Background:

Gaven hails from the Temple District of the Port City called Raven's Bluff, also known as the Living City. His Mother, Irieonna Arkalis a Paladin of Helm and his Father, Leoneiros Arkalis a Cleric of Helm, attempted to raise him towards the Faith of Helm. But once of age he became unruly and rebelled often, the boy giving constant insistence of having nothing to do with the Order. Eventually after multiple issues with others of the Order they both decided and with the help of a few contacts known to them forced him into the City Watch, at the age of sixteen, in an effort to shape him up.

Unfortunately for them that did not deter the young lad from his ways. Though he went through the Watch's regiment daily after curfew he and a few other boys would go out and partake of the seedier sort of the city. The lad got into everything from booze to women, gambling to dirty jobs, and even turning a blind eye to a crime when paid. He was as black as they came as he moved up in the guard ranks, by the age of twenty three something caused the man to wake up inside, something that he has yet to speak of to anyone. Who know's if he ever will.

From the next day on he made a promise to himself to never touch the drink again and to follow a better path, whatever that was. Though this was no easy task, the drink beckoned and at times he would falter only to awake to the blinding sun as he laid back against one of the training posts. A piercing call of his name causing him to wince as he popped up at attention the man gave order and he complied making no fuss as he cursed himself out in his own mind.

Days became months, months into years, and he barely made a dent in putting away the criminal aspects of the City. It was frustrating and he became sick with it all. If he wasn't trying to stop a pickpocket, thief or anything else then he would just be watching the area and the sky turn from morning to night leaving him with a sense of boredom. He was making no headway in one aspect or the other.

One eve, and by this time he was twenty-five, the man was barreled into by a shorter, thinner man in finer clothing that he would find in the Merchant hold or somewhere more upstanding than the docks.

Gaven gave pardon as the man looked him over and poked him a few times with his cane as if assessing a specimen. He gave the smaller man an odd look as he went about his way, the two exchanged words and Gaven did not hesitate to take the job to become Crew for the Asturias, as far as he was concerned he was tired of getting letters from his Mother and Father begging him to find a wife, none of the prospects they had in mind suited him one bit and there was no headway in the guard. At least with this he would see different places and have a sense of solitary.

Five years had passed since the day he left Raven's Bluff, the Asturias carried along the sea heading for the Dragon Coast. He had yet been to this part and had been informed they would be in port for a few weeks, the Merchant informing him specifically there was a Helmite temple not far where he could send letter back to his family in a village called Nashkel. He clapped the man on the back grinning before his head snapped up as one of the Crew called out the sight of black flags, with better inspection they saw the flag had a white skeleton holding a cutlass with a foot standing on a sea of Crowns. It was the ship Dead's Fortune owned by Captain Sylmae "The Marked" Naeleth.

He grimaced and started giving orders to the men as he manned the single ballista the ship had. The calm before the storm broke as the other ship attacked first, ballista bolts flying through the area as the ships circled each other. Each ship got their own strikes on each other before Gaven glanced up seeing a bolt coming for him. The large man dove out of the way as best he could manage as the bolt struck the ballista sending shards of wood in every direction, some of the shrapnel hit Gaven as he tried to avoid it. Blood streamed down from the wound as he bit down trying to see through the pain. The other ship had come close during the chaos and they began to board.

The fight waged but the Asturias crew was out matched soon enough and those who were not dead were tied up. They were given an option, join up or walk the plank, those who were newer faces joined up with the Dead's Fortune crew. A few others decided to jump until Gaven and the Merchant were left. The crew picked him up bringing him before the Elven female the same question asked. Gaven waited and when he had a moment slammed his body into the man on the right as he tried to break free only to be bashed on the back of his head, darkness enveloping him.

His eyes opened and he found himself drifting along the cold water of the open sea, the pain in his head no where near subsiding and he blacked out again. Who knows how much time passed before he washed ashore. His eyes opened again hearing the sound of horse and wheels, he saw a blurred face and mumbled something before passing out again. When he finally awoke he came to in a Temple of Helm soon finding out he was in Naskel..

..and from there his next journey begins.
