A couple of questions/need advice

Unread post by ryacual »

Hello I am a new player here and I can't figure out what i want to roleplay. There are so many options and variety between the classes I've made several characters just to quit and make a new one just to check it out. I was thinking of making a barbarian or frenzied berserker but I read the max bonus modifier is +12. Does this include bonus from equipped items or just from rage or temporary spells and potions? I was hoping to have a super strong character like a half-orc with lots of strength so when i rage/berserk I would get great BAB. Using supreme power attack and just be cleaving hordes of enemies. Is this an unrealistic approach. I enjoy playing a male warrior that usually dons heavier armor and a halberd.

And does a characters BAB apply to the roll for a critical threat? If it is then what exactly is it rolled against? I haven't played this game much since SOZ came out and this looks like the best option for multiplayer. I appreciate any replies, thank you and sorry if this is in the wrong thread.

Hi there and welcome to the server! Barbarian is a quite strong class and we do have at least a few players that play Orcs so you should be able to find a home. FB5 is fine to add to Barbarian, but Frenzy and Rage don't really mesh well so you probably won't use Frenzy much. It is highly recommended that you take at least 20 levels of Barbarian as the changes on this server give them lots of goodies. You can read up on Barbarian and other class changes, new classes, new feats, etc. here:

viewforum.php?f=7

This said, +12 is the HARD CAP to any ability score and most things don't stack. So if your barbarian has 30 STR you can hit 42 when raging with epic rage. However, it is recommended you get at least 21 CON as you can then get Epic DR (All that damage goes to waste if you don't have survivability).

Critical threat is basically just a second roll when you score a natural 20 (or 19, 18, or whatever the critical threat range is). If you score a hit on your second roll it is a critical. So your full AB of the attack still applies.

Go full orc. Go full evil. I can show you around. We are getting a new orc class soon. I can roll up a new toon to run around with you or I can be your mentor on my higher orc and be a quest giver. Heck . I ca.n be both if you don't mind having to work around the toon switching. If you as new player playing orc, you will want friends. Welcome to the server. Have fun

thanks for the responses but now I have more questions that I am unclear of. on a dex build with a gnome or halfling wielding a rapier in two hands would i be able to use power attack and benefit from weapon finesse? If so would the character benefit from insightful strike?

are you referring to chaotic evil or just any evil? I did make an evil human that i can roll again as an orc. Its just I'm unsure how to roleplay an evil character when i'm new. Does completing quests change your alignment if you are helping them find or destroy something?

Technically a Short Sword is not supposed to be a finesse weapon for gnome/halfling, but it is, so yes specifically with a Short Sword you can use Weapon Finesse, get 2.5x INT through Insightful Strike and Combat Insight if you've nothing in your offhand and use Power Attack. A Rapier, being a medium weapon will not work the same way. Technically this is a bug, but I don't think there is anything in the rules specifically against such builds.

An evil orc would not complete your standard bg quests. You would never go into bg as an evil orc. That is where I come in. Obviously I would never tell you what alignment to play or your rp backstory. That will play out in character.

I put this out there so that I can help out. A new orc is in trouble from birth. But if I can get a scent of a new orc, I can help out a lot. And it is completely IC for me to grab up any stray that lingers around.

I Wil tell you from the get. Orc is hard. It is sometimes lonely. And it is almost always exciting. You will have few friends and a lot of enemies. Your builds are always one feat short. But if you like a challange. want to climb the hard mountain. Want to row against the current. Then roll an orc. What we orc look for is the tiny wave. The tiny moment in the spotlight. We don't speak of current events at a campfire over tea or wine. We orc don't compare the seamstress that designed or newest ensemble. We meet and speak of battle. The last one. The next one. It is not all about PvP either. Going further than PvP is the goals. But PvP is in your future as an orc. There is no way that you will not find that. And no way you shouldn't. Even if you are not the aggressor. You need to be mature about your character. Things will go bad for you. But if you can separate pc from player then you will enjoy yourself. I honestly don't want to sell you something that you will not enjoy. The server survives by its players. An unhappy player is a soon gone player. So I as a player that enjoys the server and want to see it prosper I just wanted to give you fair warning.

Orcs are allowed to put up the AFK tag to quest for XP.

In my honest opinion that is pretty bad form to throw up the afk and do that. To each their own, but something I personally would never do. Embrace the orc. Embrace the struggle.

Wow... Once you approach epic levels the pain of the grind would become insane...quests are the only way to hit 30 in under a year unless you have the kind of free time to grind areas for hours and hours a day... If a new player is not worried about the mechanical aspect of leveling more power to them, but it's a bit unfair to look down on someone for wanting to be able to level their first PC at a somewhat reasonable pace.

I do not look down on it. There are a couple reasons I don't do that. One I hate quest grind and two I like to stay in the character. Every player should find their fun and do it. I would want nothing else.
