I would say there are two types of plots - DM plots and player plotlines. Read the server rules carefully and you will pretty much know what type of player plotlines you should avoid (basically anything godmodding guards, or use of NPCs). If ever in doubt, ask the DM team.

DMs do the major story plots that involve multiple players and NPCs, which can be exciting at times. Some people really love DM events, others less so. You rarely (read: never) get the one on one interaction but you can still take away elements from an event and have that affect your character, and then you always have something to RP about with other players. A lot of people enjoy the puzzles a DM event-chain can be.

I like player driven stories, which can just be as simple as helping another character realize their potential, come to terms with something in their backstory, or achieve a goal. I'm also quite fond of inner character conflicts and exploring that type of RP.

RP on the server is really what you make of it. Often you need to just put your feet forward and address other characters so they will respond to yours. You might maybe be in a timezone where you don't see many other characters, or are just unlucky. The biggest mistakes I think some players do is that they place their characters in the background, and do an emote every so often. You've then just made your character an NPC my character has no reason to interact with. That quickly becomes boring, especially for yourself. I also recommend to not make a shy character, it will be very difficult to get RP and involved in things if your character's first response is to remove themselves from any and all social situations.

Approach every character as a plot interest, and you will likely be rewarded.

Intrigue RP is another type of RP some players are fond of. Secretive and discreet.

I liked the suggestion early in the Other Thread of giving the quest-givers a different-coloured name as well, so it's immediately obvious who they are.

I'm ashamed to admit I attempted to respond to one of the Docks' Drunken Citizen NPCs when he random-emoted near my new character on my first or second day

I still respond to npc's from time to time. Think it's funny to do and you never know. You might give a DM or hidden player who happens to be in the area a good laugh.
