Swordmage

Swordmages are powerful arcane spellcasters who blend martial combat with magic, often but not always elemental in nature. Ancient traditions of swordmages are common throughout Abeir and parts of Toril, such as Netheril or Evermeet, and are particularly common amongst eladrin, genasi, or githyanki.[1] Wielding swords enchanted with spells, swordmages are powerful foes to cross, hardened through years of training in the melding of spell and blade.

Requirements:

Feats: Skill Focus: Spellcraft, Dodge, Weapon Focus (Short sword, Rapier, Longsword, Scimitar)
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Race: Any
Alignment: Any
Deity: Any
Spellcasting: Able to cast arcane spells of 1st level (Wizard or Sorc only).
Skills: Concentration 4, Spellcraft 4, Tumble 2

Class Features:

- Hit Die: d6
- Base Attack Bonus: High.
- High Saves: Fortitude, Will.
- Weapon Proficiencies: Martial
- Armor Proficiencies: Light Armor
- Skill Points: 2 + Int modifier.
- Class Skills: Concentration, Spellcraft, Lore: Arcana, Lore: History, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Tumble, heal.

Special :

Class Abilities:

Level 1: Swordbond, Spellcasting Progression (6/10)
Level 2: Swordmage Warding
Level 3:
Level 4: Bonus Feat (Fighter list)
Level 5: Improved Swordmage Warding
Level 6:
Level 7: Imbue Sword
Level 8: Greater Swordmage Warding
Level 9:
Level 10: Aegis of Defence

- Spellcasting: At every odd level and 10th level you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known) as if you had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. If you had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Swordmage, you must decide which class gains the increased casting ability.

- Swordbond: A Swordmage gains the Epic Prowess feat (+1ab).

- Swordmage Warding: A Swordmage gains a dodge bonus to Armor Class equal, which increases as they progress (+1, Improved +2, Greater +3)

- Bonus Feat: At 4th level, the Swordmage chooses a fighter bonus feat.

- Imbue Sword: A Swordmage can imbue his sword with any hostile spell he memorized, only one spell at a time can be imbued within the weapon. It is cast at the target on a successful melee attack.

- Aegis of Defence: A Swordmage of 10th level can ignore arcane spell failure from light armor, however, all other sources of arcane spell failure still apply.

Swordmage is from 4e, but I really like the description and abilities, so tried to represent the class as best I could within 3.5e.

Note 1: Swordmage is supposed to use INT for its attacks, but that seemed a bit OP. You can take Combat Insight in epics though to represent this a little bit.

Note 2: All the above mechanics/feats already exist in BG, it would take very little dev time to make this, just putting the 2DA's together.

Aegis of Defence: A Swordmage of 10th level ignores arcane spell failure chances when wearing light armor.
The way that is worded makes me think they get free "Automatic: Still Spell" feats when wearing light armor.

Perhaps the following might be more appropriate:
Aegis of Defence: A Swordmage of 10th level can ignore arcane spell failure from light armor, however, all other sources of arcane spell failure still apply.

Imagine it more like Warrior of Darkness/Anointed Knight, the two things are basically identical.

Just a random thought of the day... about the following:
BigJ wrote:Note 1: Swordmage is supposed to use INT for its attacks, but that seemed a bit OP. You can take Combat Insight in epics though to represent this a little bit.
How about that, you would get AB bonus from intelligence, but with the limitation that you can only get twice your strength modifier. You know, to get +10 AB from +10 Int modifier you would be required to have at least +5 Str modifier.
Mind Guides Body: A swordmage's experience with blade and spell alike allows him to use his intelligence modifier instead of strength as a source of attack bonus, however, the attack bonus gained this way cannot be higher than twice his strength modifier. No matter how smart you are, wits alone cannot aid much if you lack the brawl.
A sorcerer gish can always go for EDM for that damage. This could allow wizards to have similar alternative. And naturally Mind Guides Body would not work with Weapon Finesse or intuitive Strike.

Could be worth to drop some of the other features of Swordmage.

Edit: Wits over Brawl? Would that be a better name for this ability?

@ comments 1 - Thanks for that, I've updated the description.

Seems one is needed that doesn't force RP upon the player. It was agreed in other threads there's room to improve arcane gishes, they'll still be well behind divine gishes.

However RP is forced as all the top builds that I've seen listed have to:

a) Be evil and have a bone arm.
b) RP being a Dragonslayer (although how many actually RP this?)

Al least with the Swordmage (best combined with EK) the PLAYER can CHOOSE their background, race, alignment and future direction. They have the FREEDOM to make those choices and are not pushed into certain RP avenues. Its all for the PLAYER to create.

@ Comments 2 - Its a nice idea, but I would like to keep things simple for easy implentation. Everything proposed above already exists IG, and doesn't open up any balance discussions.

So I am seeing w10/ek10/sm10 or better still a w5/pm5/ek10/sm10

That would be a bab around 30, ac 23 before feats gear or spells, cl 28 with ps, kind of feat starved for optimal gish setup. Really goid balanced saves.

Could replace pm for sd. High Dex would not be a bane and get hips and evasion for ew but would lose 2 cl

Seems ok but I would shoot for full progression like spellsword got.

I kind of do, usually when I need to log out I pretend that my character hears a dragon roar in the wind and just rushes onwards to the distance. Additionally, he has a reason to explore different areas just in hopes of encountering a dragon. But then again, my Dragonslayer is not a caster... so it is basically the only PRC the character has.
aaron22 wrote:So I am seeing w10/ek10/sm10 or better still a w5/pm5/ek10/sm10

Wizard 10 - BAB of 5, Eldricht Knight - BAB of 10, Swordlmage 10 - BAB of 10, total: BAB of 25.

Wizard 5 - BAB of 2, Pale Master 5 - BAB of 2, Eldricht Knight - BAB of 10, Swordmage 10 - BAB of 10, total: BAB of 24.

But it kind of does, because I suppose that a Wizard 5/Eldritch Knight 10/Bladesinger 10/Swordmage 5 would become something to consider. Caster level of 27 with BAB of 27, and you would get stacking dodge AC from Bladesinger and Swordmage alike...

Thus... I think this PRC might have better chance to pass if it offered something little different. Hence the 'Wits over Brawl' class ability, which could also cut down the number of attacks by half just like the Northlander Hewing feat does. It could have that instead of the extra AC for example.

I really don't think the server needs to encourage even more gish builds. It already accounts for like 60%+ of the characters in game.
