Harper Agent

Unread post by The Last Question »

In an attempt of improving this class, I've based the following suggestion on the three Harper PrCs from the books: agent, mage and priest. They (mage and priest, that is) were taken from Magic of Faerun (p. 29-31) and tweaked a bit.

Anyway, here it is:

Harper Agent

The semi-secret organization known as the Harpers has members scattered all across the region. These individuals are dedicated to battling evil, discovering and preserving forgotten lore, and maintaining the balance between nature and civilization. Harper agents are the "field agents" of the Harper organization, acting directly to gather intelligence and eliminate threats to the greater good. Bards are the most common candidates for the Harper agent prestige class, but they are by no means the only qualified characters. Rangers, rogues, sorcerers, and wizards all possess the diversity of skill and ability necessary to become Harper agents. Barbarians, fighters, and paladins rarely become Harper agents because they lack the subtlety for the work.

A character can achieve a maximum of 5 levels in the Harper agent prestige class.

Requirements:

Feats: Alertness, Iron Will
Alignment: Any non-evil
Class: One level in a spellcasting class
Skills: Diplomacy 8 ranks, Lore: Local 4 ranks, Survival 2 ranks

Class Features:

- Hit Die: d6
- Base Attack Bonus: Medium
- High Saves: Will.
- Weapon Proficiencies: Simple
- Armor Proficiencies: Light.
- Skill Points: 6 + Int modifier.
- Class Skills: Appraise, Bluff, Craft Alchemy, Craft Armor, Craft Trap, Craft Weapon, Diplomacy, Hide, Listen, all lore skills, Move Silently, Perform, Sleight of Hand, Survival, Taunt and Tumble.

Class Abilities:

Level 1: Harper Knowledge, Spellcasting Progression
Level 2: Liira's Heart
Level 3: Selûne's Radiance
Level 4: Extend Spell
Level 5: Mystra's Boon

- Spellcasting: Starting at second level and each level after that, the Harper agent progresses in a selected spellcasting class. When the player first chooses this prestige class, if they have multiple spellcasting classes, they choose which one they advance in.

- Harper Knowledge: Like a bard, a Harper agent has a knack for picking up odds and ends of knowledge. This ability works exactly like the bardic knowledge ability of the bard class. If a Harper agent has bard levels, the character's Harper agent levels and bard levels stack for bardic knowledge.

- Liira's Heart: At 2nd level, the Harper agent becomes immune to fear (magical or otherwise).

- Selûne's Radiance: At 3rd level, the Harper agent gains low-light vision, becoming able to see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination.

- Extend Spell: In their studies of history and lore, Harper agents have learned something of ancient magic, including rudimentary elements of the elven mythal magic. These discoveries allow them to power some of their spells each day, granting them spells that last longer.
At 4th level, the Harper agent gains the Extend Spell feat.

- Mystra's Boon: At 5th level, the Harper agent gains a +4 bonus on all saves.

I like it... except the +4 to all saves. With the right classes....

Harper is a decent class, that I would definitely consider, but the boons are mechanically garbage and the required feats ... same.

I think this is a great start.
If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

You have a good point! Perhaps +4 was a bit too much. Maybe a smaller bonus, +3, +2? That's something to think about.

Perhaps a progression? +1 at HA level 1, +2 at HA level 3 and +3 at HA level 5?

Another option would be +2 at HA3 and +3 at HA5. SInce you would be required to take at least 3 anyway so giving the +1 is really just to give them a little boost earlier.

I like the idea of a progressive Mystra's Boon. That definitely fixes the issue for me!

On a different topic, how does the whole PrC updating/implementing process work? Not that I'm assuming this is going to be implemented, I'm just curious.

The stock Harper Agent PRC abilities wrote:Deneir's Eye
  • At 2nd level, the Harper agent gains a +3 sacred bonus to saving throws against traps. This is a supernatural ability.
Lliira's Heart
  • At 2nd level, the Harper agent gains a +2 sacred bonus to saving throws against mind-affecting spells. This is a supernatural ability.
Tymora's Smile
  • At 3rd level, once per day, the Harper agent receives a +2 sacred bonus on all saving throws for 5 turns. This is a supernatural ability.
Lurue's Voice
  • At 4th level, the Harper agent may use this ability to cast Dominate Animal as per the spell, three times a day.
Mystra's Boon
  • At 5th level, the Harper agent gains a +2 sacred bonus on all saves against spells.
How about letting Harper Agent's choose their boons on level up? Because with this suggestion Harper Agents would no longer have Deneir's Eyes, Tymora's Smile, or Lurue's Voice. The stock abilities are bit dodgy, so perhaps those could be revamped to offer something else...

Deneir's Eyes for example could offer that save bonus against traps and perhaps offer Skill Focus (Spot) for free.

Tymora's Smile might just offer Luck of Heroes.

Lurue's Voice perhaps could allow you to summon Phantom Bear from druidic spell list three times per day.

That way, you might be able to pick boons from deities that better match your character.

- Elminster, probably.

Idea is to make kits corresponding to the various Harper PRCs that exist in pnp, requirements will be the same (and will likely remain alertness + iron will) for everyone but benefits will vary.
