Mark Plant, teleportation and the UD

Unread post by maseoo »

Hi!

I was just wondering whether the Mark Plant and Tree Stride spells work in the Underdark?
I tried MP at several locations in the Darkwoods but was unable to find anything (a leaf) to "mark". I tried at other locations as well, but it hasn't worked yet.

Are there any such spots, and are these spells supposed to work in the UD? There are fungi and "trees" in the UD - Luurden and Sussur - and at least the last one sometimes grow leaves (besides being a living plant, which they all should be).

It does work. I used to have the same need/issue with my UD Druid, and Rasael made changes to the UD areas so one could Tree Stride.

However, and sad to say, I forgot exactly where those "hot spots" were. It seems strange that Darkwood is not supporting tree stride.

I found this. If should be working...IF you have Cavestalker PrC.

Nice!
Will try once I get Cavestalker levels, maybe those missing levels are the reason it's not working in the Darkwoods, or maybe the area has the wrong plant type. Will test it out. :)

I tried to test Tree Stride from within the Darkwoods District, and it returned the error in the Combat Log of:

"You sense that something in the vicinity of yourself is impeding your spell."

But, check it out:

The Darkwoods is about as tree-y as it gets in the UD. So, what I'm thinking is that the Area of Darkwoods—which seems to have been somewhat revamped recently—maybe does not have the right Tag for allowing for Tree Striding (or, something else I'm not aware of?!?).

Either way, can anyone confirm that Tree Stride is being successfully used in any Areas of the UD? And, if you didn't know, one needs Druid + Cavestalker PrC to make this work (and yes, I know, I know...maybe I'm the only idiot playing this split!  )

Cheers.

EDIT: I did see the Cavestalker Underdark Affinity feat apply, when my toon walked into the Darkwoods, so I know the possibility is there...however, the action related to those possibilities failed.

Cavestalker shouldn't be needed to use spells naturally provided by the class. At least, that's my opinion of it as the class details it allows feats to be used in the UD, not spells.

um, your problem may be more of the fact that you are in the city and teleporting should not be allowed in and out of the city at will...

Explain why it shouldn't, or is that just your opinion?

Or, are you neglecting to explain in good terms that Darkwoods is within the Mythal? And thus, what you could be helpful in saying is something along the lines of: "try Tree Stride in another Area like X."

I object to all of Darkwoods being in the Mythal as there are hostiles who can attack you in it.

Well, from this map, one can see that the Darkwoods IS WITHIN the city "limits," though, there are quite a few references out there about how certain beings can still teleport in and out of the City.

"The epic wards in Sshamath lock down the city in a continual dimensional anchor, redirect teleport spells cast by strangers, and cause paralyzing pain to anyone within a 1 mile radius who seriously thinks about attacking the city or its citizens".

Yes to Mark Plant working in the UD, but not even Mark Rune / Teleport should be working in the darkwoods hence the "You sense that something in the vicinity of yourself is impeding your spell." I guess.

As for the mobs that live outside the gate, I suppose the conclave doesn't think of the darkwoods inhabitants as citizens, although if you step outside the gate you are not within the city limits anyway?

Another quote for ref: "The near-complete absence of faerzress around the city makes Sshamath an easy destination for teleport spells. Teleporting into the city's cavern is and normally punishable by confiscation of magic items, though certain important people are permitted to teleport there without penalty"

As Steve's map shows all of Sshamath is contained in a single cavern, so I suppose the mob zones there outside the gate are just to represent the dangerous side of the Darkwoods, and add a low level map/cave for lowbie players, but there should be no teleporting into the Darkwoods just as the rest of the city, unless you have been deemed 'important' by the conclave.

It might also be possible for syndicates and nerfarious groups to bypass the wards at certain places. Its a system that needs to be maintained. Perhaps certain mages of the school of abjuration accept bribes to let the wards in the darkwood decay. Or perhaps they've built in a work-around and are selling access. :o
