewards. It's not a lot at all.

Could always make the items from the epic store undroppable.

My idea turns the rp xp drip into a gold drip at level 30. If any chests are looted the gold drip is deactivated for an hour so the grinders can't double dip.

This idea came about after hearing multiple stories of long time players having almost no money. Thoughts?

Well, I would say Akroma and his clientele have been well served by not making them undroppable. There are builds that can't survive the trip or for IC reasons wouldn't go to the stores location and enterprising merchants (there are a few I've seen) have generated RP while providing a service to those characters that have the funds, but not the survivability to obtain the available gear. If the gear from the store can't be dropped/traded that RP and service industry goes away and I'm not sure that is the right direction to go.

This will punish people for not taking appraise. It's how some merchants make money by being a broker.

Based on the rate of returns in XP, the gold amounts would be insignificant. I see no problems here and it is a nice idea.

On another note, I would get behind gold drops for kills. I'd suggest doing it differently though. I'd make it only work in group and distribute it equally among party members. Low gold rewards here are the safest way to go and party requirements will promote social behavior.
