General Notice About Exploits

Unread post by Endelyon »

Recently it's come to my attention that many of you have been abusing an exploit to return to the Nexus without DM assistance or before a server reset. This bug is as old as the hills and quite well-known--you aren't doing anything clever or new, but I've decided that many of you may not be aware that this is in fact an exploit and we have a pretty zero tolerance policy when it comes to those.

Just to remind everyone of our rule about exploits:
– Exploits
– No using known or unknown exploits, custom hak files, or third party programs. Absolutely no exceptions. Chances are if it seems like an exploit, it probably is. This is limited to circumvention of conventional game mechanics or intentional use of bugs only, and does not extend to things that normally occur in the game's mechanics (power attacking with a Rapier as a small race, using a Spear on a duelist, taking One Shot twice as a ranger, etc are fair game. Things will be appropriately patched by developers if and when the issues appear to be problematic).
DMs know how this is done and are watching you do it. Some of your fellow players also know how it's done and are watching you do it. Literally everyone on the game server can see you doing it when it happens if they know what to look for. And after this post I assume that every time one of you does this I'm going to hear about it from one of those players or DMs. :)

Moving forward, if I find out about a player doing this you're getting a 2-week vacation from the game, no questions asked. Second offense is going to be 2 months, and if I have to deal with it a third time you can just consider your ban permanent pending appeals.

I'm not kidding about this. I don't care whether you agree that it's a ban-worthy offense or if you were just doing it so you didn't have to bother a DM or because none was online or you want to RCR reaaaaaaaally badly and couldn't wait for reset. NO EXCUSES. Just don't do it.

I should probably have clarified that it's well-known by NWN2 developers and game admins. Not knowing about the exploit from a player perspective is definitely a good thing, and you shouldn't feel an ounce of shame in that ignorance.

On the RP Sigil PW server the staff there tells you to use it to reach the OOC area, likely because it saves DMs tech time. Unlike here though, it is a central hub system where every map is a few transitions away and there isn't a concern of using it to travel quickly across areas. Might do well to spell it out in the rules since players who are accustomed to using it on that PW may well not consider it an exploit.

Just to elaborate, this is a free vacation to the luxurious Puerto Backyarda where you can get Couch Surfing lessons while staying at the Bed du Room.

Hey Endelyon, you might want to ask the DM's to make an occasional OOC shout in game about this. Not everyone visits the forums and some players may be doing this exploit without knowing it is against the rules since they just play in game.

Probably not a bad idea. Considering the tone of my first post and the revelation that Sigil actually promotes this as a legitimate mechanic I should probably clarify that I'm not planning to ban anyone from BGTSCC who isn't aware that this is against the rules and is legitimately ignorant of the fact that it's viewed as an exploit here. I don't want to be seen as heartless or draconian.

Once you've been warned, though, no excuses! :P

Seriously hard to be seeing you as anything but cute and chirpy with that forum avatar...

Hmm.. How about a signpost that spells out this rule for the next update? Is is possible to put a signpost in that area? If not, how about one in the Nexus itself?

Hey, I don't know any, either! *high-five!*

... which actually has me a little worried. I'm not one to take short-cuts in general, but I'd rather not get slapped with the ban-hammer because I'm just blissfully ignorant, as opposed to willfully ignorant. :-|

I've been noticing some odd activity on the server in the last month, and I believe I know how the exploit in question is being used(one player in particular comes to mind, who I noticed was abusing it on a daily basis). Suffice to say, this exploit isn't really one that you can blunder across while being logged in and playing, so you should be safe.

I'll freely admit ignorance in the realm of exploits. And that's both a great and terrible thing.

Great because I have no idea how to use the exploit.

Bad because I have no idea if what I'm doing is an exploit, save the blatently obvious ones.

I'd definitly be game for a sign in the Nexus about recent changes and such myself, as I don't use the forums too much.

on the flipside, it could jsut as easiliy be done that when you login to the game after an update, the transfer NPCs have a verification requirement when you choose your location.

"Where do you want to go?"
"Take me to <Location>, please."
"Before I transport you, be aware that we have made an update to the server and/or rules. Before you are given transport, you must acknowledge that you are aware of the recent changes."

Option 1: Exit the conversation
Option 2: I am not aware of the changes, and I will go check on them now.
Option 3: I have read the changes, and I acknowledge that I have done so by choosing to accept the transport.

After the third option is chosen, a flag is put in that doesn't offer this option type untill the next update.

Just a thought though.
"Now see, that's good information there. For a second, I thought you'd just met a chicken god."
