Food!

Unread post by NegInfinity »

It is actually a bit funny, but:

Most inns do not sell any food.
Also they do not have any non-alcoholic beverages. Not even water.
Also, it is not possible to eat fish you caught.

To my knowledge, there is a small number of food items on the server:
Aloe leaves
Apple
Cake
Bread(?)
Cheese.

And speaking of Beverages, there's:
Refreshing water.

Aand I think that's it.

So, apparently everybody on the coast encourages adventurers to get hammered but remain a vegetarian.

Would be nice to have those added to inns, at very least.

Farmer Thom in BG farmlands as well as the food merchant in Beregost also have impressive selections, and you can also get Chicken Soup, Apple Pie and Meri's Honey Cakes from the temple of Ilmater in BG.

In the DM chooser there are also things like Roast [insert meat type here] as well. Some of those roasted meats should be added to taverns, esp. the FAI.

I like this idea. Little things like that can really help.

The Rise of Sauron and Unfinished Tales (Middle Earth based NWN2 PWs) used a nice food crafting system using ingredients harvested/purchased. I think it was CNR with Charlie's UI, but not certain. Anyway, I've always thought it would do well here (and allows you to cook fish).

Either way though, I like the idea.

Yeah, CNR is a great system. I was involved in the revised weapons/armor crafting system on TRS/UT to make something a bit more reflective on how things are ACTUALLY made (Vanilla's "mold" system was just silly). The food crafting system left a LOT to be desired, tho, at least in terms of mechanical effects.

IE there was about a million ways to make Rations, one for a different type of meat. But they all gave the same effect. It WOULD have been better to just call them "rations" and accept any type of meat instead to cut down the number of recipes. It would have been cool to be able to make Chicken Soup that acted as a resist/cure disease potion, have a Beef Stew that provided Cold Resistance, etc. But certain people wanted to keep all food crafting strictly RP and not provide any real meaning to the mechanical effects.

I've personally always thought rations required to rest would be great thing. Having to make sure you are stocked on rations before adventuring makes total sense to me.

Food items are cool and all, but they tend to be far more expensive when they have special properties than anyone would realistically pay. The expensive fruit in game has no doubt driven many to a life of crime. The back alley kids just want to have something sweet once a month, but they need to rob a noble to afford it.

I'd like to suggest we have affordable food if we add anything new.

For my lowbies, I prefer drinking water and eating food to heal. It felt... better than using a healing kit or chugging bottle after bottle of healing potions (do we recycle? ). I just wish there were higher level equivalents of the food and water.

I would love it, if someone could make a food selection for the FAI... plain food, inexpensive and no properties would be great! Things like "Steak and Potatoes", Roast Beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, Fish and Chips, Salad, assorted deserts... etc. And of course sprinkle in the ones with properties that we already have.

The idea was to have RP items. Not necessarily "useful" consumables or anything.

As you said an apple costs whopping 200 goldpieces or something like that.

Because of this I propose to shift vendor's aligment one point towards evil every time someone buys an apple.
One pound of gold is worth 50 gold pieces.

At the very least it would be to have existing food added to inns, because right now the only option there is to get hammered. They don't even sell water. Only alcohol. I guess they really love to deal with drunk wizards.

To be fair, the society level most of DnD is based on (high/late-Medieval Europe) wouldn't drink water, anyway. People drank small beer (low/non-alcoholic beer) instead because water was unsafe to drink.

Granted, Medieval Europe didn't have access to magical means of obtaining clean, safe drinking water...

Either way, that wouldn't explain lack of food or dairy products.

Without a ready selection of clean protein and carbohydrate rich foods, how will our fighters and barbarians possibly achieve the calorie surplus to make the lean muscle gains required to slay dragons :-(
