Disguise System and PVP
I've never had such a strange PVP as tonight, and it was mostly like that for 2 reasons, I think.
1. two cultists, named simply "Cultist" initiated an event and a person I was following was hit hard by them. When I went to set to hostile to defend him, I could not. The option simply didn't exist.
2. I believed it was a DM event given the names, and so was really surprised to find that I couldn't attack them
Just putting it out there that this is something I've never encountered before and it was really strange for the overall PVP experience.

Re: Disguise System and PVP
Some more info:
-The two players were disguised, in this case. They both used the name "Cultist".
-DM Pun-Pun handled the situation (in-case they can provide more information).
It is my personal belief that the disguise system causes players to be unable to toggle players hostile. I will test this later, to confirm.

And, if true, should not be abused further to gain (unintended?) PvP advantage in situations such as kellendril's.metaquad4 wrote:It is my personal belief that the disguise system causes players to be unable to toggle players hostile. I will test this later, to confirm.
DMs might like to pick up a discussion ticket about this matter if they haven't already.

The opposing party -should- still be able to set hostile. It shouldn't be a huge deal. Haven't tested yet, I don't have access to my computer right now. I will this EST evening.

Should, but couldn't. I was unable to even though I tried multiple times, even after one of the two had directly attacked me and was knocked down by another PC. I am not sure why, but it didn't work as it should. It would be worth looking into. One of the "CUltists" set me to hostile, so eventually I could target him properly, but it was just odd.metaquad4 wrote:The opposing party -should- still be able to set hostile. the downfall of this is this sequencemetaquad4 wrote:The opposing party -should- still be able to set hostile. It shouldn't be a huge deal. Haven't tested yet, I don't have access to my computer right now. I will this EST evening.
Player A and Player B are fighting
Player C is friends of Player A -
Player C is in hips or hidden - so player B doesn't know Player C is there.
Player C pops out of hips/invisible ( most likely after a bunch of aoe effects have happen, which might hit them if they were hostile, this happens a lot)
Player C then Attacks Player B (quick toggle hostile, after hips/invis or during it)
So player Player B has no idea they are being attack, by Player C.
The Easiest solution within the pvp rules is make a button that hostiles all non party members within the confines of that area. After the Rp out is issued to all those in the area.
So all it would take is the push of one button to hostile those not in party.
This will help with the meta game headache of my example above.
Or modify of the Assist pvp rule, which cause more headaches then it solves,
Or admin the rule, that of you are hidden/invisable and have an intent on possible joining the "fray" you are required to hostile before the iniatile pvp conflict oryou must wait for the results of the conflict were concluded and issue new rp outs.
(the root of the problem is you do not always know if someone else is there or not) A one click hostile would help allieviate this if could be contain within one zone. Which could mostly likely be easily scripted

It was pretty much that, honestly, but it was not metagaming in any way, there was a valid RP reason for all of what happened. As one of the people directly affected, I am not complaining about the event itself. I'm simply trying to make sure the system works as it should.

Re: Disguise System and PVP
This still might be able to be effected with the players communicating and using the given tools. Though I'm not sure if the player list still has the original name of the disguised character.... if it does then the players can hopefully cooperate with OOC communication, local or in tells, to get everyone who needs to be hostiled set properly. Nihm recently met a cultist in Soubar and was toggled hostile when the RP was getting tense, which is completely acceptable, appreciated and should be the standard practice; hostile first and let the RP flow. It ended up being some very fun RP as well, so don't assume toggling hostile is a 100% indicator that a fight is coming! (though Nihm was ready for it!)
The one click hostile might include those in the area who are not associated with the potential PvP that could happen. If everyone is hostiled then a ranged auto attack could hit an innocent bystander character in the knee or something... there goes his adventuring career!
Maybe the PvP toggle can hostile the selected AND anyone who is in both parties of the opposing characters. Essentially, one player clicks hostile and the opposing two parties are hostile to each other, hidden or not. And if anyone is outside of those parties and then enters after the hostiling, they are just included... maybe... somehow... I'm not even sure if this is possible.
Either way, communicate, screenshot and pray everyone plays nicely together.
