Oh I see it now! Thanks for clearing that up!You're misreading it a bit, there's no addition to make there.
Let's say you have the feat favored power attack : Giants
If you go two-handed and use IPA against a giant you'll get +18 damage. Against any other monster you'll get the regular +12.
With FB and enhanced power attack you get +20 damage instead of +12 when using IPA when two-handing.
Now if you have a build that gets the enhanced power attack feat and you also have favored power attack : Giants .. you'll get +30 damage when using IPA two-handed against a giant.
So the idea is that if you want that huge damage modifier you have to pay for it and go FB 5 / ranger 25, for example

I gotta ask. Are those even useful for a 2H ranger?Akroma666 wrote:Updated original post for final submission for QC review:

Power attack has fairly straightforward requirements (strength), it comes with significant penalty to hit (-3 fo PA, -6 to IPA) and the point of ranger abilities was pretty much to get feats for which you would not qualify otherwise.
So, if I were thinking about 2h ranger, I'd expect something different. I don't know, maybe focus/specialization/whirlwind/improved whirlwind. Just getting a power attack would be quite... underwhelming? Another arguably useful ability would be disarm/improved disarm (which is useless against most monsters, but works well with a two-hander)
Not arguing against the idea, just trying to understand the logic.

Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
Archer rangers qualify for all the feats they get for free as they usually have very high DEX, false for PTWF ofc, but it shows a combat style is not to get feats you would not qualify otherwise.
Idea is to make a path for 2 handers to use favored power attack. I might be wrong but I think it's a pretty underused feat.
As I see it Rangers have to burn 3-4 feats to make use of IPA and favored power attack, while pumping STR as much as possible, that's a lot of feats when you often want protective ward, steadfast, extend spell and a couple of stealth feats to compensate for having low DEX.
With 6 ranger levels you would only get IPA, which would be indeed fairly underwhelming, the power comes from Favored power attack, which comes for free after (but you can also pick a few before).

Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
Would this force a ranger to use. 2h weapon in order to access the feats? If you went 1h/shield with this style chosen could you still use pa/ipa? Being able to use a shield would certainly expand a ranger's versatility. I might have gone this route with my ranger/cavestalker a few years back were this possible. You could probably have room for some of the shield bash feats.

The reason why i asked the question is because nothing about granting PA/IPA says "two-handed" to me.Valefort wrote: As I see it Rangers have to burn 3-4 feats to make use of IPA and favored power attack, while pumping STR as much as possible, that's a lot of feats when you often want protective ward, steadfast, extend spell and a couple of stealth feats to compensate for having low DEX.

They are useful. I took them all. So I 'd had 4 feats to take;)NegInfinity wrote:I gotta ask. Are those even useful for a 2H ranger?Akroma666 wrote:Updated original post for final submission for QC review:

But what about giving them a chosen two-handed weapon if possible.

Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
This is 2H style so you could take it and use a shield. Wouldn't matter. You could take it and duel wield, archery, or whatever.. Doesn't matter. Its just a fighting style.Wyatt wrote:Would this force a ranger to use. 2h weapon in order to access the feats? If you went 1h/shield with this style chosen could you still use pa/ipa? The reason it is underused is in PnP you take one feat and get the ability against ALL FE's (at least, that is what I've heard...Never played 3.x PnP to say for sure).... In either case it is frankly just not worth it to take Improved Favored Enemy and Favored Power Attack to gain a bonus against one enemy type (unless you plan to spend all of your time on the server against one enemy, I guess). IFE and FPA would totally be worth it if one feat applied to all FE's, but as it is you would have to burn 6 feats just to get one or the other on all of your FE's...Valefort wrote:Idea is to make a path for 2 handers to use favored power attack. Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
Someone suggested another alternative to me :
Favored power attack 1, Favored power attack 2, Favored power attack 3, Favored power attack 4.
Favored power attack 1, Favored power attack 2, Favored power attack 3, Favored power attack 4.

Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
If it is true that the favored power attack feats only affect one favored enemy then it would definitely be underwhelming for the 2h fighting style. It also would not scale well and would disincentivize taking ranger past a splash.

Re: Ranger 2H weapon style
I think whatever we do it needs to apply to ALL the FEs a Ranger gets. Maybe make a special Enhanced Power Attack and Supreme Power Attack specific to the 2H Ranger progression. I can see where the need to curb power comes with giving feats that are the same as a FB. However what ever we do needs to be viable and not just some watered down just to do it feat.If it is true that the favored power attack feats only affect one favored enemy then it would definitely be underwhelming for the 2h fighting style. Rewards pure rangers.. And gives some slight boost to cross class rangers.
