Anyone Roleplaying via Discord, Teamspeak or Skype

I voice-RP both on Conan Exiles(Rip) and in my P&P games on Twitch. It's pretty cool and immersive.

+1 it is not 1999 anymore. RP via text should have died with NWN 1 and the MUD.

Tabletop PnP which birthed NWN was "via voice". And Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, etc. have carried the torch nicely.

However, in the case of NWN2 because it was born in that same bygone era it would be quite jarring if a group of people were standing around communicating telepathically while I heard nothing. If it was a server wide requirement I could get with it, but otherwise no.

But in a general sense text is "anti-RP" by and large in the same way email is dry and sterile compared to a face to face conversation. It conveys little emotion without the use of modifiers, etc.

Lots of people will disagree with you.

First off, not everyone speak english well. They'd be at a disadvantage to native speakers. Then there is also the people who are more eloquent in written english than in spoken. Not to mention those who have "stage fright" and are uncomfortable with talking with others.

Secondly, the written roleplay is often more detailed as you have that extra second or two to think about how to write a response or a reaction.

Lots of people have. I'm coming at this from a Pen & Paper POV where voice is "default" so I'm quite use to seeing males RP female chars, etc. But the language issue is a big deal for sure since this isn't a group of people who are native english speakers around a table.

There is something to be said I suppose for immersion / suspension of disbelief when you don't "hear" the speaker, as your imagination fills in the blanks. There is advantages to both I'd say but I'm preferable to voice just because that is where I came from in my RP and its much quicker if everyone involved is comfortable with tabletop PnP style interaction.

Again, doesn't work at all in NWN so its sort of a non-discussion as it relates to this particular format.

Only ever did classic DnD tabletop twice in my life. My background is pbem and pbf, play by email and play by forum. Taught me to widen my vocabulary, something tabletop never would have as you don't have time to think about what you want to say.

I'd honestly be surprised, an odd idea for me to RP via voice really. The writing actually helps with immersion I'd think.

I've role-played for years using voice chat and I don't think it non-immersive at all. Just the opposite, you don't have to type and can move while continuing the conversation. Like normal life.

Good points and I understand that people that come up to me can't hear us roleplaying but I think in dungeons areas or the wilderness it is MUCH easier to do combat that way.

Yeah, I totally want to hear guys pretending to be elven women. Or women pretending to be dwarven men. Or bad actors trying to act.

Voice would absolutely ruin the game for me. Honestly, you guys have had good experiences with voice rp? I believe you if you say you have, I just have a terribly hard time picturing it.

Sure that is non-immersive but not if you have a Girl playing a female character and obviously when us guy play a male character (Which I'm sure the majority of men play, I know I ONLY play male characters, PnP bias coming through

Ok so yea.. dude playing chics so would not be very emersive for me to voice that. Also how am I supposed to speak that elvish? It's all il's v's and ae's. Would I need a video client to do drow sign?

Being a HUGE of Tolkien i learned some Sylvan and High Elvish and its not really hard to pronounce and obviously with another elf. Just saying.

Also, concerning the Drow hand language, that would of course have to be done via whisper or PM in voice? Just a thought.

On the one hand, PNP is "voice RP" and that's the most classic form of D&D there is. Using the technology however, I prefer to type. I save my enormous voice-acting talents for my daughter's bedtimes these days.

That is kind of my point and desire, which I think the community from the start missed. It would work great for a small party with a DM (Which is the scenario I am imagining and hoping for)

Hey folks!

I'd just like to add in here, please don't do this. The DM team doesn't support it as legitimate RP, nor is it inclusive of those around you. We can't exactly enforce it, but we appeal to you to be sensible about this.

Any play outside of the game or the forums, is not supported as legitimate RP by the DM Team. Using discord or other forums as a way to enhance or supplement your own stories is fine, but it won't be counted in an official manner.

NWN2 is a written medium, not a Voice medium, unlike how folks commonly play MMO's.

Having had very negative experiences with this issue myself when I was a new player, I feel quite strongly about it, and urge everyone who wants to do it to consider the experience of others around you (who are not in your immediate group) as well.
